  1. Where should I file a suggestion for change in KDE Discover?

Based on talks with new Linux users, many of them are confused when they open "Software Center" and are met with multiple "sources" for a single application - from repos, Flatpak, Snap.
I think Discover should include a small ? icon next to the source selector, explaining what specific format is, what are the pros and cons (eg. "This is repo package, it may be outdated if you're using an LTS release").

  2. Less than 2 weeks to P.I.W.O.! This is a great initiative, a community-drivern open-source convention, hosted in Poznan, Poland. Lectures, workshops, and even LAN party!

    piwo.sh

  3. Steam Controller launched, was sold out in less than 2 hours, and now they're all listed on eBay for 3x the price

    FUCK THE SCALPERS

Do the God's work - report scalper listings, as they don't have the product they're selling

  4. A small release - I decided to build an open-source digital photo frame from Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W and my local Immich server.

    codeberg.org/leniwcowaty/PiFra

It even has a 3D printed case!

  5. Okay @kubuntu, I'm impressed.

The stability of LTS (locked package versions in between releases), nears stock and unmodified KDE Plasma 6, releases every 6 months on the dot...

And all of this without forcing user to Snap packages!

I think I found my Wayland daily driver. If only Calamares didn't crash when trying to manually partition LVM... But that's a bug in Calamares since like 2016, so unlikely to be fixed.

  6. I may be stupid but...
Can someone explain to me, what's the reasoning behind Reddit sending EVERY KEYSTROKE in a comment as a separate API POST request, instead of waiting until you clikc "Send" and send the whole text at once?
This approach results in 200 ms input lag when typing, which is super annoying and distracting

  7. Okay, I heard that runit init system is pretty fast. But was not ready for it...

Void Linux + Sway + TUIGreet. From decrypting LUKS to login screen (according to dmesg) - 0.8 seconds.
From pushing the button to login screen (excluding GRUB menu and typing in LUKS password) - just about 7 seconds.

    Wild. Just wild.

  8. So I've been looking for an alternative for to host on my server. Very minimal requirements - only file storage, support, integration (need mobile editor, and not going to pay OnlyOffice a single penny).
was closest, but (for now) it only supports OnlyOffice. Was also impressed by , but the UI is very clunky and did not get "wife approval mark"

Finally landed on @sync_in. Fits all my needs perfectly!

  9. No idea what's this about, but my dog looks like a very disappointed CEO, that is going to announce this quarter earnings report :D

  10. Quick question:

I'm building a tiny, lightweight service monitoring solution. Currently it's set up using SQLite. Should I make it compatible with some TSDB, like InfluxDB?

  11. Hmm I'm at a crossroads...

I self-host my Matrix instance, have some encrypted rooms there, chat with people from other instances. Works fine.

But Hetzner just raised the prices, and my backups are getting bigger and bigger. It's now 8 Euro / month, and if the backups keep growing at this rate, by the end of the year it could be 10-12 Euro / month.

What do I do... Suck it up, or just switch to public instance...

    Difficult choices...

  12. My first REAL project release :D

Hyper specific, only for Polish people. Python program to grab PM10 and NO2 data from your local air quality station via GIOŚ API and notify you through Ntfy if their concentration is higher than the limit recommended by GIOŚ (or set by you).

It even has a binary release!

    github.com/Leniwcowaty/giosifi

  13. That's it.

Cancelled my Nitro subscription (bye bye paying $4, because they never raised prices for already subscribed), and moved all the people I was still talking to there to Matrix.

Now Discord is only for non-private stuff, like official game servers and FOSS projects servers, basically as support hotline.

All my personal, private talks are now on E2EE channels - Matrix for friends, Messenger for family.

    Free at last

  14. Not me just successfully migrated my PC from BTRFS to LVM just to see if I can...

  15. I distincly remember a few years back saying (as user) that brings nothing new to the world, it's old and , and shouldn't even exist in the first place. After all, who would want to use an distro with old packages and out-of-date version of ?

Few years passed and now both my and my main are running Debian, and I'm asking my employer to allow me to replace 11 with Debian

    How the turns have tabled...

  16. Just filed my first "real" merge proposal for major project.
It's only a few lines of Python to enable striped LVs in Ubuntu Curtin installer. Probably made 10 mistakes in 5 lines, as it was a good while since I wrote anything in Python 🤦‍♂️
But hey, at least I try to be the change I want to see!

