The Japanese term for (sushi) rice - shari, しゃり, シャリ, or rather 舎利 translates to 'bones of Buddha' (relics really) and likely goes back to when relics (a tooth?) of Buddha taken to Japan were likened to grains of rice.
舎利 shari is derived from Sanskrit शरीर (sharir) which is body - or the body/physical part left over after cremation.
舎利殿 Shari-den - is a relic hall, reliquary.
