Some learning takes time: that odd language button in the post field.
As I post mainly in English, it's my default. I never changed it in posts! Did you know that it sets the possibility for your readers to get translations?! And more. I didn't.
Set it to the language of your post! I write German, I change it to German = my English-speaking followers get a translation. I don't do that: no translation service.

Una buena regla de etiqueta fediversal podría ser:
a) no compartir para leer una nota si es de una web que decide bloquear el acceso a su lectura a quien no se registra en ella (o, en otros casos, a quien no se suscribe y paga).
b) compartirla, pero avisando que se está compartiendo una nota que lxs demás posiblemente no puedan leer.
c) compartirla, pero tomándose el trabajo de hacerla accesible de algún modo (https://archive.is/ es una buena opción, aunque también podría subirse a otro lado, pegarla completa en el toot, o algo que permita materializar el sentido de propagarla).

Just found this out. May be different on mainline Mastodon.
If you are running Glitch-SOC and want to adjust your max character count on posts you can add MAX_TOOT_CHARS= to your .env.production file and it will apparently control the max character count that way without the hunting and modifying program files.
Not sure if it works on normal Mainline Mastodon instances and this is only for instance owners. Users are still bound to their preferences for character count.
But it seems too have worked for me.

"Why didn't I figure this out years ago department" stuff...
I tried setting some of my favorite accounts to "receive all notifications" and that was a big mistake! So, I've been putting those accounts into an A-List list so hopefully I won't miss any posts from my favs (without blowing my notifications up).

I don't know if this is how things work for other Fediverse apps, but on Mastodon, if you reply to someone's post and remove their tag in your reply they won't be notified about the reply so there's a good chance they won't see it.
Therefore, if you're trying to have a conversation with somebody, leave the tag in.
If you're dunking on them and trying to hide your reply so others will see it and they won't, that's shitty; don't do that.

Is there a way to mute posts that have links to some outside sources?
I want to mute posts that link to X, YouTube, FB and Instagram.
I don't want to mute the accounts, or do it on each post.
Any idea?

Changing to #Moshidon has been a revelation. Being able to create custom timelines consisting of lists of hashtags is simply awesome.
This means you don't have to follow all the hashtags and cloud your regular timelines. And normal lists can only utilize accounts. Not hashtags..
The downside is that it isn't supported by #Mastodon itself.

When you boost it shares it to your feed and all your followers. Without an algorithm running, boost are what makes content spread and sorta “go viral”. A boost is pretty similar to a retweet in Twitter or share in fb.
The culture on mastodon is to be more generous with boosts, to help posts you like get to more folk.
Boost other new folks especially, help them find their people.

if you ever *don't* want your post 10 comments down in a silly thread to go global, you can turn that off with the quiet public option
everyone can still see your post, but they have to dive into the thread it's in to find it, they won't see it pop up in their feed
important caveat:
you can not edit this option after you submit your post

Anyone using @mastohost to host their own instance on their own subdomain?
I've been giving zirk(.)us $5/month and MastoHost's solo plan is only $1 more, so it's a very tempting option vs. trying to find a new instance and hoping for the best.
NOTE: I don't have the technical ability nor interest in going full DIY, so no recommendations needed for that angle.

I'm still all in on Mastodon, but it seems like zirk(.)us may have been abandoned so I'm going to start looking for another instance to move to in the near future.
Any recommendations for a well-moderated, financially stable, active but relatively chill alternative?

#SlowMode is pretty mandatory if you want to have a look at posts from other instances than your own (Life feeds > Other servers/All).
It seems nigh impossible to follow the posts unless you have Slow Mode on in the Mastodon Preferences.
It makes it a whole lot nicer when you press a button to load a bunch of posts and it doesn't just automatically keep flooding. You'll get peace of mind to look at the posts without it autoscrolling like a racecar past the screen.

With Mastodon, there is a lot of control in your hands about the content you want to (or don't want to) see.
You can use the Filters feature to hide certain keywords or topics that you do not want to see.

There are two effective ways of participating in a discussion topic: #groups and #hashtags.
For example, choose your <topic> and type <topic> in the search box at the top of your screen. Then:
- "Profiles": spot one ending in "@a.gup.pe" then on the right push "Follow";
- "Hashtags": spot an item and then in the top right-hand corner "Follow the hashtag".You may enter a peculiar discussion below, if it piques you:
