One of the big drawbacks of buying a #Macbook instead of a #Thinkpad/#Framework laptop is that if a key breaks on your laptop you are kinda screwed or rather you are looking at a rather huge bill.
So this is the punishment for being too lazy to maintain #Linux and opting for #OSX.
At any rate now using an external keyboard and when that isn't practical #Karabiner to the rescue using the "fn" key as modifier to double up some still working keys.

Solve Ubuntu 24.04 Kernel Panic on a Macbook Air

A while ago my father brought me his 12 year old Macbook Air which i installed with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Budgie because MacOS was not supported anymore. Even after twelve years and with a bended case (dont know if my father of one of his grandchildren had sit in it) it yust works. Even the battery is in decent condition, compared to my Lenovo L14 which already has its third battery in 5.5 years. Ubuntu Budgie also feature a nice MacOS like gui, so it was quickly installed.
Now i have that Laptop in front of me and all i see after turning it on is an Ascii Tux on purple background and the message: „Kernel Panic! VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)“ – yeah great.
So i asked ecosia, my search engine of choice, because i didnt had that problem before. According to some reports i need to enter the grub menu because something might have gone wrong generating the Initramfs. But how to enter that menu on a Macbook, took me some tries to figure it out. Turn of the Laptop (long pres on the Powert Button), hold ESC, start the Laptop. Now you need good timing. You hold ESC too short you run into the Kernel Panic, press it too long and the grub menu disappears. The sweetspot seems to be short befor the End of the Apple chime.
Now you can try to use a working Kernel version, the newest one is that one which is corrupted.
So i am in the OS right now, so at least it is not completely messed up. I try an apt update and apt upgrate and i am greeted with debug messages that Initramfs can not be generated. Reboot would no be a great idea right now.
Quick fix would be to uninstall the newest Kernel. I digged a bit deeper, my Problem was the broadcom-sta.dkms module which i need for the Macbooks wifi card. Those DKMS binary modules regulary break when i new kernel is released. But what really bothers me: why does Ubuntu Budgie make a Kernel the Grub default if the generation of the Initramfs fails? Thats Bullshit!
The solution was in quickly found on Kuan-Yi Li’s Blog. Manually download the DKMS Modul package and install it. After that run apt upgrade and you are goot to go.
cd /tmp wget https://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/b/broadcom-sta/broadcom-sta-dkms_6.30.223.271-29ubuntu1_amd64.deb sudo apt install ./broadcom-sta-dkms_6.30.223.271-29ubuntu1_amd64.debNow you can reboot the Laptop and everything should work as expected. But do yourself a favour. Use apt-mark hold $(uname -r) as well as apt-mark hold linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic to prevent Kernel updates. Also hold the broadcom-sta-dkms package, hopefully this solves the problem. Yes this solution is not ideal, but better than to troubleshoot after every automatic Kernel update.
But really: these are the moment that mal clear that Linux really is not for everyone when a Kernel upgrade failes, but still is added to grub preventing the system from starting.

Last day of my 3-week vacation. Tomorrow it’s back to the salt mines. Task No1, onboard onto a new corporate laptop, (no, not a #macbook) with Windows 11.
Wonder how many things will need to be tweaked, installed, and customized before I can do some actual work? 3h give or take?
Also, 3 new monitors arrived. No, not 4K. No, not 2K. 1080p/24”. Coz why not it’s only 2026 😂. Developers can have their 2560x1440 screens, OPS crew in the basement is rocking 1080 like it’s 2000.

So, dank einigen Tipps von @rompe, @Kaffee_Junkie42 und @HLunke habe ich nun meine Sicherungs- und Wiederherstellungsübung von #Immich erfolgreich beendet.
Ausgangslage: Eine Immich installation in einem #Docker Container auf dem #NAS im lokalen Netzwerk
Ziel: Ein gespiegeltes Immich ebenfalls im Docker Container auf dem #MacBook
Vorgehensweise:
1. Anlegen eines Docker Containers in einem leeren Verzeichnis auf dem Macbook unter Zuhilfenahme der Compose Datei vom NAS
2. Spiegeln des library Verzeichnisses vom NAS auf das MacBook mit rsync. Zuerst habe ich das mit einem rsync und einer SMB Freigabe probiert. Das dauert aber bei über 350.000 Dateien zu lang. Dann habe ich es so gemacht, dass das rsync vom MacBook direkt mit dem rsyncd vom NAS "spricht", dann ging es deutlich schneller. 3. Starten der Wiederherstellung in Immich aus dem Backup einer Datenbank. Das ist wichtig, da nur das konsistent ist. Das postgres Verzeichnis ebenfalls mit rsync zu synchronisieren führt ggf. zu Inkonsistenzen und vielleicht anschließend zu einer korrupten Datenbank. Und das will man ja schließlich nicht, reicht ja, wenn wir korrupte Politiker haben 😉 -

That sounds of me screaming into the void? My #MacBook Pro just decided to randomly reboot again (WindowsServer issue, again) and decide to corrupt/mangle keychain and so Office, Vivaldi, etc all no longer load their profiles or accounts. One reason I have been fiercely loyal to #Apple and #macOS in the past is the reliability and robustness of the OS but the last couple of years it feels they just don't care any more. Just in time for me to be considering a hardware refresh...

Ich mache immer schön artig eine #Immich Datensicherung, u.A. synchronisiere ich immer das Bilderverzeichnis aus Immich auf mein #MacBook und gucke dann da mit #DigiKam mal rein (hab ich vor Immich benutzt). Etwas Sorge bereitet mir das #Backup der Immich #Datenbank, weil ich nicht weiß, wie ich das auf Korrektheit prüfen kann. Und wir haben ja gerade gelernt, was passiert, wenn man alles sichert bis auf die Datenbank. ( #anoxinon )

I'm currently testing a few #LLM #MLX runtimes/apps on my #M5 Pro 24 GB. So far, I can't say which one gets the best performance out of a local LLM like #Gemma 4 12B.
I've tested #Ollama, #LMStudio, #oMlx, and #osaurus. Each one has its own 1-2 tweaks that are supposed to squeeze out more performance.What's your experience been like?
