There’s an idea on the “fluffy” left that we must be nice to bring people into social change. There’s an idea on the “spiky” left that we need to be sharp and confront power directly to be effective.
Both contain truth. The balance is what matters. The clear failure is spending too much energy on the left fighting itself over this balance instead of focusing outward.

On #Mastodon, blocks are private by design. The spec actually discourages broadcasting block activity between servers at all. The tradeoff: better privacy, but no ecosystem of block-analysis tools can exist.
Neither is wrong — they reflect fundamentally different philosophies about whether your social graph is public infrastructure or personal data.

The historical reference comes from the Irish potato famine - reminder of what happens when a mindset becomes #mainstreaming and millions of people are treated as expendable.
#Geekproblem = a critique of a strand of 20th-century modernism when technical thinking becomes dogmatic. The problem is not “geeks” or technology itself - there is a good side to modernism. The problem is losing the social nuance and turning everything into a technical problem.
#stupidindividualism = thinking about the balance between self and society. It is an outcome of the #deathcult and a symptom of the #geekproblem - the idea that everything can be reduced to isolated individuals instead of relationships and communities.

Been working with #mainstreaming people. The experience has been eye-opening, and not in a good way.
A lot of them are unaware of how badly they behave. Gatekeeping, careerism, status games, endless #blocking of anything outside their comfort zone. Then they wonder why change never happens.
This is a mess we really shouldn't keep putting up with.
Any ideas on productive ways to challenge this without simply feeding the cycle?
