  1. External HDD (Toshiba DTB440 4 TB) teardown: The enclosure does not contain an ordinary internal drive plus an adapter: the USB connector is on the PCB of the drive itself. The drive itself is 103 mm long (including the protruding connector), 69 mm wide and 14 mm thick (quite a lot).

  9. Anyone here interested in dead physical media formats?

Many probably won't remember but in the mid 2000s, there was the last "Format War" we saw in the Home Video Entertainment business - namely HD DVD from Toshiba vs. Blu-ray from Sony. While the latter succeeded, I began to collect several stuff from the first format and last weekend I was unboxing a BRAND NEW and still SEALED HD DVD Player from 2007. 😍

  15. Never buy #ADATA / #XPG products. They suffer from #componentlottery issues, meaning they will switch components mid production if something cheaper or more convenient comes up. When your #NVMe #SSD eventually breaks down, the replacement under #warranty process is a fucking nightmare.

To compare, my NAS is using #Toshiba HDDs, and when one of them died, I quickly filed a replacement request with Toshiba, giving them the serial number of the disk and some SMART diagnostics. A shipping label was issued, and the thing was sent. Replacement arrived some weeks later.

ADATA on the other hand requires a tedious registration process, actual proof of purchase and payment for shipping to #Taiwan. This process ends abruptly, since I can't seem to find any proof of purchase anywhere. In short, the remaining 3 years warranty is fucking useless, because I forgot where I bought it.

    Fuck you, ADATA.

    Never buying your shit again.

PS: Backup, people. It's a thing.

Also: wer was sieht, bescheid sagen, sonst ist es weg.

  27. RAM? Overpriced and hard to buy.
HHDs? Overpriced and hard to buy.
GPUs? Overpriced and hard to buy.
SSDs? Overpriced and, while still able to be bought (today), they'll start getting scarce. They are also no good for long-term, unpowered storage.

All of this is because of hyperscalers¹ sucking ravenously on the teat of the AI bubble. When the bubble finally burts—and it will—the second-hand computer bits market is going to be **LIT**.

¹ Hyperscaler: a tech-sounding name for a person or organisation that thinks big is good, therefore bloody enormous is better, no matter what the expense to others or the environment.
