Hab gerade im Keller noch ein paar alte Heft-CDs aus der GameStar gefunden, u.a. diese hier aus 2004 mit einer Vollversion des DLH98. Im Original noch gedacht für Windows 98, 2000 oder XP, läuft das Programm bei mir nun in einer Windows 7 VirtualBox unter Windows 11. Retro und so. 😁

For any #Canadian Linux users out there who haven't done their #taxes and are wondering about whether they have to fire up a Windows VM just to run tax software again, here's an option. There's also potentially a nasty surprise in store for you if you do this in VirtualBox.
I've used a number of tax packages over the years, as they merged or got bought out by other companies. For the last 10, it's been #UFile, which is #Windows-only. [1] I usually fire up an old Windows VM in #VirtualBox, but if you're running a recent Linux kernel, you'll find VirtualBox is broken and won't run. Oops. Now you're in a panic because you need to do your taxes before the end of the month...
I haven't checked to see if you could use kvm/virt-manager or another #VM system.
The next obvious way, if you don't want to install Windows on bare metal, is to try using #Wine to run the software directly on #Linux. If you search the net, you'll find a little info about doing this. A lot is ancient, but still seems to apply - but the stuff I found was not detailed at all, just people saying "it works" or similar.
I was able to finish the process, but ran into some issues, a few of which were not obvious. I thought this might help others.
[1] Well, they have an online version you can use in a browser, but I don't know why anyone would feel comfortable putting such sensitive information into some random company's web page.

It took a bit of figuring out but I managed to have this #WindowsXP VM access my parallel port on my #Linux host so I can use the official app for writing my #GameBoyAdvance flash card!
Now to figure out how to “activate” Windows XP. Any pointers?

CW: Storytime about trying to mount an ext4 drive on macOS.
So, I got the magnificent idea of formatting an external HDD to ext4.
Everything was fine, until I had to mount it on macOS (I still use that OS for some tasks). Okay… Not a problem, I think, I just have to install macFUSE and ext4fuse.
Yes, done. Now… let's plug in the drive and mount it, and… Oh! Surprise! "You don't have permissions to access this drive." What? I try and retry and nothing happens… So I get another ext4 drive (this one had a Linux system on it, not just files) and it worked!
Well, I cannot figure out how to make it work with my files drive then. But I do not give up.
"Time to VM!" I think. I install VirtualBox, make a VM with a lightweight Debian-based distro and when I'm about to activate USB passthrough… I just can't. I search for a solution and it turns out that it's something to do with permissions, again. And a lot of people have this issue in forums. I'm fed up. I uninstall VirtualBox and go to sleep.

A new day, a new way to suffer.
"I won't be beaten by a file system" I say to myself, determined to make it work this time. Since VMing still has the best chances to work, I give it another try, this time with UTM, a VM host and system emulator for macOS based on QEMU.
Surprisingly, UTM is simple and easy to work with, very user-friendly. So I have my VM running in no time, and (as if it wasn't enough complication) I decide to try out an Arch-based distro, EndeavourOS.
USB passthrough on UTM works flawlessly, and it's easy to use. Problem solved? Hell no, now I have to be able to share a folder between host and VM.
Thankfully, UTM's documentation is clear and, after a few package installs and a reboot, I manage to get it set up. And yes, folks, problem solved, this time for good.
May my problem have been solved another simpler way? Yes, quite likely. But as someone who hadn't used VMs on macOS, and had little to no experience with Arch-based systems (only Manjaro but didn't actually use it as my main OS), I learnt a lot.
P.S.: I'm aware of anylinuxfs, but I have an Intel Mac, so, that's not an option.

For the screen to appear on the primary display: it was necessary to use settings on the secondary display, to temporarily make the secondary display primary.

Well, #Debian #Trixie 64-bit seems to be rock-solid when I run it in #Virtualbox, it's only a crashy piece of shit in #UTM. 32-bit Trixie is fine in UTM, as are #FreeBSD and #OpenBSD. This isn't a general 64-bit #Linux issue, as #Devuan #Excalibur seems to be stable.
I suppose that means it's time to ditch Debian for my #CPAN testing.

I made an upgrade from #debian12 to #debian13 on all my devices: desktop computer, laptop, VPS.
Everything went smooth with #debian upgrade as usual :ablobcatcoffee:
The only thing wrong was upgrade to #plasma6 for which #KDE switched from #X11 to #wayland and I was dumb enough to decide to give it another chance (my previous tries of Wayland were just failures)
So it's still not good. It's really quite better than months ago but there's application that can't work anymore, like #ksnip :ablobcatknitsweats:There's an interesting discussion about why it doesn't work anymore here:

TX runs like a razor, even inside VirtualBox.

So I tried a few things, namely switching Virtualbox network modes. But I could not see packets between the VMs.
I imagine when traffic is between VMs #Virtualbox is not putting the packets in the TCP/IP stack where #Wireshark on the host can see them. Only when the traffic crosses to the host or the network beyond does Wireshark (or #tshark) see it.
I don't want to capture traffic on the VMs themselves (having to install Wireshark or something else on Windows 98...).
So I searched around and found the article below in the Virtualbox wiki on network tracing.
You can essentially configure the NIC on each VM to capture all packets and log them to a pcap. So this is what I'll use.

Всех приветствую, читатели Хабра! Пятая часть анализа защищенности, правда в этот раз системы (серверной) Vulnhub. Да в этот раз, я поднял целую ОС на virtualbox, а не докер контейнер, соответсвенной в этой статье совершенно иной метод виртуализации, и соответсвенно способ атаки. Соответсвенно в этой части я расскажу где скачать данную ОС, как ее запустить, как атаковать, и как получить доступ. Однако как и предидущие примеры, эта система так же относится к Vulnhub.
