Google is training millions of people to scan random QR codes on websites to "prove they're human." 🚨
You know who loves that behavior? Phishers. Every scammer on the planet just got a gift from Google's new reCAPTCHA.
We break it all down in Ep 26.

The exhaustion of thinking out loud, why engagement matters
The pattern we need to compost - You write something rooted in years of experience and practical work, you try to make it accessible. Someone responds immediately with an objection that shows they haven’t read let alone followed the argument yet. Or they react to the tone, the hashtag, or one phrase instead of engaging with the substance. Sometimes the response is sincere but rushed, sometimes it’s performative, often it’s shaped by the habits we’ve absorbed from #dotcons culture, […]https://hamishcampbell.com/the-exhaustion-of-thinking-out-loud-and-why-engagement-matters/

We just rebuilt vir.group from the ground up. This is not a minor update. This is a fundamental rewrite of the product DNA.
https://vir.group
What changed:ActivityPub integration is now fully native. Your posts reach the entire fediverse. Hundreds of millions of users across Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads, and dozens of other compatible platforms. No duplicate content. No managing multiple accounts. Post once. Reach the world.
Matrix protocol with E2EE encryption is now the default. Even we cannot read your messages. Session keys are yours alone. Recovery key gives you full control. Encrypted reactions, replies, edits, deletions. Works on mobile and web simultaneously.
Audio and video calls are built directly into the app. WebRTC with our own TURN relay in Europe. HD video. Noise suppression. CallKit on iOS. Push notifications on locked screen. No external links. No "let's switch to Zoom."
Projects hub is now a full marketplace. Publish your project with description, media, links, tags, and investor pitch. Categories for technology, art, education, manufacturing, services. Global reach via ActivityPub. Premium placement with 48-hour moderation. SEO optimization with short links and canonical URLs. Click analytics. Direct encrypted chat with interested parties.
Full feed control. Filter by words, topics, languages, domains. Mute, block, hide. Choose global, local, followed, trending, or your own custom lists. No algorithmic recommendations. You decide what you see.
Web version now matches mobile. Three columns. Composer. Side navigation. Same E2EE. Same calls coming soon. Responsive design that works on ultra-wide monitors without stretching one column across the screen.
This is not a social network. Not a messenger. Not a project marketplace. It is all three. Built for builders, creators, investors, and analysts.
Register in one minute. Publish your first project today.

Old CAPTCHAs asked: "Can you think?" New reCAPTCHA asks: "Are you compliant?"
Google shifted the question from proving you're human to proving you're their customer. That's not security. That's a loyalty test.
Ep 26 breaks it down 👇

Can you prove you're human without proving you're a Google customer? 🤔
Google's latest reCAPTCHA update says "No." It now requires Google Play Services, effectively banning privacy-focused users from the internet.
In Episode 26, we break down the "Tollbooth" and show you how to reclaim your access.

🚨 BREAKING: Google just changed the rules of the web.
Their new reCAPTCHA now REQUIRES Google Play Services to prove you're human. If you run GrapheneOS, LineageOS, or any de-Googled Android, you are being locked out of the internet.
Is privacy now incompatible with web access? We break it down.

Turning stress, conflict, and exhaustion into commons culture instead of mutual destruction
"To put some "commons" structure into this kindness… A path before we knee-jerk criticise members of the community we should make real offers to help repeatedly (x3) in a positive community way. Only then let the "negative" monster of judgment lose to clean up the mess. Focus on clean up first, the "common senses" desire to attack second. What do you think about growing our positive norms (common sense)." This is the hard bit of any grassroots movement of turning stress, conflict, and […] -

People ask why the articles are hard to follow without background, it's a fair point, but a distraction as these are not stand-alone hot takes, they are all a part of a long flowing story about how we got into this mess and how we might get out of it. So, focus, please share this and the other posts if we’re going to recover focus and direction on the #openweb path. What happened over the last ten years on the Fediverse wasn’t random. A fluff view of current tech we need to compost

It is a breath of fresh air to see a wave of diverse individuals and organizations joining the decentralization party. The energy is shifting, and the sense of community ownership is becoming undeniable. It's no longer just a technical experiment - it's where the conversation is heading. 🌐

Treating everything as personal conflict is a dead end
Let’s focus on being honest, the most exhausting and destructive habit in activist and alternative tech spaces is the blinded reflex to turn disagreement into personal conflict. Someone challenges an idea, and it becomes an attack, names a pattern of behaviour, and suddenly it’s a vendetta. Someone points at structural problems and gets accused of targeting individuals. This is #stupidindividualism in its purest form, and it’s #nothingnew. It’s not only about difficult personalities […] -

People resist visible structure
Freedoms are not given, they are taken.-- Peter Kropotkin This post comes from real life experience with #Oxfordboaters, but I am going to address it as a tech problem as it is the same mess we need to work on composting in our social tech projects. People don’t actually hate structure, what they tend to resist is visible structure - the kind we need to make visible so we can see, question, and challenge. At the same time, they’re always perfectly comfortable inside invisible structures […]https://hamishcampbell.com/people-resist-is-visible-structure/

The #encryptionist detour
Let’s look back to before the #Fediverse, to be honest about the last two decades of #openweb failure, for a long time we got pulled off the path. Not only by enemies, but by a mix of fear, fashion, and half-understood technical “solutions” that felt right to fearful people at the time. The rise of the dogmatic, blinded #encryptionist mindset came out of real conditions of mass surveillance revelations (Snowden era), common sense #neoliberal distrust of states and corporations and the […] -
It is incredibly frustrating how much local concert information gets locked inside the Instagram. To help fix this, I’ve added an open, accessible `/events` section to my site to track, archive, and share live music happening around #İzmir.
All data is fetched from @musicbrainz. The goal is to make upcoming gigs discoverable for the community and preserve the history of past shows, making sure to fully credit everyone involved.
You don’t need an account to see it, and it includes venue maps, photo galleries, and subscribe-able Webcal, Atom, and JSON feeds.
I’ll drop some example entries in the replies to show off the gallery feature!

The Meta-Mess of the “Open” Social Web
Signal, Noise, and the missing ground - We have a signal-to-noise problem, that if we’re serious about “paths to growth,” we need to be honest about the paths and people pushing us down paths we’re actually walking. The problem was never just the #dotcons platforms. It’s what we build instead - and more importantly, how and why we build it. Right now, too much of the #openweb conversation is caught in narrative loops of reframing stagnation as growth, critique as progress and […]https://hamishcampbell.com/the-meta-mess-of-the-open-social-web/

The proposal was created by @tg, maker of the popular Current RSS reader.
