    and no more Windows 7

  4. I installed @linuxmint Debian Edition this evening. I overwrote the Ubuntu Desktop that I had installed over the weekend.

It's taking a little getting used to as it does things a little differently, but it's not too bad.

I moved the panel to the top of the screen as I have grown accustomed to it from my years of using Ubuntu. Also I had to bump up the fonts to aid my aging eyes.

Otherwise. It's been a nice simple shift.

  5. With Canonical going down the AI-hype path, I hope #LinuxMint switches over to #Debian for their upstream.

You've been keeping #LMDE around for a reason.

  6. For Linux newbies, the Debian installer may be a bit challenging (at least it used to be). So mxLinux wins there.

The Devuan installers are also not Linux newbie friendly, but I really like the TUI based Devuan Server installer and then choose a desktop environment as one of the last steps.

I chose Devuan because I am interested in not having SystemD.

Debian is also good, but for ease of use and installation I would usually recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition to a Linux Newbie would wants to run Debian.

So I am guessing the reason is that some Debian derivatives have an an installer that is easier to use and understand than Debian itself.

  7. After installing the XFCE power manager plugin, the brightness controls on the keyboard work too. I love this stuff.

  8. LMDE7 / Debian 13 is totally functional on the writing laptop, including XFCE4.

Just had to work around the fact that the brightness control isn't working, but with a few tricks usinc xrandr that was easily fixed.

Glad I did this. If I have to shift to another distro on the main laptop, it will be this same setup.

  10. #VSCodium peeps.

I have just moved to a new LAMPs web development platform using LMDE7. VSCodium won't allow me to directly edit the canonical directory (ie /var/www/html/whatever) but sends me into the tmpfs (/run/user/$USER/doc/xxxxx). This FUBARs git. Is there a setting that will allow me to edit files directly?

EDIT: Solved. It was an issue with flatpak. I installed the deb and it works fine now.

  13. @ColinTheMathmo hi :) #mint and #lmde only 64 bit aviable. you are shure your mashine is only 64bit? verry verry old?

  14. Well I've been using Linux (LMDE) as my sole desktop OS for a bit over a month now, and it's starting to feel mundane in a good way. I spent a lot of time in the first two weeks setting things up, configuring, testing, tweaking, etc... and that has all basically wrapped up. I'm pretty much just using it now.

It's not perfect, and the solutions to certain things are still Very Linux, but my Windows setup wasn't perfect either, I just got used to dealing with its eccentricities, like having to reboot my PC once after powering it on so that the audio didn't crackle, or all of the windows on my desktop moving onto one monitor after they go into power save mode because DisplayPort.

I now have a variation on this theme under Linux, if I power on the machine, the monitors are swapped until I reboot once. But I also rarely do that, so 🤷 I'll see if I can figure it out eventually if it really bothers me enough.

I have run into one instance so far of "darn, no Linux app, guess I'm not using that". Was thinking about trying out Proton Drive, but no Linux support. Maybe I could run it under wine, might give that a try eventually or not, we'll see.

Was bleibt noch übrig?
  16. I love using Debian. I think it is so interesting that so many distros have been or currently are based on Debian. While I prefer vanillia Debian, I wanted to list all of the Debian based distros (non-Ubuntu) I know of and categorize them based on what makes them unique.

    Daily Drivers (Ease of use):

LMDE - Linux Mint + Debian, no Ubuntu, Mint polish

  17. I just want to give a shoutout to Hardinfo2, an invaluable and very easy to use graphical system information tool for #Linux. I installed it from the repository on #LMDE - most other distros have it in their repos as well! 🧡 🐧

  18. Upgraded @linuxmint on my daily business machine for the second time. Without a problem, almost perfectly organized process.

  19. My #Linux story...
For years I used #Ubuntu then a few of its flavours after GNOME 2 died.
Then, #LinuxMint when snap was forced onto us, and since I used #Debian for servers, I moved to #LMDE as it felt more familiar.
Grew tired of the #Cinnamon desktop and wanted something more modern. Installed GNOME and with a few tweaks, I found what I was looking for.
At that point, I may as well just run Debian with GNOME. So that's what I've done 👍
When #GNOME3 came out I hated it! How times change...

  20. Every day I backup my home folder to my external usb drive using #rsync. It only takes a couple minutes. Once a week or so I make a system snapshot using #Timeshift.

  22. Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 “Gigi” released!

Linux Mint has released a new version of Linux Mint Debian Edition, called “Gigi”, that is an upgrade over the previous version, “Faye”. This version is a long-term support release, which means that you’ll get package updates for a very long time. This version of LMDE is based on the latest version of Debian, which is Debian 13 Trixie.

This version of LMDE brings new features and enhancements to refine your desktop experience, and is easier to use. This is based on Debian Trixie to align with their update rhythm for packages to ensure that you’ll have the most secure and stable system, while retaining Linux Mint’s aesthetics.

Check the below system requirements to determine whether your computer is able to run this version of LMDE or not:

    • 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
    • 20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
    • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

You can download the torrent of Linux Mint Debian Edition here, but you’ll have to use a BitTorrent client, such as qBittorrent (open source torrent client). If you don’t plan to use torrents or are uncomfortable in using Peer-to-Peer clients, you can consult a list of mirrors here.

