  1. When hiking in the great outdoors, people generally avoid trampling the vegetation. But journalist Amanda Heidt took great care to do the opposite on a recent trip to Canyonlands National Park.

    Heidt was accompanying scientists who study the dirt between the plants, the biocrust: a fragile community of microbes, fungi, lichens and more that often grows atop the soil in arid landscapes.
