Recently tested out vc on #fluxer with fellow smol bean @simonthevampyre
It's really good now and on par with discord which is an amazing improvement compared to a few months ago considering its a really small project.
Only thing we were not able to test was screenshare audio as thats not implemented in web yet but seems to be a thing on the official client which atm is an app image on linux.
Mobile has a client but its still really early but works for my purposes as I never rely on notifications from apps as my personal policy with anything mobile is I will check when I have time and so on.
#discord is a sinking ship and the fact some folxs have still not even made an account on fluxer or other better safer alternatives speaks volumes to liking the boiling water.
Fluxer is basically discord before it enshitified itself with shop slop and orb slop nonsense along with discord carrying water for fascists and AI oligarchs.

Discord (on iOS) seems to have a bug: It may show a "server tag" (green leaf and "TCRF" in the screenshot) you no longer have access to. If you go to "edit profile", it incorrectly says your server tag is already "none".
I got my server tag to disappear by selecting another server tag, saving, selecting "none" and saving again. (Seems to be a common type of software bug.)
(Note: TCRF wasn't the server tag I wanted to get rid of, and I haven't been banned from there. I'm just using it as an example.)

Hay una pregunta que me parece más útil que cualquier discusión sobre tecnología, innovación o redes sociales:
¿Cuántas plataformas puedo eliminar sin que mi vida cambie en absoluto?
Durante años nos enseñaron que registrarse era progreso.
Abrir una cuenta.
Crear un perfil.
Aceptar términos que nadie lee.
Entregar datos a empresas que jamás conoceremos.
Seguir marcas, políticos, celebridades y multimillonarios como si nuestra atención fuera un aplauso gratuito.
Y acumulamos cuentas como quien acumula objetos en un cuarto de San Alejo digital.
Yo también lo hice.
Tuve Facebook.
Tuve Twitter.
Tuve TikTok.
Tuve Threads.
Tuve LinkedIn.
Tuve Flickr.
Tuve Discord.
Cada una prometía algo distinto.
Más conexiones.
Más oportunidades.
Más visibilidad.
Más comunidad.
Más futuro.
Con el tiempo descubrí algo incómodo:
La mayoría no me aportaba nada que justificara seguir allí.
No mejoraban mi trabajo.
No mejoraban mis relaciones.
No mejoraban mi vida.
Simplemente seguían existiendo porque un día abrí una cuenta y nunca me tomé el trabajo de cerrarla.
Por eso empecé a hacer limpieza.
Facebook afuera.
Twitter afuera.
TikTok afuera.
Threads afuera.
LinkedIn afuera.
Flickr afuera.
Discord afuera.
Y ocurrió algo sorprendente.
Nada.
No perdí clientes.
No perdí amigos.
No desaparecieron oportunidades.
No colapsó mi carrera.
No cambió absolutamente nada.
Al final quedaron dos supervivientes:
Instagram y WhatsApp.
Instagram porque todavía funciona como vitrina, portafolio y punto de contacto.
WhatsApp porque, nos guste o no, se convirtió en infraestructura básica de la vida moderna.
Todo lo demás era equipaje.
La madurez digital no consiste en estar en todas partes.
Consiste en identificar qué sobra.
Cada cuenta eliminada es una contraseña menos.
Una notificación menos.
Una base de datos menos con mis datos.
Un algoritmo menos peleando por mi atención.
Una empresa menos vigilando mis hábitos.
Nos enseñaron que la libertad digital consistía en conectarnos a todo.
Empiezo a sospechar que la libertad digital consiste en poder irse.
Cerrar la cuenta.
Borrar la aplicación.
Y descubrir que el mundo sigue girando exactamente igual.
Tal vez la pregunta más inteligente de la era digital no sea:
¿En cuántas plataformas estoy?
Sino:
¿Cuántas puedo eliminar hoy sin que mi vida cambie en absoluto?
Y ni les cuento de eliminar aplicaciones de domicilios, tan útiles como cagar en agua potable. Ahí también descubrí algo perturbador: cocinar sigue funcionando, la tienda de la esquina sigue existiendo y el mundo tampoco se acaba.
Quizá llevamos años confundiendo comodidad con necesidad.

Still no word on when Discord will implement their global age verification (originally scheduled for March 2026, it was pushed back to the second half of 2026). However, Discord has a new vendor, Incode, and has been running tests with them, so its still happening. #privacy #discord #ageverification

Finally the process to delete my locked discord account is underway.
I'm sad to lose connections and rooms I was participating in, but locking me behind "verify by adding phone number" is not okay. I don't want to use it that bad.
I've been using matrix more than discord anyway, and my employer hosts a matrix server, so that's neat.

looks like something changed in the latest discord client to break the legacy Stream Deck plugin.
Fortunately, there's a native OpenAction plugin. The setup lists out everything you need to do; but discord wouldn't let me set the redirect unless I used127.0.0.1instead oflocalhost.
If you're using the flatpak like me, you will also likely need to close out the OpenDeck app and run (or use flatseal):

Projects looking to use polyproto can start with just the core identity federation while continuing to use their own APIs, allowing federation between that project's servers, and later implement the chat extension to federate with other projects.

I really like Chris Boden. I think his teaching and his outlook on life is generally positive and it really seems like he wants to make the world a better place.
BUT....
His latest video on the discord privacy issue, really misses the mark.
It feels like his stance is that privacy is already gone and we never had it and almost feels like he thinks it is our fault.
"Look in your hand"... a mention of your cell phone is the same excuse that Flock Safety CEO says he can track you. because you made a decision to use a smart phone, you don't deserve privacy from any one or any corporation.
I feel like this is privacy Nihilism at best and it doesn't help build the better future I know Chris wants.
be better, because I do want to see something cool.

