I have finally taken some time with #Hyprland to make-shift a resemblance of my usual desktop session.

Apps I always start after logon are starting in specific window positions and they are also launching on specific workspaces.

Sounds easy, but you actually need to read some to get it right...😂

I mean as much as I've seen, it's simply way too ugly looking compared to DankLinux Suite and Noctalia Shell. It's always funny to see the techbros creating a dotfiles repo that does what stow does but ... One by one like a caveman (coz that's what the AI planned)

Ok, in my sandbox machine I'm slowly replacing my all inclusive #omarchy setup with a #nixos #hyprland #quickshell self-tailored alternative.

Won't lie. It's like moving from being the guest at a 2-star meal to being the cook for 15 people coming for dinner at your place. So it's fun and messy, but also rewarding somehow.

I'm now calling this 2026 the year of #linux just because I hope I get to the end of my setup by December 31st. 😢

So... for the past couple days I have been experimenting with #Hyprland and to be honest - I don't really know how to express my feelings so I would just... share some thoughts.

Why did I even decide to try it?
I saw on the Internet that it exists, couple of my friends told me to at least try it... so I installed it.

Was I struggling?
Of course I was! At first I wasn't able to understand how do I find myself in this and what's necessary in order for it to work. Then I saw that using this is about 95% with keyboard and some key configs.

Did I want to uninstall?
At first yes because I was enraged that I wasn't able to jump between apps using alt-tab/mouse anymore but I got used to that style of "jumping".

Where is it installed nowadays and will I ever install it anywhere else?
So far it is installed only on my main PC cuz it has enough RAM to work without lagging but if I ever buy myself a laptop with => 8GB of RAM, I will install Hyprland on that device as well.

What are the next steps?
I want to learn visual config cuz installing pre-made configs will revert what I had set up to the factory settings.

But now...

Przez ostatnie kilka dni bawiłem się w coś co się zwie #Hyprland i szczerze mówiąc - nie wiem jak do końca mam opisać swoje odczucia więc się lepiej rozpiszę.

Czemu w ogóle postanowiłem się w to zabawić?
Zobaczyłem na internetach że jest coś takiego, kilkoro znajomych zachęciło mnie żebym chociaż spróbował i zobaczył z czym to się je... więc zainstalowałem.

Czy były problemy?
Ależ oczywiście! Na początku nie mogłem zrozumieć tego jak się nawiguje i w ogóle co jest potrzebne żeby to jako tako działało. Później dopiero dostrzegłem że nawigacja odbywa się w 95% za pomocą klawiatury przy użyciu kombinacji klawiszy.

Czy chciałem odinstalować?
Na początku tak bo mnie frustrowało to że do skakania po programach nie mogę już używać myszki/alt-taba ale z czasem przywykłem do tego typu nawigacji.

Gdzie teraz mam to zainstalowane i czy kiedykolwiek będę wgrywał to gdzie indziej?
Na razie mam to tylko na głównym PC bo tylko tam mam odpowiednio sporą pamięć RAM żeby mi działało bez zarzutów ale jeżeli kupię sobie kiedyś jakiegoś używanego laptopa z => 8GB pamięci RAM to i tam będzie Hyprland.

Co planuję dalej z tym?
Chcę się nauczyć konfiguracji wizualnej ponieważ wgranie już gotowych plików cofnie to co zrobiłem do wartości domyślnej.

I think anyone that has followed me or even been adjacent to anything I've said is aware that I have kind of a weird relationship with the UX of modern computers - I by far prefer terminal interfaces, and would be perfectly happy if the mouse were an invention left in the distant past.  For a while I used #gnome, then switched to #hyprland.  Neither was inherently bad (and I got pretty used to the hyperland way of doing things, especially the configurability), but neither particularly worked the way I think.  In years past I used to enjoy #xfce, but no wayland support yet.

I spent a couple of weeks trying random window managers / compositors, but none really sat well with me - so I wound up rolling my own.  riverwm recently split their compositor out from the 'desktop environment', so I was able to build on that.  So now I have a #tag based interface (windows are tagged with 1 or more labels; the display shows label groups) that is almost completely keyboard driven.  There's still some rough edges, especially around focus stealing and tag switching latency, but it's the 1 computer thing that I've done lately that I actually enjoyed.

I've been waiting on Ubuntu 26.04, but once I've installed that I think I'm gonna get into #ricing! (#Hyprland looks like it wasn't easily usable on 24.04, but should be better on 26.04)

@codeDude There sure are caveats with Niri, like when sometimes I open a window at an end of a scroll and get it lost. Or when I forget that a window is open some few workspace down and fews scrolls right. But the advantages, I think, makes up for it.
Btw, I used to be on #Hyprland before trying out #Niri

@codeDude I had the same impression of #Niri at first. But I daily drived it for a while and then I couldn't go back to normal tiling wms.
Niri always opens a window in ones preferred size. When #Hyprland (or any most tiling wms) opens a window, the size depends on what one already has on screen.
On Niri, opening another window does not resize the existing window, on hyprland it does.

I've tested #sway #niri and now #hyprland and at the end I choosed Hyprland as my default tilling window manager and sway for my old machine, simple I love the #i3 experience so sway was my default one but the animation and the fact that with a couple of minutes I can reproduce the i3 experience in hyprland I've choosed hyprland. Niri experience is interesant but it's not for me, this infinite scroll is anoying for me at the end.

What are good alternatives to #hyprland on #wayland ?

I value easy but flexible customisation, allowing to chain many actions in one shortcut, having submaps (aka key chords), fully controlling, focusing and moving spaces around. the eye candy of hyprland is very nice and a plus, but I could forfeit it.

One option would be to move back to qtile, which ticks the boxes but was made unnecessary hard to master due to lacking documentation and frequent breaking changes (years ago).

I have always liked the look/feel of hyprland/quickshell implementations, but never had the patience to debug, configure and tweak them.

However, I decided to give it another try using OpenCode to set up my dot files and do the configuration (and debugging!)

For some people the configuration is the fun of hyprland, but I could never get into it. Outsourcing it to AI makes it a lot more enjoyable.
