For fellow fans of #IRC - having recently started using the soju.im bouncer, I noticed none of the #GUI or #TUI clients with decent support of it were packaged in #Fedora yet.
Not for much longer - #senpai is now available for testing! `sudo dnf --enablerepo=updates-testing senpai` is your friend.
I have an existing config on my #Debian machine, and running senpai from a Fedora #distrobox container just works - everything shows up that are expected to (you have to rejoin direct chats with people, but the history would load)

I finally moved my Garmin app development setup to Asahi Linux. If you want to develop a Garmin app on any modern Linux, or if the idea of a programming language called Monkey C sounds funny, I've sure got an article for you.

I wanted to build Kollect for Android without filling Fedora 44 with Java, Gradle, Android SDKs, emulators, and assorted development debris.
So I put the entire mobile toolchain in an Ubuntu Distrobox. It builds APKs, deploys them via wireless ADB, and even runs the Android emulator.
The app also enriches links locally using Gemini Nano through AICore on my Pixel 10 Pro. Private, fast, and effectively free.

@Fando Yo digo que depende de cada quién. Hay muchas personas que por trabajo necesitan lo último en software, o por lo menos algo no muy anticuado.
Pero también hay personas que no tienen problema en trabajar con algo como #Debian Stable. Por ejemplo, yo, para parte de mi trabajo, solo necesito #LibreOffice, #Obsidian y #Zotero, más el navegador. Y dos de ellos están en Flatpak, así que no hay prob. Y si necesito algo más moderno, siempre está #Distrobox.

After my long klutzing with Flatpaks (which I'm generally OK with, btw) I've now really come to like Distrobox on my non-Slackware installs. With a Fedora toolbox running Librewolf, Brave Origin and now also KeepassXC (and Krusader of course ;-) the install of Chimera Linux is perfectly complemented. All software on the system originates from trusted and direct sources. Cool stuff.

Those of us on #atomic distros - how do you install bash tools like #nmap, #telnet etc that arent in the base image?
I have been building my own sysext, which, is a lot of work and needs to be manually updated from time to time, but I had someone suggest the #brew repos as an alternative.
I previously aliased #distrobox commands
I try not to layer on my ostree, as it slows down updating so badly.

#Bluefin doesn't replace #Toolbox with #Distrobox. The image includes both. Use your favorite. And probably 99% of the things you want to layer can be taken care of with #Homebrew, which is also included on the image. I still use Distrobox for my development environments, but those everyday CLI utilities come from Brew. https://projectbluefin.io/

I deal with the AUR as an Arch user like this:
1.) If a project maintains their own repo, I tend to feel ok using the AUR for it.
2.) For a project either not in the AUR or is but not maintained by the project themselves, I use flatpak if its official, or use distrobox to install the version the project maintains/suggests
Never install from the AUR if the project doesn't maintain the repo themselves

Hello everyone after a long time! Hope you're all doing great, I've missed this community :)
My internet is finally back to a relatively stable state, which means I can jump back into my old passion projects!
I recently saw that a native ARM64 beta port of the Steam client was released, and I knew it was the perfect time to test it on my Linux phone.
I'm currently running #postmarketOS with #PlasmaMobile on my PocoPhone F1. Since pmOS is based on Alpine, it uses musl libc, which doesn't support running these binaries natively. To bypass this, I set up an Ubuntu 24.04 #Distrobox container and installed the ARM64 Steam client along with box64 and box86. The process wasn't as straightforward as some guides suggest (like the one below); I had to do some extra tweaking. I'll definitely write a detailed blog post or a postmarketOS wiki entry about it soon!

I managed to boot Steam into Big Picture mode and went straight to setting up Proton.
Note: The Proton 11 ARM64 mentioned in the link didn't work for me, so I used Proton Experimental instead.
I paired my PS4 controller via Bluetooth, and it worked flawlessly out of the box! For the gaming test, I downloaded Crab Game (kept it lightweight due to my strict data limits).
Against all odds, it actually launched! Running via Proton Experimental + Box64/86 inside Distrobox on my phone, I managed to get a relatively playable 20-30 FPS. Linux mobile gaming is getting wild! 🐧🎮

Estaba por publicar un meme haciendo sátira del desmadre que hay con el #AUR en #ArchLinux, y regodeándome porque yo uso otras distros, hasta que recordé que justo tengo una #distrobox de Arch instalada en mi sistema principal con yay configurado :pepelol: .
Siempre se me olvida que la tengo porque solo la abro (y actualizo) cada muerte de obispo, así que asumo que todavía estoy a salvo. Supongo que, de momento, lo mejor es no hacer nada :blobcat_thisisfine: .

Descobri que o editor de leiaute para componentes quebrou de novo no #KNIME, tanto na versão LTS quanto na versão regular (atualização a cada 6 meses).
Com a interface baseada em #Eclipse sendo depreciada, pelo menos aqui no #openSUSE Leap 16, a única saída para modificar a disposição de elementos é utilizar a interface nova da versão regular.
É um problema controlável, mas muito irritante. Para mim, que não desenho dashboards e não me preocupo muito com a ordem das configurações nas folhas de propriedades, diria que é imperceptível na maioria das vezes. O lance é que odeio software funcionando pela metade.
Tentar utilizar a funcionalidade com problemas resulta em encerramento abrupto do programa. Bem ruim.
Pela avaliação do log de erro HotSpot, tem algum problema entranhado numa chamada GTK. Com o #Distrobox apresentando alguns problemas devido ao #SELinux, namespaces e o meu esquema de particionamento com complexidade acima da média, não entendi ainda como contornar o problema.
Minha vontade, no final, é xingar o GTK, mas não sei se estaria sendo injusto. Eu costumo achar que as coisas quebram desnecessariamente. Por que não conseguimos ter software maduro e tedioso?

I’ve spent some time this weekend reinstalling my desktop with #CachyOS. Previously it used #bazzite, as it was mostly used for gaming, but I was also using it to run some heavier game servers and doing all of that in #distrobox was getting annoying. So far it’s been a nice experience, and I’m enjoying being able to mess stuff up again :blobmiou:

There is something deeply amusing about running openSUSE Tumbleweed in Distrobox and the frontend Distroshelf, and installing a program there for usage on my Arch-based distro.
It's fun and makes me quite happy, I want to eventually play more with dev stuff so this makes sense for me to do. At first in simple ways, then more complex ways! Still not ready to totally handle a pure terminal workflow, so Distroshelf is a lifesaver for me!

The case for running Arch, Ubuntu, and a real RHEL userspace as long-lived containers on a Fedora laptop. Home directory mounted in, GUI apps integrated, VSCode treats the box as a remote target.
Bonus: on a Fedora host registered with subscription-manager, RHEL entitlements propagate into UBI containers automatically via Podman's default mounts.conf. No flags, no manual bind mounts.
Especially good on Atomic spins.

Over the last months I tried to move from gui to cli. Started with shift from #kde plasma to #niri. On Ubuntu 24LTS this was quite problem, first I used #pacstall, but that was better, I changed to #nix package manager, it simply has a the packages, no need to cargo and apt/nala as much. Also I can chair stuff simpler between systems. Nix also enabled me to remove everything but one #distrobox container. As #arch already has #qgis 4

Using homebrew for the first time on Bluefin I immediately hit a snag trying to install 'cowsay' (homebrew-installed perl vs system perl). This led me to try out Distrobox for the first time and it works like a charm.
New ways of doing things introduce new tools and methods. I'm approaching Bluefin with "beginner's mind". 🙂
