  1. Composting the mess of digital security in activism – We need to talk about this, offline

The online tools we "common sense" rely on for organising and campaigning are genuinely dangerous, and I find that paralysing. This isn't paranoia, it's a practical reality that urgently needs addressing. Until we do, offline working groups are one of the few reliable ways to unblock the mess. Where we actually are now... Disappearing, encrypted chat outside the #dotcons is one of the few spaces that feels even marginally safe. But even then, safety depends entirely on who's in the room, […]

  7. Actually solving things, and why this matters for #OMN

Activism has a reputation problem, in default #mainstreaming storytelling it’s painted as chaos, absence, or naive idealism. But if you look at what activists at best actually do, a different picture emerges: a long tradition of people working out, in practice, how to solve real problems together without relying on distant authority. And that’s the bit most people quietly skip. In most social/political movements, the hard questions - how we organise, decide, share resources, resolve […]

  15. CW: pics of cops on my train

On my way to school this afternoon, there were some kinda #cops in #uniform. One was blocking my normal seat, which was folded up. It was raining, y'all, and I had my #whiteCane in its holster. i don't go up steps to sit because, in addition to being #blind, I have an arthritic knee.

Anyway, #transit has #signs all over everywhere reminding us that if we see something, we should *say* something.

So, I texted the transit cops that there were uniformed people who were #blocking the folded up seats for #disabled and I was afraid to ask them to move and put it down. I told them which train number. They thanked me.

I was able to sneak a pic because always hold my phone close read it.

Fat cop in the pic moved around a lot, so I saw his arm patch. I don't speak patch, but there wer three stripes above and three below the middle symbol, and I remembered #RobinWilliams in "Good Morning Vietnam" saying that three up, three down meant the end of the inning.

Skinny cop showed me his back, and it said "Sheriff" in all caps, but not till I was leaving.

  16. A Note on “Security” for the #FOSS Crew

We need to have a clearer, more grounded conversation about “security” and what it actually means in the context of the #openweb. There is a long history of thinking in #FOSS spaces that security is something we can solve purely technically: better encryption, better protocols, better architectures. But in everyday life and practice, people need to work from a much simpler starting point - We do not trust client–server security. We only meaningfully trust what can be verified through […]

  17. Disciplined curiosity beats IQ, Oxford

There is a persistent myth pushed in our culture that intelligence - high IQ, academic credentials, elitist education - leads naturally to clear thinking. My organic experience suggests the opposite, what matters is disciplined, skeptical, freethinking curiosity. Without that, intelligence simply becomes a tool for defending whatever assumptions people already hold. This is one of the reasons many academic environments produce people who are, bluntly, credulous. Not because they lack […]

  23. Most people sense that something is off

Meany people see the world degrading, enclosure accelerating. They see climate, politics, media all bending toward extraction. And even when they can see the trajectory, they feel powerless, so they cope by optimise their careers. They scroll. They argue. They consume. They retreat into irony. From birth, we’re trained into one core assumption: There Is No Alternative (#TINA). Not because it’s true, but because every dominant institution reinforces it: Schools train compliance. Media […]

  24. Yes, its messy stepping out of the churn

Everywhere we look - what we see, touch, and use - we are living inside systems shaped by decades of economic and technological assumptions. This isn’t only something happening “out there”. It has been normalised and internalised over the last forty years. The dominance of #stupidindividualism, combined with rigid economic dogma, influenced how we design technology, how we organise communities, and how we imagine progress itself. The outcomes are now starkly visible: #climatechaos, […]

  25. The greybeards and the second sell-out of the #openweb

There is a familiar voice resurfacing in today’s debates about the future of the web, its measured, reflective, earnest, often grey-bearded., and it has funding. These are the people who were there in the Web 2.0 era. The #Flickr builders. The early platform designers. The conference speakers who once talked about “community”, “social objects”, and “public infrastructure”. Many of them now occupy foundations, NGOs, advisory boards, and policy circles. And they are doing […]

  26. It’s how humans have always lived – together

For 200 years, capitalism, for the last 40 years #neoliberalism, taught us that we’re isolated individuals who compete to survive. But any real view of our actual history - and our biology - say the opposite: we’re interdependent, social, and ecological beings. For almost all species time before the current mess, we thrived through commons-based systems, shared forests, grazing lands, rivers, and community knowledge. Villages maintained open wells, fishermen shared tidal calendars, and […]

  27. Mess and more mess, “diversity”

We need to look at our paths and current the controversy in "diversity" in our #deathcult worship, to see the need to compost more of the current mess. The problem with “pushing diversity” isn’t diversity itself, that’s fine - essential, even - the problem is in the ideology shaping the push. Much of it comes from #mainstreaming progressive liberalism, which operates inside the logic of the deathcult. It reduces diversity to a checklist, a branding exercise, a way to appear […]

  28. As site blocks pile up, European Commission issues subtle slapdown to Italy’s Piracy Shield

As numerous Walled Culture posts attest, site blocking is in the vanguard of the actions by copyright companies against sites engaged in the unauthorised sharing of material. Over the past few months, this approach has become even more pervasive, and even more intrusive. For example, in France, the Internet infrastructure company Cloudflare was forced to geoblock more than 400 sports […]

  32. EU prepares to give new rights to live streaming sites, to the detriment of the Internet and its users

At the heart of Walled Culture the book (free digital versions available) lies the dispiriting saga of how the EU Copyright Directive came into being. It began in early 2013 with the usual “stakeholder dialogue”, in which the European Commission sought the views of the various constituencies affected. It generated an unprecedentedly large response that was surprising given the dry and […]

  38. The #techshit #churning and #fashernista problem we have suffered from the last 15 years. Composting is a good use for #hashtags, but the is strong #blocking on this use.

The mess we have made with #postmodernism and #neoliberalisam of the last 40 years needs a path out of.

We can all agree it's a mess, can we agree to pick up shovels to compost this mess
