  2. So, just finished this month's Repair Cafe in #Regina.

There's a depressing pattern where small #appliances, typically #kitchen stuff, fail after just a year or so. The warranties are invariably one year. Nobody, especially the manufacturer, offers service - "Just buy a new one, it's cheaper" is the refrain. Of course, we're trying to "reduce, re-use, recycle" and keep this stuff out of the #landfill.

Even trying to service them is a pain, and sometimes impossible. The cases/shells of modern stuff are frequently absolute b*stards to take apart, and really new stuff now features "one-way clips" - there's literally no way to unclip the shell after it's been clicked together at the factory. You can't access the latching bit, so you have to force it and break the #clip, and then #bodge it back together somehow.

Mandating a longer #warranty, like in the EU - two years, three? - would help, because stuff would have to be designed better.

The two most frustrating from today:

    1) A Keurig coffee maker, used twice, a year old. Got it apart, it had leaked water onto the back of the (massively #overcomplicated) CPU board, and shorted it out. Poof, magic smoke gone, tears in the rain, time to die, etc. Who puts the CPU directly under a join in the #water pipe?

    2) A gas-powered leaf blower. Fuel line rotted, but to be able to feed new one through from the carburetor to the fuel tank, you have to take the shell apart - which requires disassembling the engine!

  8. Never buy #ADATA / #XPG products. They suffer from #componentlottery issues, meaning they will switch components mid production if something cheaper or more convenient comes up. When your #NVMe #SSD eventually breaks down, the replacement under #warranty process is a fucking nightmare.

To compare, my NAS is using #Toshiba HDDs, and when one of them died, I quickly filed a replacement request with Toshiba, giving them the serial number of the disk and some SMART diagnostics. A shipping label was issued, and the thing was sent. Replacement arrived some weeks later.

ADATA on the other hand requires a tedious registration process, actual proof of purchase and payment for shipping to #Taiwan. This process ends abruptly, since I can't seem to find any proof of purchase anywhere. In short, the remaining 3 years warranty is fucking useless, because I forgot where I bought it.

    Fuck you, ADATA.

    Never buying your shit again.

PS: Backup, people. It's a thing.

  10. incredible...

fortunately, it's part of a #RAID, the important stuff is also backed up off-site, and I've even tested those backups somewhat recently.

  11. Having invested in some really good pliers for electronic work, I was shocked the tip snapped off while cutting the leg of a defect triac. I sent an email to the Lindström company and got a free replacement for the 8145 model. They also asked for the return of the broken one for quality inspection. Great #customer #service #warranty!

  14. @drdrang @siracusa Call it , but a friend shared his with a 1 y/o Air. The failed mid-video edit, so he went to the in . At the , the tech said (paraphrased): “If you came yesterday, your would cover it. Today it’s $700. Better to buy a new one.”

Hard to square with all those stories of happy who were when the company went the extra mile to keep them

  16. I get the impression that these people don't want anyone trying to take advantage of their "one year warranty".

    Required steps:

    • call/write to them
    • return the failed fixture
    • with cash register receipt (hard for an online purchase)
    • and the barcode from the box (that was already trashed)

  17. My cooker is a hoover

the clock is invisible, as it hid
    beneath the façade one day
    and never came out again

time is always broken on my hoover (which is a cooker)
I used to fix it quite a lot.
I suppose that is because I am
    a doctor who fan.

Today is four years to the day
    since the warranty ran out
mr hoover even emailed me to say.
I would bake it a cake
but I don't think it would be a surprise.

  18. I recommend not to buy #Sony products.

My expensive ($300+) #earbuds had their battery completely dead just 2 years and 2 months after purchasing them. Given the very modest usage (about 3h per week), it is obvious that this is a faulty unit. Particularly when there are plenty of online reports from people suffering the same issue in this particular model.

Sony has refused to fix them arguing that the #warranty is expired. This is basically a lie in #Australia, where manufacturer warranties are only a voluntary indication by the manufacturer and not exclusive of their responsibility. But my only recourse would be to take them to court.

Instead, they want to charge me $170 plus parts to repair them.

    Fuck Sony!

  19. @Bot4Sale

I went to charge my iPad mini earlier.

It now won’t take a charge.

It’s still under #warranty, so I guess I’ll just send it off to #Apple.

I’m now back on my heavier Pro 11” - I really appreciate how light the mini’s are.

  20. After 1.5 years my 8 experienced the famous "purple strip" issue...

Good thing is, that acknowledges the and offers a 3 years for one free display replacement.

Bad thing is, I need to switch to my for 2 weeks...
