  2. “I knew almost nothing about the #Jewish aspect, as opposed to the #Southern aspect, of my family’s history,” #Lemann, a staff #writer at the #NewYorker and #professor and dean emeritus at #Columbia #Journalism School, #writes in Returning: A Search for Home Across Three Centuries. Jewish was more the way others thought of the family than how they viewed themselves. Or so he thought.

Lemann’s #book is his fifth and his most personal, reaching back in time to uncover how his aristocratic, well-established life in #Louisiana was a relatively modern development following decades of #assimilation.

It is a family portrait in a unique milieu — #Faulkner and #RobertPennWarren meets #IrvingHowe’s World of Our Fathers — that follows the rough contours of the #Torah: the original sins of slavery, #Exodus and the conflicted push towards a promised land with political #Zionism and a codification of life as Lemann reclaims tradition. It’s a compelling read..."

  7. "In his #novel #AFoolsKabbalah, #SteveStern #writes in a manic whirl of disturbing and hilarious images as he follows the great historian of #Jewish #mysticism #GershomScholem on his journey to gather up the remains of a vanished civilization."

"Steve #Stern’s new novel, A Fool’s #Kabbalah, is a #comedy about #tragedy and a tragedy about comedy. It is a #mystical #fable of real events and a realistic account of mysticism. There are Jewish #jokes and Jewish jokesters and #Nazis who torture and kill the jokesters. #Kafka, Kabbalah, #Zionism, and the #shtetl of #Zyldzce (pronounced, perhaps, as “zilch”); #WalterBenjamin, #HannahArendt, love for a #rabbi’s beautiful daughter, and an #occult midnight marriage to an unearthly albino girl in a white gauze dress; shit jokes, fart jokes, raw misery, deep #philosophy, brutal #history and brutal #fantasy, broken hearts and heartfelt joy—these exuberantly disparate topics are somehow, improbably, made to cohere."

  15. #WritersCoffeeClub 19. What is the difference between a writer and a person who writes?

The same as the difference between 'breather' and 'one who breathes,' or 'dancer' and 'one who dances.'

I'm comic-relief untalented when it comes to dancing, but I can have fun doing it anyway.

Anyone who #writes is a writer. Some people do a lot more of it than others, and some people are better at it than others, but I don't see the point of gatekeeping.

  16. @bamboombibbitybop @maulanahirzan yeah, the only think Im aware of w.r.t. the "health" of solid state storage is how many wornout cells are being marked or some indication of TB written / MFG TBW. And its temperature, but in most cases they have a heatsink - AND they self throttle performance wise if they're hot. etc.

Since utils like Crystal Disk info only report SMART things like writes and mfgrs total writes (before failure), Im assuming that's what OP's util is showing: 1-#writes/tbw

  17. I have finally set aside more time for reading and have got back in to reading Quality of Light
    by Richard #Wagamese

I really love how Richard #writes. He so effectively evokes the emotion he is building for that moment.

I am just a hundred and some #pages in, and it is a wonderful read so far.
