  1. Slackosundries is turning into my own little repo, with at least the packages that i use myself also. Hence the addition of Librewolf x86_64 in there.

  2. A fresh delivery of slackosundries, my totally random collection of Slackware sw packages.
The latest version of Brave Origin (1.91.149-1) is there for the taking.
Also: a desktop client for Filen encrypted cloud storage is included in slackosundries now. I use that myself. The other packages had no updates.

  3. For posterity. The distro I ran the longest was ArchLabs, for 18 months. Epic!
Next month it will finally be surpassed. Then i've been running Slackware KDE by @jloc0 for a grand total of 19 months. Thanks mate 🍻 !

  4. Updated ‘ktown’ packages, and a heads-up

Time for a KDE Plasma6 package refresh. On KDE's announcement page, the releases of KDE Gear 26.04.1 and Frameworks 6.26.0 were announced yesterday and today. Since OS packagers have early access to the source tarballs, I had everything compiled and ready for days and could simply push everything into my 'ktown' repository today.

  5. Solving the mystery of niri and swayidle—elogind

Based on the debug output from swayidle, I started researching what the heck org.freedesktop.login1.Manager was doing. When using sway, this was not used on my non-systemd system, and swayidle works as expected.

With sway, the way it is working, from a casual user’s perspective:

    1. swayidle intercepts for an “idle state” message.
    2. swayidle runs the script that I have configured—swaylock-plugin locks and the background is rotated continually.

Using niri on my non-systemd system, there does seem to be this extra piece in the mix—logind. Or in my case elogind.

    1. swayidle intercepts a PrepareForSleep signal...

  9. Debug output from swayidle on both sway and niri

I captured debug output from swayidle for a period time when using sway and then when using niri, which helped me understand a bit more of what’s going on. It seems that when running sway, I am getting idle state events at the expected intervals (300s), but when I am running niri, I am getting sleep events at unexpected intervals.

In a screen recording, niri almost immediately sent the sleep within 2 minutes!

The difference seems to be that swayidle is receiving property changes from org.freedesktop.login1.Manager when using niri, but a simple "idle state" when using sway.

    I think I will start...

  13. Re: Why does niri stop network connection on idle while sway does not?

Since most of my posts about #niri here have been a bit scattered I thought I would take some time to document what I have setup on Slackware current (non-systemd).

My main problem with niri is that idle is not detected properly as it is with sway, and will kick in while I am typing, in a video call, or seemingly at random. I could live with this, but my network connection is disrupted each time niri launches swayidle unlike sway which does not exhibit this behavior.

Most of the way things are setup to launch is so that screen capture will work.

I don't think any of the configuration accurately...

  17. I'm using Firefox (based) browser on most of my computers but whenever I'm on my Slackware, I'm using Fallkon. And have no issues.

Is this the sign for me to switch? No, obviously not, because I also have a Windows machine I have to use (at work) so Firefox is more multi platform option. Plus the synchronization.

But it's nice to use something else.

  18. Yep. Done. Version Beta v1.91.135 of Brave Origin for Slackware by yours truly is available. Plus some additional tweaking tips by me. Happy browsing!

  19. Yep, the odd one out. I downloaded Brave Origin (on Linux it's free) and made a Slackware pkg of it. Even opened a repo to share, but I'll have to upgrade my Codeberg to upload files with a size over 100Mb. Fair enough, another to do. I'll be back.

  20. Maybe I just need to make peace with the fact that #Slackware (-current) and #Sway (with its own swaybar) are my comfort place and stop wondering if I could be comfortable elsewhere. Like I have neither desire nor even curiosity about other editing environment then #Emacs.

  21. Java SDK updates for Slackware all across the board

Today I pushed fresh Slackware packages (for 15.0 and -current, and 32bit as well as 64bit) for various new OpenJDK releases. This is a quarterly process where the Java developers release a "GA" version. The "GA" stands for General Availability. The "GA" version indicates that the software is considered stable, feature-complete, and ready for use in production environments.

