Pain as a Doorway: Finding Agency in Chronic Illness
Pain may not be a choice. The way I meet the world often is.
The last few weeks have been marked by migraines and the familiar ache of endometriosis. Some days simply getting through work requires more effort than anyone around me realizes. The pain is real. The fatigue is real. And yet, I’ve noticed something that surprises people when they learn I’m not feeling well…
Most of the time, they had no idea.
Every difficult season offers countless doorways. Some lead toward bitterness. Some toward self-pity. Some toward deeper compassion—for ourselves and for everyone else carrying invisible burdens.
There is a common misconception that suffering somehow entitles us to spread our suffering, even when that isn’t our intention.
When we’re in pain—whether it’s physical, emotional, or both—we naturally want to be seen. We want someone to understand. We speak about our diagnoses, our symptoms, our losses, hoping to find compassion.
Most people respond with the best of intentions. They meet our story with one of their own.
“You have migraines? I get headaches too.”
“Your joints hurt? Mine have been bothering me for years.”
This is often how humans communicate empathy. We reach for a shared experience and say, “You’re not alone.”
There is comfort in that. Feeling understood matters.
But there is also a subtle danger.
Pain asks for our attention. It doesn’t have to become our personality.
If every conversation circles back to our pain, our identity can begin to orbit around it. We stop relating to ourselves as a whole person who happens to be suffering and begin relating to ourselves primarily as someone who is suffering. Without realizing it, pain becomes the lens through which we interpret our lives.
I’ve noticed this occasionally in online support groups. Their purpose is a beautiful one: to remind us that we are not alone. Many people find genuine comfort, practical advice, and lasting friendships there.
Yet sometimes these spaces become little more than an exchange of symptoms. Each person contributes another story of exhaustion, another setback, another reason to lose hope. Compassion slowly shifts into collective despair.
No one intends this. Everyone is simply trying to be understood.
But if we never share how we continue living despite the pain—how we found a moment of beauty, laughed with a friend, created something meaningful, or simply made it through another difficult day—we can unintentionally reinforce the belief that pain is all there is.
Over time, this can cultivate a victim mindset. Victimhood is not the same as being a victim. Terrible things happen. Chronic illness is real. Grief is real. Trauma is real. There are seasons when we genuinely need support and care.
A victim mindset, however, is something different. It is the gradual belief that our suffering has become the defining truth of who we are. Once that identity takes hold, it can become difficult to imagine ourselves outside of it. Hope diminishes. Depression often follows. Ironically, our experience of suffering may deepen even further.
Compassion should never invite us to remain stuck. Its highest expression isn’t simply saying, “I hurt too.” It is also saying, “I know this road is hard, and I’m walking it with you. Life is still possible here.”
Pain is a doorway. Like any doorway, it leads somewhere. We don’t always get to choose whether we arrive at it, but we do have some influence over whether we remain standing in the threshold, retreat into the room of despair, or continue walking toward compassion, resilience, and a wider view of life.
Perhaps the greatest gift we can offer one another isn’t shared misery, but shared courage.
This isn’t about pretending we’re fine or refusing help. Hiding our pain is simply another kind of performance.
Instead, it’s about remembering that even in the midst of suffering, we retain agency. There is a quiet dignity in choosing not to let pain become the whole story of who we are.
I can’t choose
• whether a migraine arrives.
• whether endometriosis flares.
• whether my body cooperates today.But I often can choose
• how I speak to my husband.
• whether I pause before reacting.
• whether I notice something beautiful on the walk to my car.
• whether I allow pain to become my entire identity.That’s not toxic positivity. It’s agency.
The robin outside my office doesn’t stop singing because my head hurts. The goldenrod still flowers. The evening light still catches the leaves in the same way it did yesterday. The world gently reminds me that while pain is part of my experience, it is not the whole of reality.
I still have migraines. I still have endometriosis and lupus. Tomorrow may be another difficult day.
None of that is within my control.
But every morning I am offered a quieter choice.
Not whether I will suffer, but who I will be while I suffer.
Will pain become the story I tell the world?
Or will it simply be one part of the story of a life still capable of kindness, wonder, creativity, and love?
Pain may not be a choice. The way I meet the world often is.

Odysseus en Polyfemos (Eleusis)Twee weken geleden, op 17 december, nodigde ik u uit om de inmiddels traditionele vragen rond de jaarwisseling te stellen. Ik ontving er vrij veel en zal nu mijn best doen ze te beantwoorden. Er waren betrekkelijk weinig vragen over het “klassieke” deel van de oude wereld, maar daarmee begin ik vandaag wel.
Wat vind je van de trailer van de verfilming van de Odyssee?
