this morning i was wondering why my blog doesn't prompt a ‘Show Reader' button in Safari.

ultimately i ruled out any page structure issues. and i noticed - if you access the URL directly, you see ‘Show Reader.' if you navigate from my blog index or homepage, you don't. UNLESS - you reload the page.

if you have @view-transition { navigation: auto; } in your CSS, Safari fails to display the option for Reader view.

Mine had 14,489 items going all the way back to 2017. Turns out, the first time you focus the address bar after launching Safari, it fires off a preview image download for *every single item in your reading list*. Yes, you read that right. Trillion-dollar corporation, ladies and gentlemen. Brightest minds, folding phones, golden awards to dictators, Just Works™ and all that…

Anyway, so my Safari fires off 12,429 requests to 3,775 hosts in roughly 3 seconds. The images aren’t cached (yep), so it happens again on every launch. And where does all the processing happen? Did you say “the main thread?” Congratulations! Hence the beachball.

So that’s Bug #1.

I’d basically stopped using Safari because of it until, finally, this morning (I’ve wasted a whole morning on this), I decided to bite the bullet and debug it. (Because I’m clearly an idiot that loves to do free work for trillion-dollar corporations.)

Anyway, the quick solution is to backup your bookmarks and delete your reading list.¹

Problem solved.

Or so you’d think.

Because if you do that, chances are you’re going to find in a few minutes that your reading list has synced back after you delete it. (Tril-, oh fuck it, you get the idea.)

Turns out, when you select Clear All from the reading list sidebar, it empties the bookmarks file without updating the iCloud sync state.

That’s Bug #2.

So to work around Bug #1, we need to work around Bug #2.

So maybe we select reading list items in batches and delete them? Not ideal, but workable, right? Nope… you can’t multiple select in the reading list sidebar.

Maybe if I ran Clear All from my iPhone? Nope, no Clear All on Safari on iPhone.

Well, I guess it’s clear what I need to do, then: press the delete key 14,489 times to delete all items from my reading list one at a time – simples! (Folks, watch out, AGI is right around the corner. These motherfuckers are not messing around.)

So, anyway, I wrote some AppleScript to delete them one by one. It’s still running. Will report back if it works and they don’t come back again.

But, hey, at least we have folding phones!

I still don't like that browser. He also doesn't work on several official and government websites.
