Wow, that was unexpected. I've played terraria before and had beaten moon lord on legendary diff and that butterfly thingy at daytime and got the rainbow sword.. thingy.
I've seen Calamity mod and had seen my brother and his friends play a bit bout it.
Now that I thought about it, it kinda was expected cos it came from Discord. It really is where weirdos, nerds, groomers, geeks, predators, preys and other socially inept people nest and congregate.
Good thing I don't use it anymore. That place has always given me the heebie-jeebies. Besides, I don't have internet friends and don't plan to make one, lol.
I mean, it's been 7 years and I've been fine. Sometimes I wish I knew what it feels like to have friends long term but I'm self-sufficient and I haven't really needed other people's validations throughout the years cos I know what I wanna do for myself.

Huh, only now notice #Fluxer added a (supposedly better) background noise filter into their app. Nice, that's the one thing my friends and me were still missing. Gonna try that later, I can't wait to fully discard #Discord.
Their work on all the self-hosting docs is supposedly also proceeding, which many people here are most likely primarily interested in.

Okay, so, with my decade+ of experience of being on social media, I've noticed a trend within recent years about pretty much all social platforms. I think there's a critical mass of users on a platform where it becomes impossible to properly enforce. Inevitably, there will be a sheer volume of bad actors that no matter what the platform does, cannot stop completely and it becomes public knowledge/source of scrutiny.
There isn't a single large platform I can name that doesn't have the problem of toxic behavior, child abuse/exploitation, NSFW rings, (the kind that aren't tagged/gated properly) etc. Doesn't matter what their moderation policies/enforcement is. It doesn't matter if a platform like #Discord files millions of NCMEC reports or bans millions of accounts a year. There's simply too many malicious users to handle and it's impossible to prevent them from coming back in some form or another or new ones joining the platform.
Sure, if you have say, 10,000 users, that's way easier for a small team of mods to handle, but what about 1 million? 10 million? 100+ million? There's no way a company/organization can afford a team to handle that sheer volume of communication and interaction, and we all know automated systems are deeply flawed and clearly do not stop the problem. Inevitably, a larger and larger number of bad actors slip through the cracks. Those cracks widen as more users join and moderation systems become increasingly strained. Regarding the NCMEC bit, Discord alone files over 500,000 reports, do you seriously think the NCMEC has the resources to look into every report and do something about it? Obviously not. And that's just Discord.
It's a huge reason why punitive actions don't work well, nor things like telling parents to monitor their kids. There's simply too many to keep track of all at once, and it's why I stress the importance of educational methods when it comes to protecting people. Education is a form of preventative measure instead of all the reactive ones we see on these platforms. Teaching a kid why this kind of content is harmful, how to avoid it, what to do if they do come across it, how to not get sucked into it or become a bad actor themself, etc will do way more than just a losing arms race of updating moderation systems and filters. It better addresses the cause rather than just the symptom.
All of this is simply the consequence of mass-centralization and the network effect on steroids. It's easier than ever before to connect with so many people and the possibility for interaction-- good or bad exponentially increases. Until eventually, it becomes unsustainable and causes huge swaths of harm.

Yesterday, I got invited into a #matrix chatroom for the first time. (I have a #tuwunel server and #fluffychat client)
Talking uniquely about text messages, I think Matrix could replace many #chat apps:
- Facebook #messenger
- #telegram
- #whatsapp
- etc.
But only if you don't use voice, video and screen sharing too much. I haven't tried them, but I've heard some people saying it's not good enough yet even though some features might already exist.
I guess it really depends on your needs, but I don't think it's good enough to replace #discord yet.
We would need at least voice chats to work nicely. You can still use #mumble but there's no way to have a one app that truly does everything yet. -
I'll miss my #HOTAS / #HOSAS / #SIMPIT / #DIY #Discord channels starting next month.

I tried to install #matrix #synapse and decided to give up for now.
It seems like it is a common pain in the community, and I can agree.
Now, in my case, I'm self hosting using #yunohost because I value simplicity. Whenever, I try to install it, it is painfully long, gives me errors, fails and uninstalls everything.
Just like Linux, if self-hosting is overly complex, I'm not interested.
For now, I'll stick to Matrix #tuwunel . It doesn't give me voice chat and screen sharing, but text chat works. That's gonna be good enough for now.
That being said, we will need a decent free and open source #foss alternative to #discord asap

My current #matrix server uses #tuwunel , which is a lightweight version of matrix. With the default #yunohost installation, I don't think it has voice chat and screensharing. And so far, I only used the #fluffychat client.
The real full-featured version is #synapse . I wanna try hosting it myself and see if it can actually replace #discord with the Element client. -
