IKEA is owned by a charity. Sort of.

Every IKEA store pays a 3% franchise fee on net sales to use the IKEA brand name. That's $3M on a $100M store -- gone before local taxes are calculated. The fee goes to Inter IKEA Systems in the Netherlands, which historically funneled it to the Interogo Foundation, a secretive entity in Liechtenstein controlled by the Kamprad family.

Nobody knew Interogo existed until Swedish investigative journalists exposed it in 2011. It had been hiding in plain sight since 1989. Meanwhile, the INGKA Foundation (a Dutch non-profit) technically owns most IKEA stores. Kamprad gave away the stores in 1982. His family kept the branding.

The result: billions in profits flowing through a maze of foundations and holding companies across the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. All of it legal.

Bought an office chair from IKEA (yeah, I know…). Inevitably, it was faulty. So had to repack it ready to be collected. Thought we’d have problems fitting it back in the box. Had the genius idea* of finding a YT unboxing and assembly video and watching that to find out how to get the thing in the box. Perfection.