Users Are Too Dependent on Centralized Techno-Fascist Corporate Structure to Ever Leave Discord
I’m watching people scatter into countless real-time chat alternatives to Discord after Discord started pulling the age-verification and age-gating card.
It’s very frustrating because people are entirely missing the point of a community and how social networks work. Real-time platforms and social media networks only work well when a large number of people share the same space at the same time. If everyone creates separate servers or competing apps, the result is fragmentation that makes it unviable.
One reason why Bluesky became so successful is the invitation and starter-pack move. It essentially allowed people to move collectively as cliques. Bluesky used invitations and starter packs to move groups of friends together. This kept communities intact. Moving as cliques preserves network structure, whereas random scattering does not. People aren’t do not seem to intend to move as cliques or subgraphs of networks off of Discord. And the whole reason people were on Discord was to host their communities, so an alternative becomes pointless if your community doesn’t remain intact.
Instead of an active, strongly connected, possibly distributed network, you get dozens of small pockets. I am referring to a potential distributed network rather than a single centralized platform, because Matrix is an example of a decentralized chat protocol. Not all alternatives have to be centralized like Discord. Technically, many older chat protocols, such as XMPP and IRC, are examples of federated real-time synchronous messaging. They allowed communication between users on different, independently operated servers. Federation means that multiple servers can interconnect so that users from separate networks can exchange messages with one another seamlessly.
Decentralized alternatives would not be a problem if people moved to the same distributed network as cohesive groups. However, what I am seeing is that people move in disconnected and stochastic ways to entirely separate distributed networks, so communities are not kept intact. For example, when people move to XMPP servers or Matrix servers, it bifurcates and disconnects social networks. Notice I said XMPP or Matrix, which logically means people are on Matrix but not XMPP, or they are on XMPP but not Matrix. That implies a person would need to be on both Matrix and XMPP to speak to their original community from Discord if it split down the middle. To synchronize conversations in chats, there would need to be a bridge. It’s a pretty complicated solution.
The likely outcome is that people will remain on the dominant platform because of its scale and structure. The deeper irony is that while people may want independence from corporate platforms, they often struggle to organize effectively without the centralized structure those platforms provide. They’ve become so dependent on corporate structures to support their communities that they have no clue how to organize their own social networks in a sustainable way.
I’ve always been an internet nerd, but most of my social life has been offline. I view my interactions with the social app layer of the internet as a game, so losing that domain of the Internet is not devastating to me.
I’ll give you an example. This is a WordPress site. You hear this insincere nostalgia from Millennials and Gen X for a simulacrum that never was, especially concerning forums. Check this out: when you go into the plugin installation section of WordPress, this is on the second row you see:
That means any WordPress site has the capability to host a forum. They’re nostalgic for a setup where you can use a simple install script on any hosting service to install WordPress. After that, you can then just add a plugin to turn it into a forum. Hell, they can do this on WordPress.com if they don’t want to self-host.
You can make a forum, but no one will use it because they’d rather use a centralized platform like Reddit. Users have become so dependent on corporations to structure and organize communities that they can’t do it themselves. It’s sort of like the cognitive debt that accrues when people outsource their thinking to AI.
The issue is not that forums are hard to host or create; rather, the issue is that people have become so dependent on centralized corporate structures that they can’t maintain or organize their own communities, which is why everyone ends up on Reddit or Discord. A reason I keep hearing for why people don’t want to leave Discord is that it’s hard to recreate the community structure that Discord’s features provide. They claim that they want independence from corporate platforms, but rely on the centralized structure those platforms provide to function socially.
People say they want decentralized freedom, but in practice they depend on centralized platforms to maintain social cohesion. Stochastically scattering to the digital winds of the noosphere destroys the very communities they’re trying to preserve.

When President Donald Trump assumed office and issued a series of executive orders targeting students who protested in support of #Palestinians, Thomas-Johnson and his friend Momodou Taal went into hiding."Google informed Thomas-Johnson via a brief email in April that it had already shared his metadata with the Department of Homeland Security, as The Intercept previously reported. But the full extent of the information the agency sought — including usernames, addresses, itemized list of services, including any IP masking services, telephone or instrument numbers, subscriber numbers or identities, and credit card and bank account numbers — was not previously known.
" 'I’d already seen the subpoena request that Google and Meta had sent to Momodou [Taal], and I knew that he had gotten in touch with a lawyer and the lawyer successfully challenged that,' Thomas-Johnson said. 'I was quite surprised to see that I didn’t have that opportunity.'
"The subpoena provides no justification for why ICE is asking for this information, except that it’s required 'in connection with an investigation or inquiry relating to the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.' In the subpoena, ICE requests that Google not 'disclose the existence of this summons for indefinite period of time.'
Thomas-Johnson, who is British, believes that ICE requested that information to track and eventually detain him — but he had already fled to Geneva, Switzerland, and is now in Dakar, Senegal."The #ElectronicFrontierFoundation, which is representing Thomas-Johnson, and the #ACLU of Northern California sent a letter to Google, #Amazon, #Apple, #Discord, #Meta, #Microsoft, and #Reddit last week calling on tech companies to resist similar subpoenas in the future from #DHS without court intervention. The letter asks the companies to provide users with as much notice as possible before complying with a subpoena to give them the opportunity to fight it, and to resist gag orders that would prevent the #TechCompanies from informing targets that a subpoena was issued.

As part of the federal government’s unprecedented campaign to target critics of its conduct and policies, agencies like DHS have repeatedly demanded access to the identities and information of people on your services,' the letter reads.
