The case for running Arch, Ubuntu, and a real RHEL userspace as long-lived containers on a Fedora laptop. Home directory mounted in, GUI apps integrated, VSCode treats the box as a remote target.
Bonus: on a Fedora host registered with subscription-manager, RHEL entitlements propagate into UBI containers automatically via Podman's default mounts.conf. No flags, no manual bind mounts.
Especially good on Atomic spins.

Over the last months I tried to move from gui to cli. Started with shift from #kde plasma to #niri. On Ubuntu 24LTS this was quite problem, first I used #pacstall, but that was better, I changed to #nix package manager, it simply has a the packages, no need to cargo and apt/nala as much. Also I can chair stuff simpler between systems. Nix also enabled me to remove everything but one #distrobox container. As #arch already has #qgis 4

#Linux adventures... After my last "successful" attempt to install the latest version of kdeconnect by using the #kde neon libraries. And getting left with a very broken #xubuntu...
I'm now attempting to install inside #distrobox, which is a tool I'd never heard of till today. It's unfortunate that the version available for #Ubuntu is so old and that there is no #AppImage or #flatpak alternative.
This process is.... not fast.
Installing a tool shouldn't take so long that I could post this.

I've uninstalled #Lutris and replaced it with #Heroic. What sucks though is that unlike Lutris and #Steam, Heroic doesn't bundle runtimes for older #Linux games, so now I have to run the Windows versions of those games through #Wine #Proton. And maybe it's just me, but running the Windows version of anything when there's already a Linux version irks me.
I tried using #Distrobox containers to run those games, but I must be doing something wrong 'cause that didn't work at all.

Estava dando uma olhada no #Nitrux. Não instalei (nem tenho máquina adequada para isso no momento), mas fiquei bastante curioso para brincar com ela.
É mais uma distribuição #Linux imutável em XFS, orientada em torno de AppBoxes (um formato autocontido e em caixa de areia, com um repositório derivado da biblioteca de pacotes do #Debian) e de contêineres rootless (daqueles que hoje podemos subir em minutos com o #Podman nos bastidores, usando o #Distrobox e o #Boxbuddy).
Ela adota o #OpenRC como init system. Conta ainda com um utilitário de linha de comando pensado para virtualização com passagem de GPU. É o tipo de sistema para instalar num desktop tradicional ou mini-PC docável, no qual há o desejo de rodar o #Windows em conjunto com o Linux.

How do you people use #distrobox or #toolbx?
Do you create one container per project/topic you are working on?
Or do you have your #containers named like their base image and install your stuff just wherever it is easiest?
Do you reuse your home dir for each container or create a private one for each?
Do you have a "default" container or do you work on the host if you open up your terminal?
Where do you install #tmux (host, default container, in each container)?

@passthejoe because it's the default on whatever it is you're running? I think #distrobox is probably a better option for a desktop usecase, but #toolbx is perfectly cromulent for a server, where you're basically just using #microOS or #coreOS for a container host, it doesn't need to be fancy.

Testing out #Nix on #SteamOS/#SteamDeck, and so far so good! It's been helpful in getting any of the missing non-graphical packages I need, such as to install and get my #KDE/#Dolphin service menu working (https://github.com/irfanhakim-as/kde-service-menu-reimage) - where I needed a couple of missing deps like #ImageMagick and #Exiftool.
Most of the graphical apps I need are easily found/installable on #Flatpak though, except something like #Alacritty. I previously installed it on this system using #Distrobox and it worked great, I thought to test installing a graphical app off of Nix - but it doesn't seem that worked with Alacritty. From my search it's something to do with GL/Vulkan apps outside of #NixOS or something of the like. There were also some apps that aren't available as Flatpaks, are available on #ArchLinux 's #AUR, but aren't available on Nix.
There will also be things that don't work too, I think for reasons that may be obvious to others, such as adding HEIC support to KDE apps like Dolphin (for previews) and #Gwenview (for image viewing). On a 'normal' Linux system, this is done by installinglibheifandkimageformats(pretty sure u need both). Installing them on this SteamOS machine tho off of Nix, doesn't really help the system's Dolphin and Gwenview app to be able to serve/open HEIC files.
Still, I know I'm just barely scratching the surface of what I could do with Nix - even as just a 'package manager'. I understand why maybe #Valve is holding themselves back from pre-installing Nix for now tho (unlike something like #Podman or #Distrobox, which they were surprisingly - in a good way, happy to do) bcos the situation with the Nix project, atm, is a lil confusing.. but as recommended by others on here, I think I'm having a good luck/time with the #Lix project's 'flavour' of Nix.

I like #AeonDesktop. It's an immutable system from #OpenSuse that starts you with a very clean and minimal #Gnome desktop.
The system is responsive, with automatic updates that happen invisibly in the background. In the event of a bad update, it automatically rolls back to the last working state, which is good.
Software is provided primarily through #Flatpak, but it comes with a preconfigured #Distrobox/#Podman setup for OpenSuse #Tumbleweed if you need not-flatpak stuff, and you can add other OSes, so if you really need it, you can pull something from the AUR or whatever (although I question why you're using an immutable OpenSuse system if you need something from the AUR).
It comes without bells and whistles, assuming you can pick out your own. There's not even default wallpaper.
So if you're a beginner, a lazy developer who wants a system that just takes care of itself, or otherwise want a stable, secure #Linux system that just kinda works, Aeon Desktop does the job.

After having had good experiences with #pitivi in the past, I recently tried #davinciresolve in a #distrobox container. Yesterday, I took a look at #lightworks, which, among the commercial options, can be installed refreshingly easily as a #flatpak. #linux

One thing I have from immutable (atomic) distros, and is how cumbersome is installing apps that require root permissions.
Supposedly you have to use Distrobox. Even that never worked for me. I always have to resort to `rpm-ostree` and then uninstall it so BootC can update the system. Every single time.

Well, yes, because you wanted to use #zshell (or #fisshell in my case) because you want to WORK in the host system shell. That’s what’s wrong. The host system shell is just for administering other containers (including the #distrobox ones) and you should remove all temptation to use it for real work.

So, distcc lets you compile C or C++ applications on machines (or nodes) over the network, sharing the workload. But for the life of me I can't make it work from within a distrobox on the Steam Deck.
So I tried icecream (icecc), which is made by the SuSE folks. Not only does it work with distrobox, but it requires less configuration (just enable some systemd services or run the daemon) and everything Just Works. Having three machines + compiling projects with the --parallel flag should make even Qt compile quickly.

I purchased my Arch btw Solidigm P44 Pro btw SSD from Mouser btw. It will be running EndeavourOS when I get around to it, and Resolve will be going in a CentOS container with Distrobox.