Historici hebben geen mening over kunst. Ik heb het n.a.v. de film Redbad al eens uitgelegd. We vragen filmmakers toch ook niet of ze een mening hebben over historische processen?
Fresco van een duiker (Paestum)Is de beroemde schildering van de duiker uit Paestum, gemaakt rond 475 v.Chr., Grieks, Etruskisch of Graeco-Etruskisch?
Je kunt zeggen dat een scheppend kunstenaar autonoom is en uit de diverse tradities neemt wat hij nodig heeft, maar dat roept de vraag op welke tradities dat zijn. En of we die tradities eigenlijk wel kennen, want we kennen uit de Griekse wereld weinig dat hier op lijkt. Ik legde de vraag voor aan Ruurd Halbertsma, die voor het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden een expositie maakte over Paestum. Hij schreef:
De Saalburg (even ten noorden van Frankfurt) is de moeder van alle limes-reconstructies.De bekende ‘Tombe van de duiker’ blijft een Fremdkörper in de archeologie van Zuid-Italië. Het is tot nog toe de enige gedecoreerde graftombe uit de Griekse periode van Poseidonia/Paestum die we kennen. De twee lange wanden tonen vier ligbedden (klinai), waarop zes symposiasten zijn neergevleid, bezig met muziek, zang en liefkozingen. Een van de korte zijden laat de aankomst (of vertrek?) van de twee andere gasten zien, op de andere korte zijde is een jongen bezig met het uitschenken van de wijn. Op het deksel van de tombe is een naakte jongen afgebeeld, die vanaf een soort duiktoren een duik neemt in het water. Over de interpretatie is al veel inkt gevloeid. Het meest plausibel lijkt mij dat hier de geneugten van de jeugd worden gevierd. De duik als symbool van de overgang van leven naar dood wordt in de literatuur ook vaak genoemd, maar wordt op geen enkele manier gesteund door bijvoorbeeld literaire parallellen met een dergelijke beeldspraak als inhoud.
De beste parallel voor de afbeelding is te vinden in de necropool van Tarquinia, in de Tombe van de Jacht en Visserij, ca. 520-510 v.Chr. Tussen al het jagen en vissen duikt een jongen vanaf een rotspunt de zee in, ook in de Etruskische wandschilderkunst een unicum. Nu hadden de Grieken uit Poseidonia wel contacten met de Etrusken, maar dat waren de Campaanse Etrusken, die aan de overkant van de rivier de Sele woonden. Hun hoofdstad, die onder het huidige Pontecagnano ligt, werd door de Romeinen in de Derde Samnitische Oorlog verwoest. Of het beeld/imago van de duiker in Poseidonia beïnvloed is door een kunstuiting helemaal ten noorden van de Tiber lijkt mij onwaarschijnlijk. Er werd door Grieken én door Etrusken voor het plezier gezwommen en gedoken, zoals jongetjes rondom de Middellandse Zee dat nog steeds doen, zoveel is zeker. En dat plezier zien we terug in de graven, naast de jacht, de muziek, de zang, de wijn en de seks. Kortom, laten we de ‘Tombe van de duiker’ maar gewoon Grieks blijven noemen!
Waren er overeenkomsten tussen Tamuda (in Marokko) als grensgebied en de limesstreek in Nederland?
Zoals zo vaak is het drievoudige antwoord: “ja” en “nee” en “we weten het niet”. Ja, want alle grensgebieden kennen dezelfde problematiek:
- je moet niet ten onrechte welwillende bezoekers buitensluiten
- je moet niet ten onrechte vijandelijke bezoekers toelaten.
Voor de Romeinse wereld geldt hierbij als bijzonderheid seizoenmigratie en nomadisme, thema’s die voor de Nederlandse limes wat onderschat en voor de Maghreb wat overschat lijken te zijn. Tot zo ver het “ja”.
Nee, want de limes langs de Rijn is langs een grote transportader door het vruchtbare vlakke land, terwijl in de Maghreb de vruchtbare gebieden in het voorland liggen, en er bergen zijn.
Tot slot “we weten het niet”. We weten niet of de Romeinen één visie hadden op strategie, die aan alle grenzen dezelfde was, of dat de rijksverdediging steeds werd aangepast aan de omstandigheden. Voor zover ik weet zijn er argumenten voor beide standpunten.
Codex Justinianus met Accursische glossen en in miniletters aanvullend commentaar (Limburgs Museum, Venlo)In de Oudheid waren er allerlei, meest ongeschreven rechtssystemen in ons land. Later zijn stedelijk, gewestelijk en nationaal recht ontstaan. Sinds wanneer is er sprake van nationale rechtssystemen en lijkt de ontwikkeling in ons land op die in bijvoorbeeld Duitsland?
