Do piles of books count? Weekly Recap 7/20/2026
Do piles of books count as an asthetic?
What about the idea that every flat, horizontal surface has the potential to be an altar?
Selene and I ran out of bookshelf space years ago. We’ve bought more, but it’s a constant battle between finding space for deities and finding space for more books.
From where I’m sitting right now, I can see at least eight different altars. Some are on bookshelves, some are on the mantle or other pieces of furniture. We even grabbed some floating wall shelves at one point to try to make additional space.
The books, however, keep arranging themselves in little piles. That’s mostly my fault, of course, as I can’t seem to stop accumulating them.

Did you know that several movie theater chains offer significantly discounted pricing on Tuesdays? I don’t know why Tuesdays are special, but getting two tickets for less than $20 (hint: buy them in person like the old days to avoid “convenience” charges) is a welcome breath of fresh air—and pretty much the only way that it doesn’t feel ridiculously overpriced.
Reserving your seat online has it’s benefits, but there’s something to be said for showing up at the theater really early, choosing from what’s available at that moment, and then finding something to do (like dinner somewhere within walking distance) until the show starts.
Well, this past Tuesday, Selene and I took advantage of that and saw Supergirl. Here’s my review: It was lame. Did anyone else think she was slow and underpowered? I thought it had potential, but in general, it was poorly executed.
In brighter news, ritual incense is now back in stock. I revitalized my mix and was able to press a nice batch. You can grab more on Etsy. And if you didn’t see the link at the top of this post, I also uploaded a new book review you can go and watch.
Okay, after this, I think I’m done talking about sports for a while. But for now… well, it’s a significant part of this week’s journey.
On Wednesday afternoon, Argentina played against England. Selene was at work, but she had mentioned that she wanted some palo santo burning for them. As a good husband, I did that just that.
I have now engaged in sports magick. Most importantly, however, Argentina won, which means that this ritual becomes part of the cábala—a superstition or repeated act to influence the results of the next game. Basically, if you do something and there’s a good outcome, you have to do exactly that same thing over again the next time to ensure your team wins.
I’m pretty new to all of this, so please pardon me if I’m explaining poorly, but I think it’s the same reason people wear a lucky shirt or lucky socks over and over (sometimes without washing, which is gross, but that’s beside the point).
And then we went on a mini road trip to St Petersburg, FL so we could watch the World Cup Final with Selene’s parents.
On Saturday evening, we checked into a nice little hotel and got some dessert downtown.
Here’s the view.
But we forgot to bring palo santo. Oh my. No worries, I’m sure there’s somewhere in St Pete that sells some, right?
And that’s how we wound up at Spellcrafter, which is one of the coolest witchy shops I’ve been to for a long time.
Yes, that is a chair made entirely out of crystal and you can actually sit on it. Plenty of more store pics on my instagram if you’re curious to take a look. We acquired palo santo. Mission successful.
We also got some good food and drinks from this little cafe that was right around the corner from our hotel.
And saw what was perhaps to coolest looking bottle ever.
It’s wearing a dress!
Anyway, we dressed in matching jerseys and watched the game.
I guess the cábala wasn’t strong enough because Argentina lost.
Now, here’s my World Cup commentary: The most exciting game I watched was England vs. France because there were a lot of goals scored and that made it seem fun. I have learned a lot more about soccer, but I’m definitely more excited for the next season of Ted Lasso than I am for the next World Cup.
The drive home was excessively long due to random pockets of construction on 95. We got back around midnight and are pretty much exhausted.
That’s all for now, my friends, but stay tuned for more soon.

Every week, I compile the “official unofficial” list of tech, entrepreneur, and nerd events happening in and around Tampa Bay.
Here’s this week’s list, which I publish on my personal tech blog (and Tampa Bay’s tech blog), Global Nerdy!
