  3. So this is still happening. We could see the toxic smoke billowing out from a vantage point on our dog walk today (we are upwind). Raining too which is good for reducing the heat but bad for bringing down particulates.

  4. Trudged down to the recycle centre with the old duvet the doggo's been sleeping on, which was fairly manky. "Goes in your black [landfill] bin, love," they said. This seems like a pretty egregious source of pollution #duvet #recycle #landfill Is there no better plan? It's like the vapes all over the roads because there's no place to recycle them… @greenparty_ie

  5. Chile landfill tops UN global list for methane emissions

A landfill on the outskirts of Santiago, Chile, is one of the world's largest sources of climate-warming methane gas, according to a UN study, which estimated the trash heap produces emissions equivalent to those from nearly 2 million cars driven annually. #News #Reuters #Newsfeed #globalwarming #methane #methanegas #chile #landfill Read the story here: 👉 Subscribe: Keep up with the latest news from around the…

  7. We’re getting something right in #resourcerecovery
Today I loaded up a carload of unwanted household items, car batteries, #ewaste and old paint tins. In half an hour I had offloaded almost all of it at #Vinnies and the local #recycling centre, relishing the space released at home and the knowledge that most of it will be used again. No fee. No mining. No #landfill 😊

  8. So, just finished this month's Repair Cafe in #Regina.

There's a depressing pattern where small #appliances, typically #kitchen stuff, fail after just a year or so. The warranties are invariably one year. Nobody, especially the manufacturer, offers service - "Just buy a new one, it's cheaper" is the refrain. Of course, we're trying to "reduce, re-use, recycle" and keep this stuff out of the #landfill.

Even trying to service them is a pain, and sometimes impossible. The cases/shells of modern stuff are frequently absolute b*stards to take apart, and really new stuff now features "one-way clips" - there's literally no way to unclip the shell after it's been clicked together at the factory. You can't access the latching bit, so you have to force it and break the #clip, and then #bodge it back together somehow.

Mandating a longer #warranty, like in the EU - two years, three? - would help, because stuff would have to be designed better.

The two most frustrating from today:

    1) A Keurig coffee maker, used twice, a year old. Got it apart, it had leaked water onto the back of the (massively #overcomplicated) CPU board, and shorted it out. Poof, magic smoke gone, tears in the rain, time to die, etc. Who puts the CPU directly under a join in the #water pipe?

    2) A gas-powered leaf blower. Fuel line rotted, but to be able to feed new one through from the carburetor to the fuel tank, you have to take the shell apart - which requires disassembling the engine!

  14. 820 pounds of leaves blown from my lawn and hauled to the landfill—amazingly only cost me $17.07 to dump, an amount I probably would’ve spent in heavy duty bags if I’d left it for city pickup—much easier just throwing it all into a trailer!

  15. Live in #Regina? Have something that's #broken and you'd like it fixed? How about getting it fixed for #free?

Regina has a Repair Cafe! It started a year or so ago. I started volunteering when I found out about it. The volunteers are all great people, and between them they seem to fix a lot of stuff - everything from garment #repair to bicycles to power tools to electronics, and more.

I'm not an official spokesman or anything - I just volunteer. But if you're in the #YQR area, you can get the date and location of the next repair cafe from this webpage:

    envirocollective.ca/repair-caf

There's also a link from there to where you can sign up for a repair spot. Walk-ins are taken as possible, but reserved timeslots are served first.

As I write this, the next one is on Saturday 21 March at the Circle Project, 3433 5th Ave. I haven't actually looked where that is yet, must do that.

Anyway - come get stuff fixed for free, by friendly folk in a relaxed atmosphere. And save one more thing from ending up in the #landfill.

  18. PFAS contamination sites and dead platypus
Mapping "hazardous concentrations" of PFAS plumes on NSW waterways

A study "found alarmingly high levels of PFOS in the livers of eight dead platypuses, collected from waterways across NSW."

"…Due to the shape of the valley, groundwater from beneath the landfill "ultimately flows towards the Ourimbah Creek catchment”.

"When you look at some of the research that's coming through, clearly it's raw water, our waterways, that we also need to be concerned about because we know PFAS gets into wildlife."

"The research that I've seen, not just in platypus, but in some other species, is really frightening. If that isn't enough to get the government to act on looking at PFAS in waterways, not just drinking water, then I don't know what is."

Here's an example of misuse of a finite resource by putting it in a #disposable product. It's a lollipop that plays music. This might give an hour of entertainment if that. Then it's straight in the bin.

That's more plastic and metal waste leaching into the #environment which needs to be put to better, longer-term use.

  22. There's apparently not going to be a Repair Cafe in my town this month. I look forward to them, so this is a slight bummer.

To cheer myself up tonight, I spent half an hour replacing the corroded battery spring contacts in a $2 kitchen timer, and cleaned up some crappy wiring and soldering inside it while I was in there. Felt productive. Yes, I could have replaced it for $2 - but I like the feeling I get from keeping it out of the landfill and fulfilling a useful purpose.

Your city may have a Repair Cafe, too.

The chemicals those goods were drenched in – lead, mercury, cadmium, PFAS, PCBs – are seeping slowly out into water, soil and air.
