My love of Single Grain Scotch is no secret. I very much enjoy them, but a lot of people don't look beyond Single Malt.

This haul included a couple of Clan Denny bottlings - a 29 year Carsebridge and a 47 year Cambus.

I also picked up a couple of Cadenhead's bottlings - an 18 year Invergordon and a 34 year Girvan.

A lot of people sleep on Single Grain Scotch, which is a real shame, IMHO. I got into grain via Compass Box Hedonism, which is a blended grain, but that opened me up to trying others. Many years ago I was in the right place at the right time, when Julio's Liquors happened to get a couple of bottles of a Clan Denny 50 year old North British Single Grain.

The price was shockingly low, half what 25 year old single malts were going for, so I snapped one up on the spot. It was fantastic, and when I later got into auctions I started hunting other Clan Denny bottles, and have since branches out into other independent bottlers.

I'm still picking up Clan Denny though, and this time I added a 30 year Garnheath 1975, a 40 year Girvan 1965, a 35 year Cambus 1975, and a 44 year Invergordon 1966.

I also picked up a few Cadenhead's bottlings - a 31 year Cameronbridge, a 34 year Girvan, a 40 year North British, a 26 year North British, and a 40 year Carsebridge.

As odds and ends I picked up a bottle of Cameron Brig (which is Cameronbridge) - I've been warned this might not be so good, a Signatory 14 year North British 2009, a Signatory 29 year North British 1991, a Muirhall Bond 15 year North British, and a Murray McDavid 16 year Invergordon.

Jess made a Costco run recently and, while there, spotted this Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, Barrel Proof Rye. She knows I like rye, so she picked it up for me.

The Black Tot Historic Solera Rum I picked up at Julio's Liquors when I dropped in to pick up another order that had come in. Black Tot is one of the rum brands I've been into, and this is an expression I hadn't yet picked up, so I filled that gap. I still need to find the Master Blender's Reserve 2025. 😉

While at Julio's Liquors today for a Macallan Master Class and the Whiskey Roadshow, I picked up a couple of bottles that I'd been waiting on, the WhistlePig The Boss Hog XII and Westland Garryana 10th Edition, which is (coincidentally? Probably not) also their first 10 year old.

I cracked The Boss Hog XII tonight and it's not bad, but I was hoping for more of a cacao hit - I really didn't pick up on it. But it is certainly better than the hideous XI from last year. No one I've poured that for had liked it. It's awful.

I picked up a few bottles from Julio's Liquors recently. The Russell's Reserve Loch & Key Whisk(e)y Society "Buddha-ful" 9-year straight bourbon, celebrating Julio's 50th year. The WhistlePig Whiskey Snout-to-Tail 10-year bourbon. Ardbeg Eureka! Committee Release. Maker's Mark Loch & Key "Second Curtain", the last of that stave combination. And Black Tot Rum 2021 Master Blender's Reserve Rum. I was missing this one (I have 22-24) and was pleasantly surprised to find Julio's still had it.

There are some auction sites which won't ship to MA, so I have to have them sent to a very kind friend in CT who is willing to accept shipments on my behalf. He's been holding a few for me for a while, and we were able to meet up today at WhiskyMentors in Canterbury, CT.

All told I brought home 14 bottles from auctions, and one I picked up while I was there. I'll break it up into separate posts.

The last whisky in the lot is an eight year old German Single Grain from Finch. I'd originally picked this up intending to use it at a German-themed tasting we did in October, but shipping delays meant it didn't arrive in time.

It wasn't all whisky, either.

I picked up a bottle of Don Julio Tequila 1942 because I like it and it was a good deal I spotted while bidding on other lots.

And the rest is rum.

I picked up four bottles of Black Tot Rum - a Finest Caribbean and three of four extant Master Blender's Reserve releases - 2022, 2023, and 2024. The 2021 is still out there. I was inspired to pick these up after seeing The Rum Revival talk about them on YouTube.

And, last but not least, while I was at Whisky Mentors, aka Canterbury Liquors, I picked up a store pick Mad River Distillers Double Barrel Rum - QS01 Reminiscent.

Tobermory 2013 Port Cask Finish, Distillery Exclusive NC, NCF, 60.3% abv.

Five years in American Oak and another five in Port Casks.

Packed full of red berries. slight nutty notes. A real hit on the palate of warm cinnamon and ginger spice - nippy tingles on the lips and tongue. Creamy chocolate and spicy, woody finish with a hint of bitterness.

I got this on a sailing trip around the inner Hebrides earlier this year after spending a few days holed up in Tobermory waiting for poor weather to clear and decided on a trip to the distillery and then to a mobile cinema parked in the car-park to watch a film about an electric powered fishing boat.

After a very hectic but productive day yesterday, decided to go out for a drink or two, found a surprisingly tasty Belgian whisky, Braeckman 2023 single grain which seems to combine the tastes of bourbon, rye and a little smokiness and pairing it with a 14.5% stout made the taste sensation even better. #whisky #belgianwhisky #braeckman #ImperialStout

Today a shipment arrived from Scotch Whisky Auctions. A smaller one this time, with three The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottles - one Hampden Estate Rum and two Glenmorangie, two Compass Box - The Spaniard and a signed, but unfortunately smudged, early The Spice Tree, and, finally, a The Clan Denny 45 year old Single Grain from the Carsebridge Distillery.