  17. It's bizzare to me, that the curtin installer, which is designed by @ubuntu to automate server and desktop installs doesn't allow me to configure striped LVM. I even found where in the code it could be added:

    git.launchpad.net/curtin/tree/

    Line 1572, lvm_partition_handler, add if info.get('stripes') and cmd.extend(["--stripes", stripes])

(of course this would need a change in info to get a "stripes" key from YAML, but this shouldn't be too hard)

  18. 1/2
Mod taken down by CD Project Red DMCA!

Or rather by huge of the author

The guy made a to convert normal game into VR. This framework is universal, but needs specific patches and configs for each supported game, that modify and interact with game files.

It's being held behind monthly subscribtion.

CDPR doesn't allow mods to be paid, so they suggested he makes the CP77 configs free with optional .

    He refused, so they filed

  19. My company has been avoiding questions about extending my contract for a month now (the contract ends at the end of February), and yesterday posted job listings for my position...

I guess I'm looking for a new job now...? Anyone looking for a sysadmin with 4.5 years of experience?

  20. Well, giving GrapheneOS another go.

My biggest problem with it - contactless NFC payments - is resolved thanks to great Polish invention. Contactless Blik payments are fully operational on GrapheneOS!

  21. Alright users - is it feasible to use GNOME 100% stock? No , no , no modifications. Just a stock GNOME that ships with , or . Share your experiences and share this post!

  22. The team behind the revival project of Concord (Sony's flopped hero shooter, that was shut down 12 days after release) after months of work managed to get the game running on private servers. They posted this achievement on Youtube...

And then were DMCA-d to oblivion by Sony.

Moreover, signups to alpha tests were halted due to "concerning legal movements of the IP holders".

Sony - very kindy, FUCK OFF

  23. I love my LMDE 7, I truly do. I finally get why people love Debian so much.

Kinda tempts me to install clean Debian...

    Should I...?

  24. I've installed 7 on my laptop and I must say... Now I'm tempted to switch from 22.2 to LMDE 7 on my main rig, once it releases. It's basically Debian Stable but with Cinnamon instead of GNOME. Which is juuuust fine by me!

  25. Okay, this would actually be pretty , if it wasn't .

I installed @GrapheneOS on my 8. All runs good, installed sandboxed Play Services. All my 4 banking apps work good, my government app for my ID and driver's license works as expected.

There's one app that refuses to work - app. For some God forsaken reason, MCD app has stronger and higher requirements than basically any or application.

    This is hilarious...

  26. Quote by @thelinuxEXP from today's Mint 22.2 review:
"Pretty clever, really useful, nice, little graphical tool, it's the Mint way basically"

    I don't think there's a better sentence, describing @linuxmint

  27. Some time ago, when we were working together @NasaGuy had to time how long it takes to install, setup and update a fresh 11 installation, plus install basic set of for new employee. Remind me, was it like 2 hours? Closer to 3?

I just timed how long it took me from cold boot to have fully set up and usable (including wallpaper) installation.

    38 minutes.

    THIRTY EIGHT MINUTES!

  28. A friend of mine asked me to something for her. I warned her, it may be , remembering how years ago I probed my and it was sucking up like 350 W during printing, and this would be a 4 hour print.
Turns out, 3D printers came a long way. Now my A1 Mini is literally sipping just over 60 W. Still not insignifficant, but a huge improvement, compared to Anet.

  29. Family trip to ! Go go McLaren, Ferrari and Aston Martin! Just awesome time with awesome people!

(from left to right - my mum, brother, wife, dad and me)

  30. Reportedly banned a user who bought several second-hand games and ran them on his . Reason for the ban? Nintendo found out, that these particular were ripped/dumped by the previous owner.

The guy was eventually unbanned after proving to Nintendo that he had bought the carts off Marketplace and was not the one who ripped them.

My question is - HOW did Nintendo know, these carts were dumped/ripped? Is every cart individually traceable...?

  31. Hot take:

This whole drama around and , Ross' response, all the videos covering this, all the talk that SKG is dead... It actually helped the initiative.

If I remember correctly, when this all started last week, the petition was at around 500k, maybe a bit less. Now it's gathering THOUSANDS of signatures per hour. @ordinarygamers uploaded a video 12 hours ago, showing 695k, now it's at 800k.

We might actually do this guys!

  32. It's funny how can lag behind in releasing stable version and release an untested -firmware, that has the potential of damaging your GPU IN THE SAME WEEK!

Once again, Arch users being testers of the world, while boldly proclaiming, that Arch doesn't break.

