Pain as a Doorway: Finding Agency in Chronic Illness
Pain may not be a choice. The way I meet the world often is.
The last few weeks have been marked by migraines and the familiar ache of endometriosis. Some days simply getting through work requires more effort than anyone around me realizes. The pain is real. The fatigue is real. And yet, I’ve noticed something that surprises people when they learn I’m not feeling well…
Most of the time, they had no idea.
Every difficult season offers countless doorways. Some lead toward bitterness. Some toward self-pity. Some toward deeper compassion—for ourselves and for everyone else carrying invisible burdens.
There is a common misconception that suffering somehow entitles us to spread our suffering, even when that isn’t our intention.
When we’re in pain—whether it’s physical, emotional, or both—we naturally want to be seen. We want someone to understand. We speak about our diagnoses, our symptoms, our losses, hoping to find compassion.
Most people respond with the best of intentions. They meet our story with one of their own.
“You have migraines? I get headaches too.”
“Your joints hurt? Mine have been bothering me for years.”
This is often how humans communicate empathy. We reach for a shared experience and say, “You’re not alone.”
There is comfort in that. Feeling understood matters.
But there is also a subtle danger.
Pain asks for our attention. It doesn’t have to become our personality.
If every conversation circles back to our pain, our identity can begin to orbit around it. We stop relating to ourselves as a whole person who happens to be suffering and begin relating to ourselves primarily as someone who is suffering. Without realizing it, pain becomes the lens through which we interpret our lives.
I’ve noticed this occasionally in online support groups. Their purpose is a beautiful one: to remind us that we are not alone. Many people find genuine comfort, practical advice, and lasting friendships there.
Yet sometimes these spaces become little more than an exchange of symptoms. Each person contributes another story of exhaustion, another setback, another reason to lose hope. Compassion slowly shifts into collective despair.
No one intends this. Everyone is simply trying to be understood.
But if we never share how we continue living despite the pain—how we found a moment of beauty, laughed with a friend, created something meaningful, or simply made it through another difficult day—we can unintentionally reinforce the belief that pain is all there is.
Over time, this can cultivate a victim mindset. Victimhood is not the same as being a victim. Terrible things happen. Chronic illness is real. Grief is real. Trauma is real. There are seasons when we genuinely need support and care.
A victim mindset, however, is something different. It is the gradual belief that our suffering has become the defining truth of who we are. Once that identity takes hold, it can become difficult to imagine ourselves outside of it. Hope diminishes. Depression often follows. Ironically, our experience of suffering may deepen even further.
Compassion should never invite us to remain stuck. Its highest expression isn’t simply saying, “I hurt too.” It is also saying, “I know this road is hard, and I’m walking it with you. Life is still possible here.”
Pain is a doorway. Like any doorway, it leads somewhere. We don’t always get to choose whether we arrive at it, but we do have some influence over whether we remain standing in the threshold, retreat into the room of despair, or continue walking toward compassion, resilience, and a wider view of life.
Perhaps the greatest gift we can offer one another isn’t shared misery, but shared courage.
This isn’t about pretending we’re fine or refusing help. Hiding our pain is simply another kind of performance.
Instead, it’s about remembering that even in the midst of suffering, we retain agency. There is a quiet dignity in choosing not to let pain become the whole story of who we are.
I can’t choose
• whether a migraine arrives.
• whether endometriosis flares.
• whether my body cooperates today.But I often can choose
• how I speak to my husband.
• whether I pause before reacting.
• whether I notice something beautiful on the walk to my car.
• whether I allow pain to become my entire identity.That’s not toxic positivity. It’s agency.
The robin outside my office doesn’t stop singing because my head hurts. The goldenrod still flowers. The evening light still catches the leaves in the same way it did yesterday. The world gently reminds me that while pain is part of my experience, it is not the whole of reality.
I still have migraines. I still have endometriosis and lupus. Tomorrow may be another difficult day.
None of that is within my control.
But every morning I am offered a quieter choice.
Not whether I will suffer, but who I will be while I suffer.
Will pain become the story I tell the world?
Or will it simply be one part of the story of a life still capable of kindness, wonder, creativity, and love?
Pain may not be a choice. The way I meet the world often is.
