@jannem @Edent Interestingly enough, these languages originates from Ken Iverson's work on a notation for expression algorithms. This language (called APL) was not initially intended to be used on a computer, but for communication. This made it naturally terse, using symbols rather than words, because it was optimised for a blackboard rather than a terminal.
He invented some new notation that is used in maths today, including the symbols for floor and ceiling.
These days, I believe APL and its descendants (including Kap and BQN and others) are the only languages that actually use some variation of these symbols for the floor and ceil operations (in these languages, the symbols

aby 2 and round down looks like this:⌊a÷2One thing Kap does which the other array languages do not is to allow the user to define functions, operators and even new syntax using glyphs that are not used by the language. Some functions in the language are defined in the standard library, and uses this technique.

Our profession is deeply human: intuitive, empathetic, sensing between the words, things the speaker cannot see themself.
That's what my clients value in our work. Oh and also, the courage to challenge them, to call clients on the out-of-date or untrue stories they tell themselves. No "agreeable" chatbot gives them that.

There's also another subfield in AI called Automated Reasoning and Automated Theorem Proving, used to proof the correctness of software:

@jannem actually, you are in GREAT danger. At present there are approximately zero #ubuntu desktops that will work now on my old laptop, and I discover #Emacs in a console has no access to saved passwords 😔
On the broken laptop (no kbd) the upgrade was flawless although #Ovos no longer functions, Apache needed fpm fixes and I had to reinstall whisper.

Mastodon is also organized in a way that accommodates public discussion of niche topics (through subscribing to hashtags or curated content). There is community #moderation in each instance, and different content policies. Mastodon allows posts with images and videos (and even alt text). Mastodon allows bots, editing posts, third party apps, saving content, etc. These are many of the features that reddit users are concerned about losing.
However, mastodon has no ranking system or algorithm. It is just you and your timeline. Likewise, there is no karma or emphasis on #virality - it is just direct community responses around a topic. Conversations are not infinitely threaded, but rather more focused on a single discussion, and not everything is searchable.
Some communities will thrive here but you are right it is not a forum.

@jannem I see your point but the fact that this is happening means people need to be warned against it happening / doing it. Maybe that warning is “don’t light money on fire”, but we live in a society where cotton swabs include a warning not to use them for their most popular use.