Thank you for your duty, soldiers! 🫡

  33. star of sentenced to 14 years behind bars for international drug trafficking!

    What gave her away?
Well, apparently reported her search history, including phrases like "50 kg of cocaine UK news" and "which countries employ death penalty for drug trafficking" to UK law enforcement.

    It's both funny and concerning...

  34. "Throw the squeaky toy already!"

    (I think I'm turning into a dog daddy 🤣)

  35. What's great about for is even if a doesn't support save , you can just... do it yourself!
`%command% ; /path/to/script.sh` will run a script every time the game closes, no matter if closed or crashed.
For me the script rsyncs the save to my , and once a week the saves are zipped and sent to my , with ones older than 2 weeks moving automatically to .
    How cool is that?!

  36. We need a "WRAP IT THE FUCK UP" button in ...

Our "quick" Backlog Refinement meeting is 32 minutes now, since ONE guy CANNOT be quick and concise with his tasks. He just finished yapping about one of 6 of his tasks.

Last week when he wasn't around we wrapped the meeting (6 people) in 9 minutes. But apart from that one time we never managed to finish it in under 2 hours. All thanks to ONE yapper.

  37. I hate my ...

"As a measure" when you , instead of typing it the whole , you have to type in 8 characters from it, like 1st, 4th, 10th etc.

What does this against? Your user being able to log in? Every time I have to open a and type out my password, count the characters, and type them in one by one, instead of JUST USING A PASSWORD .

If an knows your password... WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES THIS MAKE?!

  38. After 1.5 years my 8 experienced the famous "purple strip" issue...

Good thing is, that acknowledges the and offers a 3 years for one free display replacement.

Bad thing is, I need to switch to my for 2 weeks...

  39. Yeah, so it looks like that's the case. My have one USB 2 controller and two 3 ones (one connected to and one directly connected to to enable high speed USB-C).
The was connected to the CPU one, and on every port the USB has some weird issues with spikes. When switched to USB 2.0 the ping issues go away but the speed is 250 Mbps. Connecting to the other controller's USB 3.2 I have full speed and no ping issues.

    I guess...

  40. WE DID IT!

Bazzite 42 + TP-Link USB Ethernet NIC + static IP + connecting my DAC/AMP with USB 2.0 + installing on internal SSD instead of external + disabling XHCI Hand-off solved all my issues with Linux on PC.

Time to finally go home... Home sweet home Linux...

Only issue that persists, but I suspect just an application bug - launching Steam freezes my Plasma for 3-5 seconds.

  41. I give up.
Apparently there's some bug in driver that affects in some certain conditions and causes it to hang a process, not caring about a process. A pull request intending to fix this is open for more than a year, and it doesn't seem to be moving at all. So no for my .

So sadly, back to ... At least I have on my (which tbh feels a lot like and I'm unsure how I feel about it)...

  42. As it turns out, doesn't have any options available during first setup. No Magnifier, no Screen Keyboard, nothing. You also cannot connect any accessory during the initial setup.
So now my parents are stuck with Mini serving as a paperweight until they get a USB-C hub, cuz they didn't realize you cannot connect your Bluetooth keyboard to Mac during initial setup.
    What year is it? 1999?

  43. Fun from last night:
Spending 4 hours trying to come up with a way to install on without layering packages.
I ended up installing from , using rustup to setup and then using cargo to install Alacritty. And I had to make .desktop file myself.
Only caveat - no way to include updating cargo and crates in "ujust update" (or I'm not smart enough). So after updating I have to manually run "rustup update" and "cargo install alacritty"

  44. Soooo...
No Global Menu for on ? Too bad... Really, really shame.
Or maybe there is some hack I can do? Currently using on

  45. Hmmm, for some weeks now I had problems with - on every , every . With my inbuilt 2.5 Gig NIC the connection would just drop. On 2.5 Gig I226-V the ping response times would spike to 100-200 ms, which made it unusable (and in caused the DE to become unresponsive).
Switched to old 1 Gig Intel 82571, and it would set itself to 100 Mbps. I changed cable from Cat 5e UTP to Cat 6 FTP and it jumped to 1 Gig.
    Was the the all along...?

  46. So I was bored today, and decided to try and learn a bit more about , and all of that stuff.

    The result is allmbox - a Podman + script to a 24.04 a distrobox with fully set up .2 (running on ) and , to have a locally-run !

    Wasn't too difficult!
