Software RAID: Setup, Management, and Administration
Below is a full, detailed, production-ready guide for Software #RAID Setup, Management, Monitoring, and Drive-Failure Recovery.
What is Software RAID?
Software RAID is a method of combining multiple physical drives into a single logical unit using the operating system (not a dedicated hardware controller). It’s commonly implemented with tools like #mdadm on Linux.

HDD RAID array slow to wake up after upgrading from Debian 10 to 13
I've been running a home server with a RAID 6 array of SATA hard drives plugged into an SAS HBA for many years, but when I upgraded the OS from Debian 10 to 13, it started taking a very long time to wake up after it's been sitting for a while. This sounds a lot like the drives were spun down, but they weren't spinning down previously because I had a script with these commands in it run at boot…
-
Thought I was real clever, building a 4x16TB #zfs array for our server, umm... guess it was a good six years ago now. They cost CDN$400 round then. Think of the hydro, I said!
Today, I'm pulling the old 6x4TB that that array replaced, pruning what data I can from the currently-degraded 16TB array in order to transfer it over, and then rebuilding it as a 3-drive zpool for non-critical data, cause holy shit we cannot afford 16TB drives right now. I might even just use em as straight 16TB drives, why even bother with the pretense that I could replace one...
(I know that the math adds up the same when replacing hard drives, TB for TB, but we can handle the failure of a 4TB drive as an unanticipated money hit. A 16TB drive, that's been elevated to "tax time luxury purchase" costs)
edit: By the way, folks: #NAS drives are not bullshit. If you are doing any sort of #RAID storage, spend the extra hundred+ on the NAS version of whatever drive you are buying.
My supporting anecdote: Buying the drives was a hit, even in the pre-dystopic era, so I bought one non-NAS as the hotspare, figuring that my IT-grade salary would not vaporize and I could replace with real NAS drives as the inevitable failures happen. Back at Tangent I managed a whole rack of big 'ol FreeNAS servers, and I was hunting down blown ones on the regular.
At some point, a drive did fail, and the hotspare went in and never got replaced with a NAS drive, cause we've been mostly broke since shortly after I built this array, and we have country power. And then it failed, and I could only afford another non-NAS drive. And now it, too, has failed, where probably if I had just cried a little harder and replaced the original NAS drive with its like, I would still have the hotspare as well.
Buy NAS drives for your NAS utilities, kids. I wonder if there's a :themoreyouknow: emoji with the swirly rainbow.
