  1. Question – what OS should I install?

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e with only 2 cores, 4 threads, and 4 GB of RAM. I'm looking for OS recommendations that would be suitable for this machine.

I'm considering Debian, possibly as a command-line installation, to see if I could manage without a GUI. I've also thought about something more exotic like OpenBSD. Regardless, I'd mainly like to use this machine as a portable typewriter. Importantly, I need TTS (text-to-speech) because of my personal accessibility needs—a screen reader is essential.

I enjoy experimenting with distros and learning through hands-on experience.

Any advise and tips are welcome!

  6. Officially Linux or other strictly open source licensed #operatingsystems are except from os verification laws the u.s. At least in California.

So as a User of tech you can just use that and never have to age verify at the os level.

However this doesn't yet get a clear answer for federated mastodon or other #activitypub services. There's still uncertainty.

But due to the decentralized nature you can as a user can just pick a specific hosted location whether a specific u.s state or a country that might not legally require an age verification.

  7. macOS is so frequently warning me that this or that app I launch will not be functional when Apple sunsets Rosetta 2 and its Ahead-Of-Time compilation, providing x86-64 -> ARM translation in macOS Golden Gate.

On the one hand, yes, this is a hard driver to get developers to update their app to native and, as such, provide higher performance and peak integration into the latest OS.

On the other hand...I've ridden this CPU platform switch train on the Mac long enough (having been here for every one that's happened), that I know many "little" apps that aren't huge moneymakers or maybe aren't any longer maintained will just cease to exist in on the modern Mac platform when this happens, and this saddens me greatly. Some of these apps I use often, even daily.

I neither look forward to nor praise this coming move from Apple.

  10. Hi everyone! 👋 I know it's been a while since I was last here, but I had a very specific reason for it. I've spent the last few months with my small team intensely developing a project I mentioned to you once before. Every moment of my inactivity here was simply coding, designing the architecture, and endlessly solving problems :heart_cybre:

Today, I am proud to announce - LibreConnect has moved past the phase of vague plans and become a fully functional app! :flan_hurrah:

We managed to deliver what was absolutely most important to us - an ecosystem connecting your 💻 computer and 📱 smartphone that respects your privacy 100%. Zero external clouds and hidden telemetry. Everything is based exclusively on a direct P2P connection within your local network and strong E2E encryption 🔐

So, what can our app actually do?
    - Virtual camera and microphone from your phone :blobcatcamera:
    - Mobile device file manager right from your PC 📁
    - Notification and clipboard synchronization 📋
    - Receiving and sending SMS/MMS from your computer 💬
    - Two-way media playback control 🎵
    - Remote keyboard and presentation control from your phone :ablobcatbongokeyboard:
    - Finding your phone by triggering a loud alarm (overriding silent mode) 🚨
    - And a few other minor conveniences :sparkles_fiery:

We also made sure the project is truly cross-platform. LibreConnect runs natively on :linux: Linux, :apple_inc: macOS, :windows: Windows, and :robot_3: Android. It's worth mentioning that the app isn't limited to just x86_64 architecture - we support ARM64 as well! To make updates easier, we've set up our own F-Droid repository, along with native packages for Linux package managers (APT, DNF, Pacman) :fdroid: :archlinux:

The code is 100% open-source under the GNU GPL v3.0 license :github: However, I have to be honest - the project is still very young. The app is highly usable, but it still requires optimization, might have some silly bugs, and can occasionally be unstable 🐛

That's why we need you so much right now. For the continued development of this app to make any sense, we need a small but engaged user base. I encourage you to install it, test it out, and report bugs, and for those interested - to join the project as contributors (you'll find a CONTRIBUTING.md in the repo) 🤝

If you like our vision, leaving a star ⭐ on our GitHub repository is the form of support we would appreciate the most. It's these stars that will allow us to take the project out into the world! Because of this, for the next few days, my activity here will focus mainly on promoting the app and its features - we need your help to build the right momentum. Thank you in advance for your support! :blobheartcat:
