It is finally done! That was the longest week ever as I waited for my RAID to rebuild after a drive needed to be reseated. I wish my cheap ass storage array advertised how long it takes rebuild. Knowing that I was one drive failure away from having to recreate all my home lab services was awful.
For the record, I was seeing between 1 and 7MB/sec on the checksum calculations (is that what the RAID is doing?) on a 4TB drive. So if it averaged 4MB/sec, that's 11.5 days.

It's been some time since I needed to connect my old NAS device with a TTL-232R-3V3 cable to use with a serial terminal. I tried hard to find what order the wires were, but then remembered I had posted to debian-arm myself and found my own photos from 2018! Success! The terminal which is partly shown is indeed coming from the wires.

I'm trying to debug malloc failures that started on March 9th 5am for no apparent reason, after 5 hourly process restart.

PSA to any Homelab users of the #qnap QSW-2104-2S switch. Don’t present a MAC address directly on one port, which is also on a downstream port. That way only watchdog resets lie. I’ll take part of the blame here too.

finalizing the RAID expansion of my 'archive' TS-439 NAS, it has been taking ages (well, days) and needs replacing, it's so sloooow

I checked and it has been serving me well since 2009, that's 17 effing years!. It was my second test machine I received as #QNAP betatester

Synology and QNAP seem to be well-respected and trustworthy companies. As such, there's no particular reason to distrust their products. However, what would happen if PRC decides to invade Taiwan or cut their undersea internet connectivity? Would the devices you've bought from them still work?

Synology and QNAP are probably the most well-known manufacturers of NAS ("Network Attached Storage") systems. Both have headquarters in Taiwan. Mapping the supply chains of their products would be very difficult without having insider access. It is, however, fairly safe to say that most of the components in their devices come from China, Taiwan or other countries in the far east. This means that there's a high level of geopolitical risk in play here.
