Tras unos meses perfeccionado el rediseño en las versiones de desarrollo, al fin Firefox se renueva visualmente para todos. Llega muy tarde, en mi opinión, porque creo firmemente que muchos usuarios novatos escucharon hablar bien del navegador en los últimos años pero se encontraron con una interfaz de hace dos décadas, llena de aristas.

Ahora todo es más redondeado, como el diseño de mi Firefox que comenté aquí hace más de dos años. Esta actualización no va mucho más allá de estos cambios estéticos, pero no por ello deja de ser importante. Ojalá de alguna u otra forma se consiga revertir la caída porque el mundo necesita una alternativa seria a Chromium.

Han tenido que pasar siete años para que una plataforma de streaming en la nube de videojuegos sea compatible al fin con un navegador ajeno a la familia Chromium. Siempre tuvo cierta lógica que jugar en Stadia tuviera ese requisito al pertenecer a Google, pero sus sucesores pecaron de la misma incompatibilidad. Ahora Nvidia y Mozilla consiguen enmendarlo en GeForce Now y el tiempo dirá si Amazon y su servicio Luna le siguen los pasos.

Parece mentira que tras tanto tiempo las cosas sigan tan verdes. Hay que poner en valor lo que consiguió Google adelantándose al futuro con un producto redondo al que solo le falló el marketing y la confianza del público.

Los usuarios de Firefox llevamos tiempo experimentando problemas cargando vídeos de YouTube y todo parece deberse a un pequeñito error técnico que, curiosamente, solo afecta a este navegador y no a los que están basados en Chromium. Supongo que ser el único exponente ajeno al adpocalipsis no ayuda a que en Google se esfuercen por investigar y solucionar los problemas de su propia web.

Hace tiempo que me acostumbré a que sus vídeos no se carguen tan rápido como en Chrome y lo agradezco porque me evita perder demasiado tiempo en esa página.

Por si una versión nueva al mes nos parecía poco, en Mozilla quieren competir con Chrome y compañía actualizándose cada 15 días. No sé qué se gana compitiendo por tener el número más grande acompañando, pero parece que se lo toman muy en serio.

La excusa es quitar presión a los desarrolladores, pero yo lo que tengo claro es que será más complicado hablar de novedades ilusionantes cuando salgan a cuentagotas. Quizás la alternativa sea ignorarlos y hacer un recopilatorio señalando los cambios cada tres meses.

So @mozilla shut down their own Mastodon instance, don't post on their mastodon.social account anymore either, have no official Firefox presence on the Fediverse anymore (besides developer-focused accounts @firefoxwebdevs and @firefoxnightly, which do a great job but serve a different audience), and then pull shit like this. What an utter disappointment indeed.

Firefox Nova es el proyecto de modernización visual de la interfaz de Firefox que llegará durante este año y es algo que me parece necesario para ganar nuevos usuarios porque a nivel de diseño se percibe muy tosco. Pero tampoco será milagroso y si quiere ser compatencia de las otras alternativas, más vale que tengan preparado algo más que un lavado de cara.

Este rediseño promete porque se ve bonito pero va a romper todo el trabajo que hice hace años tematizando Firefox a mi gusto. Al mismo tiempo, veo que incluye muchos de los cambios que he ido introduciendo y seguro que lo hace de forma más óptima… así que repersonalizarlo debería ser mucho más fácil.

Google Chrome blockt uBlock Origin & Co.

Nun ist es bald soweit. Es gibt Berichte, dass Google relevante Flags für MV2-Erweiterungen entfernt. Damit können Erweiterungen wie uBlock Origin und Co. nicht mehr installiert werden. Das bedeutet, es können keine Erweiterungen mehr eingesetzt werden, die Werbung, Tracking und dergleichen blockieren und Benutzer davor schützen – zumindest nicht, basierend auf die alte MV2-Schnittstelle.

Chromium 150 lost kExtensionManifestV2Disabled flag and will not be able to install MV2 extensions from Chrome Web Store. In Google Chrome, Blocking WebRequest permission is available only to MV2 extensions or policy-installed extensions. Users will still be able to load extensions in debug mode via “allow legacy MV2 extensions” flag. Other Chromium-based browsers will be able to relatively trivially continue support for MV2 and blocking WebRequest, at least for now.

Dies betrifft natürlich auch alle Derivate. Letztere können diese Funktion übergangsmäßig noch zur Verfügung stellen (sofern sie das auch wirklich tun), die Frage ist allerdings, für wie lange das gilt.

Tatsächlich steht MV3 seit 2021 zur Verfügung und für diese Schnittstelle gibt es auch uBlock Origin Lite, wie auch viele andere Erweiterungen. Wer sich für konkrete Unterschiede zwischen MV2 und MV3 interessiert, sei auf den Artikel Manifest V2 vs Manifest V3 (Chrome Extensions): What Changed, and Why 2025 Was the Turning Point verwiesen.

Ich persönlich empfehle ich die Verwendung von Mozilla Firefox, oder einem Firefox-Derivat.

Las notas de pestañas son un interesante añadido que están desarrollando en Firefox para tener mejor controladas las pestañas que mantenemos abiertas durante largo tiempo. Pulsando el botón derecho tendremos la posibilidad de dejar un «post-it» pegado a esa pestaña donde podemos poner lo que queramos: un recordatorio, algo que queremos hacer allí en el futuro, lo que sea.

De momento es una opción experimental que se debe activar en los Firefox Labs de la sección Ajustes y podría tener algún fallo o incompatibilidad actualmente, pero he comprobado que es completamente funcional.

Aprovecho la ocasión para decir que en esa misma sección también podemos activar un temporizador y una lista de tareas que quedan acoplados en la página de Nueva pestaña.

Well, credit where credit's due: Firefox implemented the AI blocking that many of us were clamoring for. Go into the settings, search for "AI", and scroll all the way to the bottom. The screenshot depicts what my settings were immediately after updating, where I'd previously used about:config to shut off some things using flags.

P.S. Zen Browser is a nice derivative of Firefox that implements much of what I liked about Vivaldi. If you want a more minimalist UI and/or tab tiling, it's worth checking out.
