My patience with Safari on Mac just choosing not to render things randomly or having performance issues is decreasing by the day.
Problem is, as far as I know, it's the only browser that supports Apple Private Relay.
Yes I know theres VPNs, but thats different to the relatively simple and seamless offering of private relay. I want to use APR, because I am paying for it in my iCloud service.

It was hard to find the cause, because the symptoms were very weird. While Safari was in the stuck state only some sites were affected and it was possible to open a private browsing window and access the sites in that window without any issues. Any other browser (including Safari Technology Preview) would also communicate with the sites without problems.
Quitting Safari and re-opening it would fix the issue, but then it’d start happening again after a little while.

After years of having issues with Safari failing to connect to certain websites after they’d been open in a tab for a while (e.g. FastMail, which I keep pinned), I found the cause:
“Limit IP address tracking” in Wi-Fi network settings.
Having that on (the default) caused Safari to periodically stop communicating with certain servers. Watching in Web Inspector revealed that it wasn’t even attempting to establish a connection, it’d just be stuck.
Turning it off fixes the issues.

Но тестирование на реальном телефоне закончилось фиаско: через пару минут скролла чип раскалился до 42 °C, а интерфейс ушёл в троттлинг. Оказалось, что покадровый пересчёт кривых Безье в JS на мобильных экранах быстро превращает телефон в печку. В кейсе разбор того, как мы перешли на аппаратно декодируемые видео-спрайты, почему IntersectionObserver втихую крутил видео под непрозрачными модалками и как в итоге удалось сбить температуру обратно до стабильных 30 °C. WebKit/Safari released support for JPEG XL years ago, but now Firefox and Chrome are close to shipping it as well. They both use the newly completed jxl-rs Rust-based decoder that supports many format features (like progressive decoding) that Safari’s decoder does not.
Hopefully Safari’s decoder won’t now just sit unimproved for years. Progressive decoding and animated JPEG XLs will be very useful.

FYI, if you use #Firefox you can now enable #JPEGXL support to try it out (without having to fiddle around with any tricky settings):
Just go to Settings > Firefox Labs > and enable the “Media: JPEG XL” checkbox.
It’s good to see that it’s another step closer to being enabled by default!
#Safari / #WebKit has had support for about three years (but doesn’t yet implement progressive loading), and #Chrome has it behind a feature flag, but not much has happened recently. Getting there, slowly!
