Wardlaw Hill Fort: A small oval shaped hillfort #HillfortsWednesday which occupies the highest summit of the Dundonald range - the higher peak of the double peaked Wardlaw Hill in South Ayrshire. It is located 145m above sea level, has an approx NE-SW alignment and it measures about 70m x 60m. Asdal Voldsted: Asdal hillfort also known as Odin’s Farm (!) was a strategically important defence point, #HillfortsWednesday so likely to have been fortified for just as long as Vendsyssel has been inhabited. #Carrig Hillfort for #Celtic #HillfortsWednesday: „The early #Irish laws tell us quite a lot about what we might expect to find inside a #ringfort. There was a main family house and an outhouse; there were animal pens and hencoops and sometimes beehives; a dunghill was in the centre and there would have been a variety of arm equipment, such as a plough, spades, billhooks, threshing sticks etc. Many ringforts also had a souterrain, a type of undergorund cellar which could gave been used for storing food or as a refuge from attack. The main entrance into the ringfort was often paved and was swept regularly.“

Back on the #WyeValleyWalk for Easter Saturday. An incredibly beautiful walk between Boughrood and Builth Wells/Llanfair-ym-Muallt.

Barely saw anyone in 6 hours. Managed to fit in some prehistoric detours en-route: a fine standing stone, two Bronze Age round barrows, a Bronze Age cairn, two hilllforts and a joy of a very obscure stone circle with magic views of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons.

A walk along the Glamorgan coast south of Llantwit Major between two Iron Age promontory forts today.

Cloudy and very muddy in places, but great to get out and breathe the sea air.

A bit early for #HillfortsWednesday, but a year ago today I had a visit to Woodbury Hillfort above Great Witley in Worcestershire, as part of a walk around the Abberley Hills.

Much later than its Iron Age heyday, the fort was occupied by Owain Glyndwr in 1405, during his war with Henry IV.

Here's Foel Faner, a stone-ramparted #hillfort above #Dolgellau in North Wales. Terrific views of the mountains (#YRhinogydd, #CadairIdris, #Dyfi Hills, #Arannau) from a commanding position. The rampart is well-preserved.
