I installed #Immich on my homeserver and transferred all photos from Apple Photos and a few shared folders. I’m very impressed: it’s really fast, and the mobile apps are great.

The installation documentation recommends Docker Compose, but #Podman worked fine, and I converted the containerfile to #quadlets with “podlet”. It took quite a bit of time to figure everything out (containers are still a bit daunting for me) but the end result is worth it: a pod with four containers, defined in 5 concise unit files.

A really fast, really smol hardware-isolated Linux VM. This is one level of isolation above using a containerization environment like Docker or Podman. Good for running AI Agents in a safe sandbox.

#Linux tech is just awesome. I wrote a backup script on my home server which regularly saves my #Podman containers and volumes. Since the file system is btrfs, I can create a snapshot of the files on the fly and archive them without interrupting my services.

Das Ergebnis ist besser als erwartet. Von den Antworten nutzen ein Großteil rootless Podman und zum Glück deutlich weniger rootfull Docker. Gerade letzteres überrascht mich. Von dem, was ich sonst so von Menschen mitbekomme, überwiegt in den Erzählungen rootfull Docker, und das meist, ohne dass die Menschen sich bewusst sind, was sie da tun.

ugghhh....just a week after I update my Gentoo containers base stage3 image, there comes the new binutils:2.47.

So that might cause breakage for distcc (binutils and gcc needs to be same on all distcc). Thankfully building process is all tidy'd up now so will update it soon

Interesting morning.

A #wordpress site that I host for a friend got compromised. Attacker apparently walked right in as the admin, and raised hell. All for an apparent SEO boost. *shrug*.

Time to have a chat about password security with my friend.

The good news though. #Podman successfully contained the attack as far as I can tell. And even if the attacker got out, the image mode host it all runs on would have made it hard for them to do any real damage.

That being said, ive got a plan to further isolate my application pods. Ive been too lazy to move to user based podman, even though its a mature feature. Now's the time to do that work.

As an aside, the incident response was severely sped up using Claude. I knew what I was looking for, but man, claude is a lot faster at getting it all together and spotting things I might have glanced over. I know opinions on #ai are mixed, but for something like this, a personal server with no staff to hand off things to, other than me.. Life saver.
