Did not realize how deep rabbit hole installing Matrix server was. It's now up, managed to hack in admin user, and played around a bit.
I'm checking out if this would be a good replacement for Discord. I've tested the other servers already. Zulip has been my favorite so far.
Current mood is that this looks like a bad replacement, but it's hard to pass the federation feature in Matrix. I can't yet register new users, and it looks like a can of worms. Moderation and access rights seem to be limited. There are rather good UIs, but not as good as Discord. But I won't judge yet while my own knowledge is lacking.
Tomorrow I start looking what the hell is MAS, and how do new users register. There are also some kind of bridges available. They might help migrating away from Discord.

1. Learned about @ultramarine GNU/Linux, a #Fedora based #GNU / #Linux distro. My only disappointment is that the OS uses #Discord exclusively.
2. #FSF #LibrePhone project is going well and is still making progress that will help #LineageOS, #postmarketOS and other #FreeSoftware mobile OSes.
3. @conservancy is selling #OpenWRT routers. Free routers are an essential item in every home. Don't let your ISP control your home network.Can't wait for tomorrow!

Seems like Discord has started or maybe accelerated its enshittification process. I just got the second popup ad I've seen, and that's two in a week.
They did a terrible job on the ads. There's no natural way to integrate an ad, so… they just have it appear. And I'm sure they're reporting high engagement to advertisers - because there's no clear, easy way to get rid of it, just a tiny hamburger menu. If you want high engagement, make the ads difficult to dismiss and easy to unintentionally click.

Recommendations wanted: a very simple lightweight discord bot, which lets server members create a ticket to start a private thread with the mods.
Everything I find by searching is WAY overcomplicated and overengineered. Ideally I don't want it to have any features other than simple tickets.

One of the reasons I'm not jumping on #Blaugust (other than just being kind of tired already from #junited, lol) is that it's organized on #Discord.
Not hating on folks for using what they know, but... nah. I'd rather stick with stuff organized on the fedi, or at least... you know, irc, or email, or carrier pidgeon, or smoke signal... or telepathy... or by butterfly.

10 of 17 contacts I have a chat open with on Discord are suddenly just one letter and three dots. Like, everywhere. Not just the chat. Also their name in the contacts list, their name in the chat on every message and their name when I click the profile. In full screen. Persists after Discord restart. This includes my own account. WTF? Who pushed to production on Friday?!

Phantom Stealer is a .NET-based credential-harvesting malware that collects browser credentials, saved passwords, session cookies, cryptocurrency wallet files, and system fingerprints from infected machines. Distributed through phishing emails, cracked software, and malicious links on Discord and Telegram, it employs multiple loader variants including steganography-based delivery and PowerShell shellcode injection. The malware uses extensive anti-analysis techniques including virtualization detection, API patching to disable AMSI and ETW, and timing-based sandbox evasion. It targets Chromium and Gecko-based browsers, cryptocurrency wallets, FileZilla credentials, WinSCP configurations, and Outlook profiles. Additional capabilities include keylogging, screen capture, clipboard monitoring with cryptocurrency address replacement, and Wi-Fi credential theft. The malware achieves persistence through registry Run keys or Startup folder entries.

Am I the only one who is bothered by the fact that if I call someone on Discord *I* hear a ringtone? This super annoying "Hey I want your attention!" even though I am not the one who has to pick up? Why does it do that??
