a hand full of you might have run into some iteration of this at this point: the little gateway that guards some of the tchncs.de register endpoints.

here is the current, updated state (simplified):
- manual approval based on join reason and social identity proof (like a code in your bio)
- saving both parties some time with a small payment
- invite codes

invites and payments are allowed for skipping the approval queue and can still be used if the request was declined (many requests are very generic, its tough)

two things just happened/got noticed on the host running mastodon:

- out of memory .. the new host was an accidental downgrade to just 64G but until today it was sufficient
- one of the two nvmes is dead ... just gone from the system... amazing.

so for now i will try to tweak the setup for the lower available memory and announce maintenance later on so the hoster may replace that dead drive.

Wo sind denn die "normalen" Emojis im Web-Interface hin? Liegt das am Update auf Mastodon 4.6?

Normalerweise kommt als Vorschlag z.B. das Kaffee-Emoji, wenn ich :coff tippe.

@video_play Habe ich mich gerade mal dazugesellt. Name: angMOR. Ich weiß das Discord recht einfach ist, würde aber auch eher Matrix bevorzugen. Du hast ja schon einen Link zu #tchncs bekommen, habe da auch einen Account und bin sehr zufrieden.

i am relieved to say that #tchncs now has a pretty cool registration gateway that no longer depends on webserver scripting. it can do the following:

- block based on ip lists
- block based on email domain lists
- PoW
- honeypods
- (timed) join reason form
- approval (specific email domains or all)
- mod links via webview list
- mod links directly from webhook based messages in our chatrooms
- remember and block pending/denied actors
- email notify if approved

(actually pow+honeypod+timing appears to be pretty much useless against common bots)

the latest state of this thing is currently being rolled out where needed.

if you are in need for such a thing, reach out. (its actually a public repo anyway ..but very much vibecoded)

adding to the list of seriously risky things with worn out nvme drives:

reboot can have them die both (known)

...zfs snapshots can cause metadata corruption, not just for snapshots - also getting PCIe Bus Errors for one of them right now but i am not sure right now what came first.
what i know is that host h3 had similar behavior until its bad drive was replaced which cant be a coincidence!

anyhow, host h4 with Mastodon and Gitlab eventually stalled.

ideally maybe use a different browser with https://chat.tchncs.de for this test in case something goes wrong.

i am currently trying a migration of the sso service from zitadel to keycloak. my user is recognized as expected but it would be nice to know that its fine for others too. :)

oh and of course you need to perform a password reset. 😇

nochmal ganz doof frei rausgefragt weil ich gedanklich ein bisschen in einer sackgasse stehe und inspiration/meinungsbild super wäre:

ich so als typ von und mit #tchncs... so von der weiterentwicklung von angeboten her, was würde für euch logisch und auch tatsächlich interessant sein?

- beratungsangebote?
- doch echt software as a service (ne eigene cloud klicken)?
- allgemeine individuelle serverbetreuung? (das ist ne falle, das ist entweder nicht so viel gefragt oder ich habe es schlecht kommuniziert, aber das mache ich schon)
- ganz riskant: (wirklich) schwer moderierbare tchncs dienste hinter paywall schieben (nachfrage natürlich ok) bzw/und ein "zweites" tchncs mit pay2account modell.. kann geldfluss stabilisieren und spam vorfiltern - falls genutzt

In the web interface of #tchncs .de on #lmde7 with #firefox most of the pictures are greyed out and i have to "click to open" because "preview not available:.
In the #mastodon client on Android all pictures are shown.
Sometimes #noscript comes up with a media warning in the new tab if I click to open.
Is there a way/setting to fix the web interface ?

Hmm I'm at a crossroads...

I self-host my Matrix instance, have some encrypted rooms there, chat with people from other instances. Works fine.

But Hetzner just raised the prices, and my backups are getting bigger and bigger. It's now 8 Euro / month, and if the backups keep growing at this rate, by the end of the year it could be 10-12 Euro / month.

What do I do... Suck it up, or just switch to public instance...

Difficult choices...