  23. Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7 has hit the download mirrors! Here is one at a German university: ftp.fau.de/mint/iso/debian/

When I downloaded the ISO image yesterday, it still had beta status. That did not prevent me from installing it on my son's laptop. What follows are first impressions from a mixed father & son perspective.

I switched from MS-DOS straight to GNU/Linux and never used Windows much. My preferred distro is #Debian because it is the universal operating system created by a large, global community. I spend most of my time on the command line.

My son is now ready to give up Windows because support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, and he does not want to upgrade to Windows 11 due to all of the malware it comes with.

He installed and occasionally used Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) on an old computer in the past. As Debian 13 (“trixie”) is quite fresh and also rock-solid, I wanted to give #LMDE another try. Many years ago, my parents used it happily.

LMDE comes with the #Cinnamon desktop which looks a lot like Windows. You can download an official Debian live ISO with Cinnamon pre-installed. I tried it, but it clearly has not been configured quite as lovingly as Linux Mint's. No wonder – Linux Mint developed Cinnamon in the first place.

To my mind, this makes LMDE7 the ideal choice for beginners and pros alike. Installing it (even with full disk encryption) is a breeze – if you give it the entire disk to play with. Try to avoid multi-boot installations if at all possible. If you need Windows later, you can run it in a virtual machine. Be sure to make a complete backup of your Windows system first! We used the free Rescuezilla for this.

So far, we have not run into any issue with LMDE7. OK, there was one gotcha: When configuring automatic backups in Timeshift, do not choose the boot partition as the target. It would fill up very quickly.

  24. @axantoni
I used #Ubuntu with the #Unity desktop for a while, but then switched to #LinuxMint because of its ease of use.
I now use #LinuxMintDebianEdition (#LMDE) because of its better compatibility with RaspberryPi and #Raspbian (#RaspberryPiOS).

    @waldstepper

  25. I've installed 7 on my laptop and I must say... Now I'm tempted to switch from 22.2 to LMDE 7 on my main rig, once it releases. It's basically Debian Stable but with Cinnamon instead of GNOME. Which is juuuust fine by me!

  26. Querida comunidad Linuxera

  28. Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 Beta is now live!

With Debian 13 being released last month, the Linux Mint team have just released the beta version of the upcoming Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 distribution. This follows the global rollout of the Linux Mint 22.2 “Zara” distribution based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat for stability. Linux Mint Debian Edition is a Linux Mint project that aims to provide the same experience as the normal version provides, but with Debian as the base.

Linux Mint Debian 7 has just reached the beta stage that is based on this year’s Debian release, which is version 13 Trixie. The beta version has entered the global rollout, and it’s now available across all official Linux Mint mirrors worldwide, and you can also download the torrent.

    System requirements:

    • 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
    • 20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
    • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

You can find more information about this version of LMDE here.

  30. I keep hearing about people "distro hopping" from one Linux desktop distribution to the next. I never understood this. As a teenager in the 00s, I tried Fedora, but I wasn't ready for Linux (or maybe Linux wasn't ready for such casual users), so I dropped it quickly. I tried Ubuntu for like two seconds in my early 20s, hated the desktop environment, then used only Linux Mint for about the last decade. I recently switched to Linux Mint Debian Edition.

I like the clean feeling of a new install, but I have no desire to keep fiddling with my system and customizing everything over and over. It's tedious. I just want my computer to work. Am I the odd one out here?

  31. Monkeying around with Linux Mint Debian Edition.

I really don't like the app panel paradigm as used in Cinnamon. I installed Plank for now just 'cuz I remember the name of it.

What else should I try? Other docks? An app launcher I can bind to the super key?

One of these decades I'll train my finger memory to remember that Cinnamon has 2 n's and 1 m. Ha.

  32. A question for #linux experts..I have a USB stick, which served as a live USB for #LMDe, but after that I've formatted it and now I have a few movies there...but in Linux Mint they are correctly shown, in #raspberrypi3 I use for my TV, it still shows #lmde6 live USB..how's that possible?
Please, advise how to remedy this situation.

  34. I've installed Linux Mint Debian Edition onto one of my machines! I have been using Mint (the one made using Ubuntu) for about a decade and I'm happy to finally cut #Amazon out of the loop.

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) feels almost exactly like Linux Mint. The only difference I've noticed is that it asks me about the GRUB bootloader more at setup than I recall from Linux Mint.

If all continues to go well with my first machine, I'll be switching the other machines to Debian Edition, as well.

I had a hard time finding information on the differences between specifically Debian and LMDE online that wasn't just AI-generated clickbait garbage, but I have the general impression that LMDE has more set up for me at the outset, which is what I prefer.

  35. A while ago I upgraded my old #netbook running #op25 from #LMDE5 to #LMDE6 - I had to recompile OP25 and a couple of other small things to get it working.
But it has never worked as well as it did with LMDE5, so today I've decided to wipe the whole thing, and start over with LMDE5
I don't really need it connected to the internet, but was thinking about setting up streaming. I think it might be too slow do that correctly.
