Comentarios y aportes, bienvenidos siempre.

    Mañana, la parte 1 (espero)

How-To Geek: De-Googling Android is simpler than you think—no special phone required. “I recently swapped out my beloved Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 for a de-Googled Android phone, but I was devastated to learn that my group chats would no longer be accessible. 9. Hi fedi folk - It’s lovely to be here! I just moved from mastodon.social to sunny.garden and think it’s time for an #introduction.

I’m Bearina, 30-something from Mannheim, Germany. I make #zines, #ArtistTradingCards and have become a #printmaker recently. I also got back into #photography a few days ago which was my first hobby. I got my first point and shoot camera when I was 12 and fell in love with it before that, using my parents camera and strolling through the neighborhood. I like seeing creativity around me and love to get inspired by other artists.

#SciFi is my jam and I love movies in general. And bears! Lovely creatures.

#DeGoogling right now! Also I’m working on relaunching my website and make it more #IndieWeb friendly and #accessible but also give it a bit more personality. I want to start a blog and share my thoughts. Which reminds me: Words are hard! I try my best but not always succeed.

I’m so excited to meet new people! I toot in German and English.

  14. Naty @eclecticpassions ·

@bearly_creative Great job on learning about Big Tech and . I used to be on IG (kinda sad I abandoned it because of the coffee people I met there aren't on anywhere else), but alas, I can't stand the Instagram app anymore and Meta 🤮. Hope you're enjoying the Fediverse/Mastodon as much as me.

  15. @unitedwithme @sabreW4K3

I haven't had a Google account on my phone for a long time now, although I'm not really sure how effective this strategy is in terms of privacy.

In any case, the downsides of this choice are minimal. Only apps that are closely tied to a Google account—like Keep, Calendar, Play Store, etc.—don't work; everything else works fine.

With this approach, for example, I can use Android Auto without any issues, for which there are currently no alternatives 😓

Leider zickt ausgerechnet #Authy herum.

  17. How do I start cutting American tech companies out of my digital life? This is going to be jolly inconvenient but I can't go on using companies that are supporting that orange despotic scumbag. Firstly, I'm going to do e-mail. What do good people of the Fediverse recommend please? #degoogling #deamericanisation

  18. #degoogling ?

murena.io - apart from making /e/os to replace your Android installation on Pixel and other phones - offers a free workspace based on #nextcloud and #onlyoffice.

I have tried a number of nextcloud free accounts and they all sucked. This one does not suck. You get 1gb for free. You can find out whether their office, photos, news reader, and other apps will suit you as a replacement for Google.

If you like it, pay $20 a year for 20gb to keep them afloat.

  19. I just (finally!) cancelled my #dropbox subscription as part of my move away from propritary (esp. American) tech! 🎉

I've been a subscriber since I was a teenager and it has taken me a while to work out how to untangle myself from this one!

    (I'm moving to #ProtonDrive and #BorgBackup instead)

  21. Pixel Watch 2 - Privacy Preserving Setup

I've been trying everything i could think of to make the watch work under GrapheneOS - Here is what i learned:

    • Unpairing the Watch means factory resetting it.
    • Every feature (literally everything) is google dependent (who would have thought.. i know)
    • Pairing with your phone requires the "Pixel Watch" -App to be installed on your main profile (not work, not private space) alongside Google Play Services. There's no way around.

This is obviously unacceptable. So i did a bit of research and found a way that will not only be way more practical, it will also be private.

First i created a second user on my Phone, installed Google Play Services and the pixel watch app on it, logged in with a newly created google account and completed the setup.

I know some people use a chinese version of the WearOS app to bypass the google login. Since i don't want a chinese app to configure my watch, i didn't even try that.

After the watch was set up, i continued and:

    • Deleted the user profile from which i connected the Watch
    • Enabled wireless debugging
    • Debloated the watch as good as possible (i will have to root the watch in the future to properly do it)
    • Removed the Google account in the settings
    • Cleared all Bluetooth preferences
    • Enabled Bluetooth discovery
    • Installed KDE Connect on it (not meant for WearOS but it does work barely)

The watch is now in a state where i can use it daily.

But i also want to make use of all those fancy quality-of-life features, like heartrate monitoring, sleep tracking and so on.

    Now comes the fun part.

I've created a basic Kotlin project with both a mobile and WearOS app.

