  1. KitGuru: Forza Forums celebrates its 20th anniversary by shutting down the site. “While a disappointing conclusion, what is perhaps even more unfortunate is the fact that ‘we do not plan to archive or replace the Forums in their current form’ – meaning 20 years of fan discourse will be wiped from the internet.”

  11. University of Exeter: Even when people’s opinions are hard to change, online comments can shape how political social media content is perceived, study shows. “The findings come from two large research projects involving more than 11,000 respondents across five European countries. Across both studies, researchers found that comments appearing underneath social media posts can influence how […]

  16. There's an online text-based MUD that I've been playing since around 2004 (I've been playing in MUDs since finding them online as far back as 1994, before the web was a thing). By which I mean I started playing it when it came out in 2004, then left somewhere around 2010ish. Then recently came back to play a totally different character last year. This is an RP heavy MUD (plus you can be trans, or NB, and choose your race or change your race, lots of options). Players have a lot of control over making things happen. They get to design everything from clothing to furniture to food and beverages. The Gods tend to be real (and played by real people). Part of what I enjoyed about it was that PvP on the main plane of existence was monitored and controlled. So it was possible to avoid a lot of griefing that happens in other games.

This time around I've created a cook who is running a fine dining restaurant. The admins recently added a whole bunch of stuff to make running a restaurant more feasible and I'm really down for this. It's got my creative juices flowing again.

But I do miss when there were more people around to interact with. I don't miss when most of the people around to interact with were just jerks who wanted to RP being an asshole and just expected everyone around them to take it in the name of "good RP". Fuck that noise. I get wanting to play, say, an asshole who does dickish stuff in a game. The thing is, in order to do this, you have to be an asshole to other players who are not assholes. It's tiresome and I don't enjoy being the butt of your mean-girl RP thankyouverymuch. I'm here to have fun, to be cute, to cook and brew beverages, and just generally have a nice time.

The game is dying, of course, for a lot of reasons. But at least some of it is because 1) no one reads any more and 2) They want flashy video games, not games where they have to READ the SCREEN to know what's going on.

This is a really long-winded way of me saying "Hey, come on over here and play! It's a little boring sometimes, but it can be fun". If you do come over, I'm in the city of Gaudiguch, and I have a restaurant based there. Come play! (Feel free to ask me questions or for help if you decide to play)

  23. Source: Journalism lost its culture of sharing. “We crunched the numbers, and your hunch is right. In fact, it’s probably worse than you think. The data are clear: The open-source culture that defined an earlier era of online journalism has collapsed. Activity on GitHub has cratered. In 2016, news organizations posted more than 2,000 public projects to the code-sharing site. Last year, that […]

  24. Washington Post: Outrage over ICE has spilled into typically apolitical online spaces. This link goes to the syndicated MSN version which has no paywall. “The moderator didn’t know how this post would go over; the forum’s most heated dispute had been about whether other animals being played like bongos should be allowed. But the anti-ICE post exploded, receiving more than 40,000 Reddit […]

  25. Geeks Are Sexy: Stack Overflow Is Dead, Long Live Its Training Data. “The numbers are brutal. Monthly questions have collapsed from more than 200,000 in 2014 to just 3,862 in December 2025. The reason is obvious: 84% of developers now use AI coding assistants. Turns out people prefer instant answers over being publicly shamed for forgetting a semicolon.” I tried Stack Overflow once. ONCE. It […]

  26. NiemanLab: Newsrooms are taking comments seriously again. “Reader comments are having a mini renaissance. After years of chasing social media engagement and being burned in the process, publishers have realized that commenting has a tangible value — to the broader public, yes, but also in terms of advertising and subscription revenue.”