  22. KDE 6_26.04 for Slackware-current (almost free of Qt5)

To be honest, I was waiting for a move from Pat. But I got restless, Pat is otherwise occupied for a few days so I took the plunge. What I am talking about is of course packaging KDE Gear 26.04.0 for Slackware. The latest release of Applications and KDEPIM is nicknamed the "KDE at 30" edition because KDE is around for 30 years already (!).

  24. #XLibre is international. In this screen running on Plamo Linux, a Japanese #Slackware fork. Also featuring a Lenovo ThinkPad X260 with Intel HD Graphics 520, Linux 6.12.21, and #Xfce 4.20.

  25. New KDE Frameworks and Plasma packages

KDE just announced the KDE Frameworks 6.25.0, and earlier this week they came with Plasma 6.6.4. I built the packages for those new releases - targeting Slackware -current of course. Along with these updates I also refreshed KleverNotes, Krita, Kstars and Okteta to their latest versions. You can find the packages in my 'ktown' repository...

  26. Slackware Cloud Server Series, Episode 11: Jukebox Audio Streaming

I am an avid music lover. My tastes are eclectic; I enjoy electronic, industrial, punk, new wave, reggae and dub but also baroque and classical music. I used to tape my own music cassettes when I was young, sharing my mixes with friends. I have hundreds of vinyl albums and at many more compact discs. But technology kept evolving and I switched to MP3 files…

  27. I got #Slackware 15 on a #ThinkCentre M73 SFF (i3-4160 with 4GiB and an SSD), no sweat.

Then installed #OpenBSD on it just fine, it's running now.

However, #NetBSD fails on "no root devices" or similar and #FreeBSD, which is what i'd really like to install due to native #ZFS, just freezes on the boot screen.

These are all ISOs on the same Ventoy USB disk.

    Boosts and suggestions appreciated.

  28. @nazokiyoubinbou
#Slackware, @Devuan, and #Antix are free by design.
#Gentoo, to me, had the best approach: gives you choice of init system.

A bit of a ranty blog today.

I really want to write software that's actually good.

Increasingly, I believe the trick to doing this isn't #types, or #proglang , or formal methods, or #agile, or #XP, or #TDD, or any other fancy technique, process, or technology. It's Care.

And the reason most software still sucks? It's not stupidity, and it's not because everyone else has been duped by the "wrong" development ideology (waterfall, formal methods, agile, etc). It's the Market.

Here's what #openbsd , #slackware, and #emacs are teaching me about taking the time to work on what matters.

  34. KDE 6_26.03 for Slackware-current

Yesterday evening, KDE released their Frameworks 6.24.0 and taking advantage of the moment and even before morning coffee, I uploaded the Slackware packages for these new Frameworks.

Alongside with these Frameworks, I built a package for the third Beta of Krita 6.0.0 – the KDE drawing tool will finally be available as a Qt6 based application with proper Wayland support.

  35. @grahamperrin @b0rk

If either of you are running #Slackware there's a package build for it here:

    https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/system/qman/

If nothing else you can easily examine the build script and fashion one for your distro.

Or you can install it with a single command in one fell swoop with sbopkg

    Enjoy!

  36. Anyone for the outdatedness of Slackware?
My Slackware Tilers setup runs Sway, with the nwg-shell. And Mangowc with Noctalia. And Niri with Dank. Hyprland is available, but not installed. And Slackware Current. All from one iso and repository by @jloc0 . Smart thing: package sets are linked by symbolic links. Type "slackpkg install dank" and you'll see all related packages before they're pulled in. Way less 'dependency hell'. And very much up to date 😄 Thanks Jay!

  37. Since I wiped my main workstation/gaming PC the other day in a bout of frustration with, well, everything, I’ve been having fun OS-hopping. I have a fallback workstation that I can use for work purposes and to get me by while I’m noodling around in my main rig. My initial intention was to run OpenBSD for a few weeks to see the state of things on the desktop (I have a few devices running OpenBSD but all headless) but I ran into a weird USB storage bug. Just to see if it’s a hardware thing or an OS thing, I tried FreeBSD 15 and it was even worse.

I noticed in #slackware current gkrellm was upgraded to the new version.

So, with me being on #slackware 15.0, I grabbed the current source for the new gkrellm from slackware.osuosl.org.

I compiled and upgraded it and the new version runs great on #slackware 15.0
