Finally the process to delete my locked discord account is underway.

I'm sad to lose connections and rooms I was participating in, but locking me behind "verify by adding phone number" is not okay. I don't want to use it that bad.

I've been using matrix more than discord anyway, and my employer hosts a matrix server, so that's neat.

To those who know my Discord account, I will remain completely unavailable there for the foreseeable future.

I tended to use Discord heavily over Tor as a means of controlling which IP I give it. However, this caused my account to be unusable without providing a phone number. It's not really useful to provide an anonymous IP address to Discord if they already have your number, so I turned it off and caved for a slight moment in order to access the one place I need to access with it. It's a workaround at best but whatever.

I also have an another account I exclusively use for my real life and I had to use my phone number for a specific server. Honestly, it makes little to no sense for my personal phone number to be tied to an online identity I want to keep my personal life separate from, so I moved that number to my IRL account at the cost of losing my other, more used Discord account. I will remain unreachable there until I can give Discord a phone number, which I will not give it unless it's not possible to trace back to me.

I want to reinforce the idea of using more open platforms such as IRCv3, XMPP and Fluxer because they are many times friendlier for folks that want to keep their dignity. As a result of that, beings that live in countries without internet freedom (say, Russia) are able to talk to other beings on a VPN without having to give away their phone number and break their anonymity. Moreover, you support open messaging protocols rather than support a degrading, exclusive, invasive, and sleazy capitalist machine. The only tradeoff as a result of preserving the users dignity is a platform more open to abuse, but I'd be much willing to take that over leaving behind those forced to live lacking internet freedom.

If you're a regular user and don't manage any communities, get you and the beings willing to move from Discord to an open platform. If you manage a community on Discord, make a community on an open platform, and try to get people to use that more by any means. If you're community absolutely has to stay on Discord, create a bridge for those who would prefer to use an open platform. If you maintain Discord projects, consider working on an open platform instead.

Aplikacja została napisana specjalnie pod architekturę ARM, co eliminuje konieczność uruchamiania jej przez warstwę emulacji. Zmiana ta bezpośrednio przekłada się na płynność działania programu i mniejsze zużycie baterii w nowych laptopach.

Cichy debiut wyczekiwanej wersji

Jak zauważyli redaktorzy serwisu Neowin, twórcy Discorda nie zorganizowali oficjalnej premiery i nie wydali żadnego komunikatu prasowego. Instalator w wersji ARM po prostu pojawił się do pobrania na stronie producenta.

Do tej pory posiadacze komputerów z systemem Windows on ARM, chcąc korzystać z Discorda, mieli do wyboru dwa wyjścia:

• uruchomienie usługi w karcie przeglądarki internetowej,
• instalację standardowej aplikacji (x86), która działała za pośrednictwem wbudowanego w system emulatora Microsoft Prism.

Choć mechanizmy emulacji w Windows 11 radzą sobie coraz lepiej, uruchamianie w ten sposób oprogramowania zawsze wiąże się z narzutem obliczeniowym.

Dlaczego natywny kod jest tak ważny?

Przejście z emulacji na aplikację natywną przynosi wymierne korzyści techniczne. Program skompilowany bezpośrednio pod procesory Snapdragon X uruchamia się szybciej, oferuje płynniejszy interfejs, a przede wszystkim w mniejszym stopniu obciąża układ scalony. W przypadku komunikatora, który zazwyczaj działa w tle przez cały czas pracy komputera, niższe zapotrzebowanie na moc obliczeniową zauważalnie wydłuża czas pracy laptopa na jednym ładowaniu.

Samo oprogramowanie nie różni się funkcjonalnie od wersji znanej ze standardowych komputerów PC. Pojawienie się Discorda w wersji ARM to także ważny sygnał dla całego ekosystemu Microsoftu. Dołączanie kluczowych platform społecznościowych do bazy natywnych aplikacji pokazuje, że nowa architektura zadomawia się na rynku, a deweloperzy widzą sens w optymalizacji swojego kodu.

Excerpt: "Amandla Thomas-Johnson had attended a protest targeting companies that supplied weapons to Israel at a #CornellUniversity job fair in 2024 for all of five minutes, but the action got him banned from campus. When President Donald Trump assumed office and issued a series of executive orders targeting students who protested in support of #Palestinians, Thomas-Johnson and his friend Momodou Taal went into hiding.

"Google informed Thomas-Johnson via a brief email in April that it had already shared his metadata with the Department of Homeland Security, as The Intercept previously reported. But the full extent of the information the agency sought — including usernames, addresses, itemized list of services, including any IP masking services, telephone or instrument numbers, subscriber numbers or identities, and credit card and bank account numbers — was not previously known.

" 'I’d already seen the subpoena request that Google and Meta had sent to Momodou [Taal], and I knew that he had gotten in touch with a lawyer and the lawyer successfully challenged that,' Thomas-Johnson said. 'I was quite surprised to see that I didn’t have that opportunity.'

"The subpoena provides no justification for why ICE is asking for this information, except that it’s required 'in connection with an investigation or inquiry relating to the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.' In the subpoena, ICE requests that Google not 'disclose the existence of this summons for indefinite period of time.'
Thomas-Johnson, who is British, believes that ICE requested that information to track and eventually detain him — but he had already fled to Geneva, Switzerland, and is now in Dakar, Senegal.

"The #ElectronicFrontierFoundation, which is representing Thomas-Johnson, and the #ACLU of Northern California sent a letter to Google, #Amazon, #Apple, #Discord, #Meta, #Microsoft, and #Reddit last week calling on tech companies to resist similar subpoenas in the future from #DHS without court intervention. The letter asks the companies to provide users with as much notice as possible before complying with a subpoena to give them the opportunity to fight it, and to resist gag orders that would prevent the #TechCompanies from informing targets that a subpoena was issued.

" 'Your promises to protect the privacy of users are being tested right now. As part of the federal government’s unprecedented campaign to target critics of its conduct and policies, agencies like DHS have repeatedly demanded access to the identities and information of people on your services,' the letter reads.

" 'Based on our own contact with targeted users, we are deeply concerned your companies are failing to challenge unlawful surveillance and defend user privacy and speech.' "
