🌎 Northern Outer Banks, NC: Sea turtles are having a banner year with 56 nests, the most since counting began in 2009. Hatchlings are already making their tiny‑tire‑track dash to the ocean.

📰 Volunteers Help Track Sea Turtle Hatching Success

🌎 Outer Banks, NC: Protecting sea turtles continues after hatchlings reach the ocean. Trained volunteers with N.E.S.T. return to nests about 72 hours after the last hatchling emerges to carefully excavate and study the nest.

🐢🥚 During excavations, volunteers count eggs, eggshells, unhatched eggs, and any remaining hatchlings. This data helps conservationists measure hatching and emergence success and estimate how many hatchlings successfully left the nest.

🔍 The effort can also document rare genetic conditions and verify nest relocation outcomes. Any live hatchlings found are safely released to continue their journey to the sea.

🤝 The information collected helps scientists monitor nesting success and strengthen sea turtle conservation efforts along North Carolina’s coast.

📰 North Carolina’s Smallest Turtle, Saved by Dogs

🌎 NC: Conservation groups are using specially trained detection dogs to locate threatened bog turtles, North America’s smallest turtle, and even find their hard-to-spot nests. The dogs can uncover turtles far more efficiently than traditional survey methods.

🐢 Bog turtles face threats from habitat loss, illegal collection for the pet trade, and damage to mountain wetlands. The species relies on rare high-elevation bog habitats that also support many other plants and animals.

🐕 A three-year pilot program led by The Nature Conservancy, the Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy, and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is helping researchers track turtles, monitor nesting sites, and improve conservation efforts.

TURTLE TUESDAY

Wow. It has been so hot here that Eastern Box Turtles have been bathing in my shallow upper pond for hours. I have found two doing this.

This is normal behavior but not often seen. It's a reminder of the importance of making water available for wildlife.

🐢🐢 TURTLE TUESDAY 🐢🐢

🌏 Tiny Raine Island is the largest nesting site for 90% of endangered Green Sea Turtles. Unfortunately, rising sea levels are creating slopes that cause hatchlings to flip over and die. Climate change's heat is causing too many females to be born.

💪 But an intrepid group of egg relocation specialists, armed with high tech and knowledge from Indigenous groups nearby, is saving the day. They have relocated eggs at scale to a safer island.

🌊 This year, more than 9,100 northern Great Barrier Reef green sea turtle hatchlings have begun their journey to the sea. An amazing 82% of the relocated eggs hatched and made it to the water.

✅ This is another example of a conservation effort that is successful because it uses Indigenous knowledge to be ecological and sustainable.

☀️ In the southern Sahara, where degraded, baked, crusted soil prevented any seedlings to establish, ecological restorationists dispatched 500 "ecosystem engineers."

More commonly known as African spurred tortoises, the ecotechnicians went to work digging burrows to avoid the desert heat and cold.

🌧️ Water stayed in the soil. Plants grew. Insects and microorganisms moved in, followed by birds and small mammals.

🛰️ From space the region even looks alive.
