Lack of proprioception is a bitch when you're trying to exercise / "work out."
This is definitely a lifelong problem that "makes sense" once I started to realize I'm autistic… I'm an epic klutz. Door frames, table corners, things-at-knee-height, etc, are constantly MOVING and RUNNING INTO ME. 🙃 My parents can often be heard saying, "It's a good thing we didn't name you Grace!" (they love me, really) When I was performing in musicals, in spite of HOURS of rehearsal with CHOREOGRAPHED moves (so I just had to "learn" it, in theory, right?) I never really was good at the dancing part of it. (Opening night of Funny Girl — yes, I was Fanny Brice — after "Don't Rain On My Parade" closes Act 1, the choreographer pulled me aside backstage and hissed, "that wasn't my choreography!!" and I had a minor meltdown in my leading man's arms, bless him.) It's hard to explain — it's like I dissociate even MORE from my body when I'm trying to perform specific "moves." My vision goes tunnel, if not completely black. It's like I'm trying to focus so hard on moving my body the right way that I pull completely into myself.
So… for the gazillionth time, I'm trying to start and stick to a little exercise / workout regime. Vanity notwithstanding (that's another convo), 1) now that I'm sitting at a desk 40 hrs a week, I'm feeling old and achy 2) I don't want to be one of those 80-yr-olds who is doubled over and can't even lift their head because their bones and muscles are so weak / deteriorated. And the time to start preventing that is now.
But trying to follow along with the diagrams, I go into immediate brain-gears-grind-to-a-halt irritation when multiple limbs are involved, or even worse, opposing limbs doing opposing things. Like, my left leg is doing what while my right arm is doing what, what now? Videos are even worse because it's like… ok now I have to mentally mirror-flip the whole thing in my head. Can you do one facing AWAY from the camera so I can actually just literally follow along?! (No… I don't struggle with telling my left from my right… (I don't 'struggle' with wearing socks)… I just always have to mentally check which hand I write with. Every. Single. Time.)
Anyway. This has been a rant.
(Now, otoh, being a pianist, my HANDS are fine. I can pat my head and rub my stomach at the same time, I can do the switching-pointing-fingers while reciting-the-alphabet-alternating-with-numbers whole choir warmup thing. But my whole body?! Forget it.)

What's on my mind?
Disappointment and Disillusionment!
- Invested 7 yrs in #GoPiGo3 #robot
- Created #ROS2 nodes for #proprioception, #odometry, #LIDAR, #docking, #tts #mapping, #navigation, #simulation, #ObjectRecognition, and #LifeLogging
- My robot cannot safely and reliably navigate in my complex home environment.
- No slower turns, no inflation value can fixI'm done, destroyed, no strength left for "one more try". GoPi5Go-Dave is on the shelf with other "reached its limit" robots.

Allow #myself to #introduction #myself.
I am a #basic neuroscientist and Associate Professor at the University of Washington, where my lab studies how the brain senses and moves the body (#proprioception #motorcontrol).
I will mainly be tooting about the #research and accomplishments of the scientists in my lab, new and old #neuroscience papers that incite me, and efforts to improve the rigor and equity of science. I may slip in the occasional #snowfly pic.
I hope to use #ScienceMastodon for discovering new scientific #manna and for unexpected interactions with #Scientists and #PseudoScientists alike.

Wtf how did I roll so ridiculously bad in proprioception? Constantly walking into things, smashing extremities on everything, knocking things over more than a cat with zoomies...

I absolutely struggle with touch screen keyboards. Whether a 6" screen or a 12" screen, doesn't matter. It's probably related to my top-tier klutziness since childhood. I can't ride a bike, can't put my pants on without leaning against a wall, etc. It's bad. I'd never pass a field sobriety test.
This is why one may see me bust out a Bluetooth mechanical keyboard from time to time for my tablet.
It's also why my posts and comments on here are often lacking punctuation or capitalization 😆

I don't understand what I'm feeling. Depression? Exhaustion? Heartbreak? Maybe even fear? Dissatisfaction? Something just isn't quite right. I'm not sure what to do about it because I don't know what it is. It's so subtle I can hardly hear it but it's constantly there. Been going on for days, I think even weeks.

My #proprioception is shot to shit because I'm tired after preparing all day for a job interview that wasn't of any actual fucking use so of course I tripped on a step & took a stripe off my big toe while I was on the way to get a beer to cheer myself up. #grumpy

I'm thinking about #proprioception today & how it might relate to my intense dislike of dancing.
I understand that others like dancing & think I can understand why (although it's a very abstract understanding). I even have a version of it in my head where I enjoy the rhythm of it but the moment there's an attempt to translate that from thought to physical act my brain goes from "this is fun" to "I absolutely hate this, make it stop".
Does anyone else have this?

@DrTCombs the #SpatialEducation of #children requires activity and interaction with the natural and #BuiltEnvironment.
#Proprioception develops through the use of the body as vessel, tool and means to inhabit space via sensory input and increasingly appropriate response to stimuli.
So, that is a fairly concerning institutional approach.
-
Shorter version in my own words:
#Interoception = if you're hungry, tired, have to go to the bathroom—what you feel in the inside#Proprioception = what makes you graceful and well balanced or clumsy
-
"• #Interoception involves sensory perceptions from inside your body, such as changes in temperature, tension, or pain. These sensations give you feedback about whether you are hungry, thirsty, unwell, or sleepy. Interoception also helps you recognize when you are feeling emotions.
• #Proprioception refers to the ability to sense your body in space as related to gravity.…"
