@petpet The general problem with most recommendation systems is that usually none of the algorithm's many parameters are in any way exposed to the user or opened up for customization. Most existing recommenders could be very easily tuned for different preferences & use cases, but instead they're consciously designed as black boxes and purely optimized for the preferences (and benefits) of the companies/platforms hosting the content, with a lot of these decisions driven by ad-tech as main business model...

From working with various UX teams over the years, it also has become absolutely clear to me that the default design behavior/goal is about patronizing/funneling people, treating everyone like toddlers with the omnipresent presumption that "less is more" in any situation, i.e. the main legacy of Steve Jobs & Apple's design philosophy which has been so influential in that field... That design approach equates "simplicity" with a literal lack of available options and then celebrates it as innovation. It's sickening and dehumanizing!

In the almost 30 years of my career, I've never felt & witnessed the combined dynamics mentioned in [1] and those about sacrificing agency/control, described below, more directly than in my recent hybrid advisor/consulting/engineering role at a small US-based startup... Endless uphill battles against template-driven Silicon Valley approaches/preferences/biases, unqualified AI magic, combined with a general unappreciation of "divergent", but already successfully trialed & tested ideas about seizing a fairly unique product design opportunity (in terms of interaction & UX design concepts/aesthetics) which, whilst parametric, algorithm & visualization-based, would also strongly stand up for giving more agency and fine-tuned personalization control for intended users. Different, but similar battles about better accommodating the people/artists creating works (and actual business value) for that platform...