    I will implement features like:

    • Notification sync
    • Call notifications
    • Media Player Control
    • Weather (openweathermap)
    • Heartrate monitoring
    • Sleep tracking
    • Do not Distrurb Sync
    • Homelab integrations (Nextcloud, Immich, Uptime Kuma, ..)
    • And much more ..

The goal is to keep the watch offline, let the phone do the heavy lifting and communicate with a selfhosted database. I may even add a frontend and an API so people can integrate it for their needs.

Sounds good but why don't you just buy an #opensource #smartwatch like the #pinetime - You may ask.

Because as much as i hate to admit it, i love the design, the look and feel of the pixel watch. And i'm sure that i'm not the only one.

I also bought this one cheap for around 120€ #refurbished. So the value i can get out of it seems pretty good to me.

So much for today. I haven't even started tackling the Bluetooth connection yet 😅. Let's see how that turns out

I have added a poll to this post to see how many people would be interested in a setup like this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, ideas or expertise in that regard.

    Cheers.

  26. I recently bought a domain name and hosting package so that my family and I could have email addresses separate from Google. However, changing my email address everywhere I have ever registered is such a hassle! 😫

For now, I have exported all my old emails using Thunderbird and set up email forwarding on Gmail, so I can update my address slowly over time, but this will take months.

Nevertheless, it's better than being dependent on Google forever.

  28. I finally Vibe Configured my way into a home on the #Fediverse.

I wanted to move off my old power hungry server and into a proper Docker setup. I did the entire configuration using only Gemini 3.

There was some Docker chaos and a few missing puzzle pieces along the way. I even built a custom site for my domain.

  29. Marketing fatto bene, l'oggetto in sé è esteticamente davvero bello secondo me.

  31. A round up of some big tech alternatives from the Guardian. Haven't been through everything but it's nice to see mainstream coverage in general.

Early days but I'm now finally trying #Vivaldi which I'm preferring to firefox and duck so far.

Very happy with #LibreOffice now and unsure why I maintained my 365 account for so long. I finally ditched it last year when they tried to almost double my bill citing "new innovations" and copilot 💩.

I had a similar experience switching to #LineageOS recently - it made me realise how many other ways Google had crept into my life - contacts, keyboard etc... #degoogling

I've just caved and set up Google calendar and contacts access BUT I've done it through #davx5 and am using the default calendar and contacts apps which came with #lineage.

Long-term I think it would be fun to move away from having #Google manage that data for me (maybe using #radicale and #syncthing? forum.syncthing.net/t/how-to-s) but that can be an adventure for another day.

  36. Degoogling progress: over the last two days I’ve deleted over twenty thousand unneeded messages in my Gmail account and downloaded the remaining ones onto my machine. I’ve opened a new mail account with a European provider that offers ad-free, no-tracking, privacy-respecting email with multiple accounts.

I did run into a wall last night when I was trying to update the DNS records on my domain to point to the new provider. My internet provider has this great easy-to use interface that lets you see and modify domain records. Except, when I’d query the name server, the changes I made never happened. I put in a support ticket and went to bed.

This morning I woke up to a reply. The support people kindly explained that the interface I was using (found under a big button called “DNS Settings”) doesn’t actually work, and I have to go to a completely different interface called “Client Area” and do it there. Silly me!

  37. Maybe, there should be a new #browserExtension like #SponsorBlock, #DeArrow, #CaptainFact, and #tournesol, to which people can upload their videos without #AI filters if they are affected by #YouTube's AI filters. Projects like #Piped and #Invidious could natively support this and directly play the non-AI impacted videos.

  40. App review: Image Toolbox
    ★★★★☆

An extremely powerful image editor for Android. And not just the usual features like crop, adjust contrast or brightness, maybe apply a filter, but you can do batch edits, format conversion, scaling the actual pixel image, editing metadata...all the things that mobile apps tend to hide behind the curtain. And it can preserve EXIF data when you want it to.

  41. #Degoogling #android sure ain't easy.

Certain apps reliance upon #GooglePlay makes it almost impossible to get rid of.

For instance, I've got an app for a grocery store that allows payment through your card by just scanning a QR code.

The payment method refuses to be activated when the Google Play app is deactivated.

It's pretty obvious to anyone: this is #MonopolyByDefault, #VendorLockin and even a form of #DRM.

I already confirmed my identity by way of #BankID. What more is needed?
