  1. So, just finished this month's Repair Cafe in #Regina.

There's a depressing pattern where small #appliances, typically #kitchen stuff, fail after just a year or so. The warranties are invariably one year. Nobody, especially the manufacturer, offers service - "Just buy a new one, it's cheaper" is the refrain. Of course, we're trying to "reduce, re-use, recycle" and keep this stuff out of the #landfill.

Even trying to service them is a pain, and sometimes impossible. The cases/shells of modern stuff are frequently absolute b*stards to take apart, and really new stuff now features "one-way clips" - there's literally no way to unclip the shell after it's been clicked together at the factory. You can't access the latching bit, so you have to force it and break the #clip, and then #bodge it back together somehow.

Mandating a longer #warranty, like in the EU - two years, three? - would help, because stuff would have to be designed better.

The two most frustrating from today:

    1) A Keurig coffee maker, used twice, a year old. Got it apart, it had leaked water onto the back of the (massively #overcomplicated) CPU board, and shorted it out. Poof, magic smoke gone, tears in the rain, time to die, etc. Who puts the CPU directly under a join in the #water pipe?

    2) A gas-powered leaf blower. Fuel line rotted, but to be able to feed new one through from the carburetor to the fuel tank, you have to take the shell apart - which requires disassembling the engine!

  6. Freezer draw update.

2 part Apoxie has been applied - detailed investigation of cracks showed that liquid Expoy wasn't gonna cut it and would be a major PITA to apply.

Now just gotta leave it alone for 3 days to fully cure and see how it does.

If it doesn't cure and hold fast, or does cure but then doesn't fare well under freezer temps, I'll have to just go buy the expensive replacement part.

    Fingers crossed ! 🤞🏾😒

    Thanks for your help everyone.

  7. To anyone who wants to bring their why2025 badge to 39c3, don't forget to bring your antenna. If you don't have yours anymore, I am bringing a few kits with an antenna and connector (thanks to @a51c ).

I have 7 of them with a half-decent antenna for €6, and 2 of them with a the original badge antenna for €3.

The LoRa module on the badge also requires two bodge wires to be soldered. Two pieces of wire and instructions are included in the kits.

On some badges it may be required to remove some epoxy around one of the battery holders, and even if it isn't, it may make soldering the bodge wires easier. You may also want to make your badge safer and more compact by removing the battery holders entirely.

I am also bringing some epoxy removal kits for free (they're just alcohol wipes and disposable vinyl gloves).

  8. LOL, whoever did this was even worse than our previous guy.

But not far off. Typical old farm hammer 😬

  9. I needed some wire because of LED lighting.

LED light bulbs are great, but they're heavier than the old incandescent ones. So my cheap knock-off desk lamp kept sagging from the weight.

I *could* find a new set of springs with a larger spring constant. But an easier fix is to restrict part of each spring, effectively making them shorter, and resisting a larger weight. Works fine!

  10. What annoys me most about this situation is that I know I have a box of small heat sinks around here ... somewhere. But, this will do for now.

I need to do some work on our roof, but I’ve damaged my shoulder so it’ll have to wait.

  13. Come to where the flavor is. Come, to Bodgetown.
I couldn’t trim this supply to 5V, even after changing out all the caps. I ended up just bodging in a resistor in parallel on the trimmer voltage divider circuit. It takes the voltage after the output transistor, and feeds it back into the error amp input on the switching controller.

  15. So I dug around until I found a #current part that exceeds all the #specs of the old one. Of course it's a different size, and a completely #incompatible #pinout, so I'm going to have to #bodge it, but I half-expected that anyway.

Just getting a #datasheet for the old part, to figure out what specs it had to have, was surprisingly #difficult. What is it with some companies thinking the specs for the product they want you to buy are Top Secret?

  19. Why, that looks like unpopulated battery backup or ultracap pads, along with a 0-ohm jumper resistor!

I think I need to go rummaging for a cr2032 holder or go scavenge a SMT diode and find an ultracap after I get the board tested before I start doing surgery on it.

(rectangle is the battery/ultracap mount/pads, oval is the jumper and missing components to enable the battery backup for the LEA-8T.)
