  1. The #DOJ requested documents from #Yale to determine whether its admissions practices were in compliance with federal #CivilRights #law, & determined that the medical school “continues to intentionally discriminate against applicants based on their race,” despite a 2023 #SCOTUS ruling rejecting race-conscious #AffirmativeAction in college admissions.

  4. Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor on DEI as both corny and crucial:

"It is easy to dismiss D.E.I. programs as ineffectual, because in many ways they have been. But that raises the question of why the right is so determined to undermine and dismiss them. ... The problem with D.E.I. is not that it went too far but that it has not gone far enough."

  5. The Trump administration has launched investigations into race-based admissions at Stanford, Ohio State, and UC San Diego medical schools, demanding documentation on applicant data, standardized test scores, and race considerations dating back to 2019. This move escalates the administration's racist campaign targeting selective universities accused of violating a 2023 Supreme Court ruling banning affirmative action. Critics argue this pressures institutions to eliminate diversity considerations, undermining access for underrepresented groups. Ohio State assures compliance, calling the investigation routine. 6. “White people were very badly treated, where they did extremely well & they were not invited to go into a university to college,” #Trump said, an apparent reference to #AffirmativeAction in college admissions. “So I would say in that way, I think it was unfair in certain cases.”

  7. Essay - How the climate conversation went punk

From #SlowFashion to #GuerrillaGardening, the internet has transformed solarpunk, a literary movement, into an alternative lifestyle trend.

Excerpt: "In 2020, #SolarPunkFarms cropped up in California as a #communal living space whose inhabitants grow and share their own food. The leftovers are sent to local markets. They have designed their #greenhouse after the animations of #HayaoMiyazaki. In fact, the works of the #StudioGhibli founder have found resonance among solarpunks, as he places nature as a character in his plots. In his visions, nature is at its most beautiful—lush greenery, rays of light, the dew on leaves, and the wind blowing life into trees.

"Though these changes are encouraging, it’s ironic that as we move past dystopian visions, the #capitalists of the world, running in the #AI race, threaten to steer us to the very future. The use of AI itself depletes water resources and generates immense amounts of greenhouse gases and electronic waste. If we are to live in a world where technology exists in harmony with #nature, #activists, stakeholders, and individuals must actively call for more #SustainableSolutions, #AffirmativeAction, and policy changes.

"If cyberpunk warned us of what happens when technology consumes humanity, solarpunk invites us to imagine what is possible when humanity reclaims technology. It reminds us that hope, like sunlight, is a renewable resource too."

#Trump to sign order requiring #universities disclose #admissions data on #race

Trump on Thurs is expected to sign an order requiring universities to hand over admissions data to prove that they are not engaged in #AffirmativeAction efforts, the White House propagandist Karoline Leavitt posted.

Leavitt did not give details on the order such as the ramifications universities will face if they do not cooperate.

  11. Our relationship was complex and at times fraught, but Dad was my first advisor on #career, #racism in #corporateamerica, and #leadership. He served in #HumanResource and #affirmativeaction (#DEI) leadership roles at #YMCA of the USA and United Church of Christ (#UCC) for most of my pre-adult life.

  12. @SchepBernard
Seriously? Chanting "Death to the #IDF!" at a concert was not a call for murder? 🤨

    Regardless, that's not the point.

"Death to the #IDF" is simply "Death to Israel" said in a way that gives antisemites cover.

#Racists like Donald T**** and his MAGAts couch their calls to "End #DEI, #BlackHistoryMonth, #Juneteenth, or #AffirmativeAction" as "promoting equality" ("If we are TRULY equal, showing favoritism to any group is 'racist'.")

A Klan mantra for years. Don't fall for it.

  13. @knittingknots2
We've LONG known that when #TheOrangeMenace or his #Cult accuses someone of something, it's a Confession.

Their argument against #DEI is that it is "#AffirmativeAction" that results in hiring/promoting "less qualified" people simply due to their #race/#gender.

And yet, the result has been to weed out QUALIFIED minorities so less qualified Frat-boys like #Kegstand not only are given jobs they AREN'T qualified for, but then protected when they are shown to be incompetent. 🤨

  15. #MichelleObama's "line overlapping #affirmativeaction & #GenerationalWealth wasn’t offering “affirmative action” as a pejorative term. It was, instead, contextualizing a different way in which people are boosted by circumstances that aren’t always under their control. It was a defense of affirmative action programs that noted how wealth built in an explicitly unfair economy was its own form of unearned advantage."

  16. Anybody else see the irony in a white male professor at Cornell Law (who studies CORPORATE LAW and FINANCIAL REGULATION) getting his knickers in a twist about the possibility for students of color to "game the system" by disclosing their racial background in college admission essays? 19. Lord Almighty. 😞

    #UncleThomas on #AffirmativeAction: calls the #Constitution "#Colorblind".

SERIOUSLY??? The Constitution that declared people like him to be "3/5ths of a man" and refused to outlaw #slavery was "colorblind"? Is he out of his knucking mind? 🤦‍♂️ #ThisWeek

  20. @QasimRashid
Arguably, 50+ years ago, #AffirmativeAction was a "quota system". It played a part in how #UncleThomas got into Yale and why he resents it so much.

But TODAY (or should I say *before* today), it was used merely as a "tie breaker" to account for what a minority student had to overcome just to reach that point.

It angers to to no end when people like Mike Pence cite #MLK's "content of their character" quote out of context to make it sound like THEY are the ones ending #racism. 🤬

  21. MSNBC explained last night WHY Justice #UncleThomas despises #AffirmativeAction and has opposed it ever since he was a Yale law student:

It was b/c he felt the white students believed the only reason he got in was b/c of #AF, and had difficulty getting a job afterwards b/c of the perception.

Problem is that IT WAS PROBABLY TRUE IN *HIS* CASE 50 years ago. It seems clear to me he WAS less qualified and probably got in only b/c of #AF.

But that is NOT the standard TODAY. msnbc.com/alex-wagner-tonight/

  22. Even if we all worked in synch, we can't make changes.

We can and always do help, but we clearly need more of the 85% to join. We can't do it all alone.

If collectively we're the majority, then why do our collective politics and policies not reflect that?

We didn't put ourselves here, and we're not keeping ourselves here.

  25. Nevermind the every day advantages white students have of good neighborhoods and good public schools.
