Day 8 marks the 5th appearance of this whisky in an advent calendar for me: Glenfiddich's Gran Reserva 21 year old single malt at 40% ABV. Tastes just as I remember: fruitcake in a glass with an oaken finish.

Yet Another Busy Night (a wake, the FrizzLit Moby Dick Book Club, other projects), so this is just the dram framed up on top of last night's project, a map from Edgar Rice Burroughs I'm redrawing to use as endpapers for bookbinding.

Day 5 is the Caol Ila Distillers Edition 2022, a no age statement Islay single malt finished in Moscatel barrels and bottled at 43%ABV.

Peat, sea air, and dried fruit on the nose; sweetness and more dried fruit (apricot) on the palate yielding to peat smoke, salt, and pepper; the smoke sticks around into the finish, with some toffee.

While at Julio's Liquors today for a Macallan Master Class and the Whiskey Roadshow, I picked up a couple of bottles that I'd been waiting on, the WhistlePig The Boss Hog XII and Westland Garryana 10th Edition, which is (coincidentally? Probably not) also their first 10 year old.

I cracked The Boss Hog XII tonight and it's not bad, but I was hoping for more of a cacao hit - I really didn't pick up on it. But it is certainly better than the hideous XI from last year. No one I've poured that for had liked it. It's awful.

Picked these up from Julio's Liquors this week.

The Wyoming Whiskey 50th Anniversary Julio's Liquors bespoke 120.6 proof seven year old single barrel straight bourbon whiskey.

And the St. George Spirits NOLA Coffee Liqueur. I got to try this as a bonus after a recent Whiskey Wednesday, thanks to the rep having a bottle in their car and being willing to let us try it. In liked it so much I put in a special order for one, as did two others. I believe they got a case in, so there were three more available last I knew.

This is cold brewed Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee, French chicory root, Madagascar vanilla, and organic cane sugar. Very simple, very tasty. Just this over ice would be a good sipper.

In What If s02e03, there's a whiskey called "Vulgarian 16", which I believe is a direct reference to Lagavulin 16, a popular Scotch single malt whiskey.

The bottles and stickers are almost same, and even "Vulgarian 16" is an almost anagram of "Lagavulin 16".

I'm pretty positive this is intended.

If you are in Edinburgh on the last Sunday of a month - I recommend the whisky-tasting session in the Ensign Ewart on the Lawnmarket just down from the castle. Great value at 25UK - six drams to taste - plus a welcome dram.

Slightly different to a blind tasting in that you are given a sheet with the distillery regions, ages, cask types and abvs, but they're all jumbled up. I managed a respectable 18 out of a possible 30.

All the whiskies are from IBs and the order of preference for me was: the Geerie 11 from Adlephi (just outstanding), Dalmunach 2015 Festive Bottlings from Cask Hound, Cadenhead's Whisky Shop blend (25 yo amazing value), Dram Mor Glenrothes 10, The Bimber and lastly the Thompson Bros. Caol Ila - only because I am not a fan of peated whisky. Interestingly, nearly everyone correctly identified the Bimber.

All cask strength #scotch #whisky tonight. Some really excellent offerings and some pretty good ones too. Thank god for auto correct. Typing is hard. Anyway, this was one of my faves. #Lagavulin 12 year 2022 release. Tobacco, leather, vanilla on the nose. Spicy vanilla and peat on the palate. Very nice.

If you like a peaty whisky, Lagavulin 16 is quite smooth. Expensive, but if this is your jam, probably worth it.

Peaty whisky isn’t really my thing. But it might be growing on me.
