  6. "The Vistra fire in Moss Landing caught everyone by surprise. What we can learn from it?” —David Schmalz, #MontereyCountyWeekly cover story

"On Feb. 13, 2022, a similar incident occurred at Vistra’s Moss 100 facility, and this time, both #Vistra facilities were taken offline.

"Meanwhile, PG&E’s 182.5-megawatt Elkhorn facility came online in April 2022. Unlike both Vistra facilities, the Elkhorn’s batteries were not in buildings – they were in an array of 256 Tesla Megapacks on 33 concrete slabs.

In the early morning of Sept. 20 of that year, just over five months later, a fire broke out in one of #Tesla Megapacks at the facility, prompting the closure of Highway 1 and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. Though the fire only burned for six hours, the orders remained in effect until just before 7pm due to the risk of toxic smoke inhalation.”

  11. March 5 update from District 2 Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church on the Moss Landing battery fire.

“Current monitoring focuses on hydrogen fluoride and particulate matter, but traditional air quality indexes measure ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particle pollution —not heavy metals. However, when batteries burn, it is reasonable to assume that small heavy metal particles are released into the air.”

  12. “After the fire, his lab tested the soil in a 2-mile radius of the plant, which is near the Elkhorn Slough estuary. After taking multiple measurements from about 100 locations, his lab observed a hundreds-fold rise in the concentration of the three toxic heavy metals along the top layer of the soil….Aiello’s team is also turning to assess the impact of their findings on the Elkhorn Slough, which he said is the second-largest estuary in California and one of the most diverse and essential ecosystems for hundreds of fish and bird species. It acts as a carbon sink and buffer for sea level rise.”

  13. We encourage a thorough read of newsletter released this eve by District 2 Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church on the Moss Landing battery fire. us21.campaign-archive.com/?u=b

"When I took office two years ago, I accepted several tours of the #Vistra facility, including a tour inside the building that burned. The facility and its safety systems appeared impressive. I was personally given the guarantee that a fire similar to the one that occurred in 2022 at the neighboring PG&E / #Tesla operation could not happen at Vistra. We know that is not true. This disaster is worse.

"There has been some great #news reporting on this story, but there have also been some errors. There is a great deal of #misinformation being spread. That is because there are a lot of unknowns. I would urge everyone to doublecheck every source."

  14. The problem is that brand new BEVs are catching on fire. This is a huge problem. People are trying to deflect this fact by comparing new BEVs to very old ICE cars. That is an apples-to-oranges comparison.

In all likelihood, BEV fires are about as common as similarly old ICE car fires.

  15. Let’s not delude ourselves. There is no possibility of large trucks switching to batteries. Even if they somehow caught on, they will be banned shortly thereafter due to the fire risk. People who want green heavy transportation must look at other options.

  16. There used to be a joke about how #SolarFarms were immune to fires and explosions (as opposed to #NuclearPowerPlants). But a quick search revealed that those do happen -- but the cause is usually the #LithiumIon batteries, not the solar panels!

  17. I love this:

    "⚠️Safety Tips:
    - Remember to prepare for travel, especially during the current elevated temperatures.
    - Provide plenty of water and supplies in your vehicle.
    - Plan your route accordingly and ensure you have enough supplies, fuel, and charge in your vehicle.
    - Use caution with any electronic routing systems that may suggest alternate routes, especially those that include dirt roads. Often, these areas are unimproved trails and roads, which can lead to vehicles getting stuck, a significant problem experienced throughout the day yesterday."

  19. Latest update from the CHP log on the I-15 lithium battery fire incident. Something about waking up parked drivers and turning them around onto the I15 southbound around Field Road. From San Bernardino County Fire, they were supplying water to drivers who were stuck there yesterday (and must be still stuck) #I15 #batteryfire #Mojave #DesertDisaster

  20. The issue of non-UL certified #ebike #batteries isn't just an issue of ebikes (and #scooters). Li-ion batteries are everywhere. You would think that legislators would be interested in general regulation of batteries and charging systems, but apparently not. 🤷‍♂️
