FINALLY succeeded in getting an Ethernet-adapter emulated in my PDP-11/70 emulator. With NAT (port-)forwarding it runs a tiny http-server connected to the internet. Reachable via http://188.212.113.203:8080/
Note that it is not very stable yet so it may become unreachable suddenly. No https or ip6 as the whole http-server should fit in less than 56 kB of RAM.

Occasionally I work on my PDP11/70 emulator (toy-project, in my spare time). The latest version can run BSD 2.11 multi-user on an ESP32-S3. Even though I wrote the emulator myself, I'm still amazed about the physical reduction in size. On the left in the picture below you see the original device (the thing in the 19" rack with all the lights and switches), on the right you see the ESP32: smaller than my hand!

Spent some time this monday preparing the machine including installing 2.11BSD to the M2322 hard drive, as my DIY disk emulator showed some reliability issues at #why2025 . I'm still in the process of applying the latest updates to the system, as rebuilding kernels and part of the userland on a 1MB RAM, less than 1 MIPS system takes a fair bit of time.

Once I'm done updating the system, it will be at patch level 499 - the latest available for #211bsd , released on January 14th 2026!

I will be attaching a few physical terminals to it (including a VT55 and VT100!) as well as allowing telnet from the local network.

Last year, I drew a map of the ARPANET for an event featuring retro and vintage computing. It is based on various previously published maps from 1981, but has been redrawn using a vector graphics software. In addition, I marked computers with DEC PDP-10, PDP-11, and VAX architecture to show their role in the early Internet (there were PiDPs and some descriptions about them as exhibits). Just got my hands on a DEC PDP-11/150 fresh from the US 🇺🇸 — a glorious addition to the collection at https://hacking.museum !
It’s my first time actually using a PDP-11, even if this one’s from the later generations.

And the best part? It works. Like, actually powers on and runs.
Meanwhile, modern machines panic if you forget a semicolon.
Progress, right?

Yeah, but I think they were mainly used to load software. Think of them as early CD-ROM.
MS BASIC was originally distributed on paper tape. Probably because tape readers are electronically pretty simple machines vs. tape players or especially floppies. They were also (I think??) more standardized than audio tape formats.

The concrete example I know of (again IIRC) was the PDP-11. When it started cold, it was a brick; all it could do is load in bytes from the toggle switches. So you'd code in the tape loader program from memory (i.e. your brain) with the toggles, and then you could load other utilities from paper tape to be able to read mag tapes or whatever else.

1/ Just because, here's my LSI-11 desktop - It works, they used much better capacitors in those days.

Way back when, the LSI-11 was often used to teach people Operating Systems and Compiler Design, and in my CS degree in 1986 we'd fiddle with MINIX on these things, and deal with re-writing different low-level UNIX things. Life was much easier with only 50 instructions to work with.