Voor zover mij bekend bestonden in het Romeinse Rijk inderdaad vooral ongeschreven rechtssystemen met daarnaast een geschreven traditie, waarvan we niet weten in welke mate die ook het leven reguleerde van gewone Bataven of Nerviërs. Dat geschreven rechtsstelsel is gecodificeerd in Beiroet en later, ten tijde van Justinianus, nog een tweede keer in Constantinopel. Deze Byzantijnse codificatie is rond 1200 in West-Europa ingevoerd en zou, samen met de standaardglossen van Accorso di Bagnolo de standaard zijn voor voor de nationale rechtssystemen.
Let wel: rond 1200 waren er nog geen nationale staten.noot Ik vertik het om dat nieuwe anglicisme “natie-staat” te gebruiken. In de zestiende eeuw streefden de overheden naar eenheid (bijv. de Pragmatieke Sanctie van 1549), maar het verzet van de gewesten tegen deze centralisatiepolitiek was fel. Ik denk dat we in West-Europa pas kunnen spreken van nationale rechtssystemen vanaf pakweg 1800.
Nederland en België waren rond 1830 wel zo’n beetje klaar, maar Duitsland werd pas in 1870 een eenheid, en ik meen te weten dat er pas in 1900 één rechtsstelsel was. In elk geval kon je in het Duitse Rijk tot 1899 een vonnis vragen volgens Romeinse regels.

Allegorie op de wetenschap (Berliijn)Waarom bestuderen we de Oudheid? … Waarom heb jij voor de Oudheid gekozen?
Waarom ik dit vak heb gekozen? Stom toeval. Ik had het verkeerde vakkenpakket om nog tropenarts te worden, en toen ik eenmaal was verlost van de militaire dienst, was de inschrijving voor Maatschappijgeschiedenis in Rotterdam al gesloten. Die van Geschiedenis aan de Vrije Universiteit was nog open.
Waartoe dient de wetenschappelijke bestudering? Eén reden is dat dingen in de Oudheid zijn ontstaan die nog steeds het geval zijn, zoals het idee dat je niet én joods én christelijk kunt zijn, en maximaal één godsdienst kunt hebben: dat gaat terug op de implementatie van de Fiscus Judaicus door keizer Domitianus. Als je eenmaal weet dat iets onder specifieke omstandigheden is ontstaan, kun je je er ook van distantiëren. Het staat u vrij tegelijk moslim en katholiek te zijn, daar gaat Domitianus niet langer over. In die zin is oudheidkunde een bevrijdend, emancipatoir vak.
Veel van die “ontstaan-claims” zijn overigens niet sociaalwetenschappelijk en overtuigend te bewijzen. En bovendien is het ontstaan van iets minder belangrijk dan het hedendaagse functioneren. Dus dit is geen heel sterke rechtvaardiging van de bestudering van het tijdperk.
Een tweede, hiermee verwante rechtvaardiging is dat we zo nu en dan antieke ideeën kunnen reconstrueren en spiegelen met de onze. Wat een Aristoteles beweerde over vrouwen, zou in onze tijd ondenkbaar zijn, en roept de vraag op waarom wij zo anders denken.
En dan is er nog het aspect waarop Rens Bod zo vaak attendeert: de modellen waarmee geesteswetenschappers hun onderzoek doen, beschrijven de werkelijkheid niet alleen maar vormen die ook. Ze hebben zélf agency. Ik adviseer iedereen om De vergeten wetenschappen te lezen. Oudheidkundig voorbeeld: de reconstructie van de Indo-Europese taalfamilie schiep het nationalisme in een voor ons herkenbare vorm.
Tot zover de officiële redenen, waarmee de subsidiëring valt te rechtvaardigen. De voornaamste reden is echter een andere: het contact met het verleden is gewoon leuk. Net zoals het bijwonen van het North Sea Jazz festival, een vakantie in Limburg, een bezoek aan Museum Arnhem of het lezen van een roman, behoeft een liefde voor de Oudheid voor het niet-gesubsidieerde deel der mensheid geen rechtvaardiging.

Ik deel altijd petities als oudheidkundige instellingen worden bedreigd, wat zo elke twee à drie maanden gebeurt. Soms pakt het gelukkig goed uit: de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam heeft aardwetenschappen (met een belangrijk isotopenlaboratorium) niet beëindigd.
Deze blog, die u ook via het Whatsapp-kanaal kunt volgen, is niet mijn enige activiteit. In het voorjaar organiseer ik een reis naar Bulgarije en een andere reis langs Keltische locaties.
