Question – what OS should I install?
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e with only 2 cores, 4 threads, and 4 GB of RAM. I'm looking for OS recommendations that would be suitable for this machine.
I'm considering Debian, possibly as a command-line installation, to see if I could manage without a GUI. I've also thought about something more exotic like OpenBSD. Regardless, I'd mainly like to use this machine as a portable typewriter. Importantly, I need TTS (text-to-speech) because of my personal accessibility needs—a screen reader is essential.
I enjoy experimenting with distros and learning through hands-on experience.
Any advise and tips are welcome!

Hi everyone! 👋 I know it's been a while since I was last here, but I had a very specific reason for it. I've spent the last few months with my small team intensely developing a project I mentioned to you once before. Every moment of my inactivity here was simply coding, designing the architecture, and endlessly solving problems :heart_cybre:
Today, I am proud to announce - LibreConnect has moved past the phase of vague plans and become a fully functional app! :flan_hurrah:
We managed to deliver what was absolutely most important to us - an ecosystem connecting your 💻 computer and 📱 smartphone that respects your privacy 100%. Zero external clouds and hidden telemetry. Everything is based exclusively on a direct P2P connection within your local network and strong E2E encryption 🔐
So, what can our app actually do?
- Virtual camera and microphone from your phone :blobcatcamera:
- Mobile device file manager right from your PC 📁
- Notification and clipboard synchronization 📋
- Receiving and sending SMS/MMS from your computer 💬
- Two-way media playback control 🎵
- Remote keyboard and presentation control from your phone :ablobcatbongokeyboard:
- Finding your phone by triggering a loud alarm (overriding silent mode) 🚨
- And a few other minor conveniences :sparkles_fiery:We also made sure the project is truly cross-platform. LibreConnect runs natively on :linux: Linux, :apple_inc: macOS, :windows: Windows, and :robot_3: Android. It's worth mentioning that the app isn't limited to just x86_64 architecture - we support ARM64 as well! To make updates easier, we've set up our own F-Droid repository, along with native packages for Linux package managers (APT, DNF, Pacman) :fdroid: :archlinux:
The code is 100% open-source under the GNU GPL v3.0 license :github: However, I have to be honest - the project is still very young. The app is highly usable, but it still requires optimization, might have some silly bugs, and can occasionally be unstable 🐛
That's why we need you so much right now. For the continued development of this app to make any sense, we need a small but engaged user base. I encourage you to install it, test it out, and report bugs, and for those interested - to join the project as contributors (you'll find a CONTRIBUTING.md in the repo) 🤝
If you like our vision, leaving a star ⭐ on our GitHub repository is the form of support we would appreciate the most. It's these stars that will allow us to take the project out into the world! Because of this, for the next few days, my activity here will focus mainly on promoting the app and its features - we need your help to build the right momentum. Thank you in advance for your support! :blobheartcat:

Wenn das wirklich kommt, sehe ich wirklich gar keinen Grund mehr, warum man privat Windows nutzen sollte, oder geschweige denn es rechtfertigen kann.

I will soon license #Arikoto under the NCSA/University of Illinois Open Source License.
Waiting for people in the Discord server to agree on the license. It seems positive so far. Can anyone here also tell me this is a good idea?
For anyone who doesn't know what Arikoto is, it's my #OSDev project I've been working on since January 2025 and growing steadily.

Look up from your phone, watch, PC, whatever you’re reading this on.
Yep, over there. That’s the Arikoto headquarters. Over there too. I work on Arikoto, wherever I want, whenever I want. The universe is my headquarters.

The #Arikoto #OSDev project is now officially on #Codeberg:
https://codeberg.org/NerdNextDoor/arikotoThe old #GitHub repo will serve as a manual redirect to the new repo and hosting for https://arikoto.nerdnextdoor.net. The master branch has been deleted from the GitHub repo.

EDIT: The move has been completed! https://codeberg.org/NerdNextDoor/arikoto
I have an update about the #Arikoto #OS codebase.
I am planning to move Arikoto from #GitHub to #Codeberg at some point. (Possibly along with some other projects)
I hopefully plan to do this by the end of 2025, no promises.
Please boost this post so others know about the move.

Friend of mine in the #Arikoto #OSDev #Discord server just asked me:
“CPU hotplugging support when?”
We don’t even have userspace yet nor does paging work properly.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN CPU HOTPLUGGING SUPPORT WHEN???

#Arikoto now has basic paging and virtual memory management along with a bunch of other changes, reaching over 4.3K lines of code!
Find it on #GitHub:

#Kuroko without an #OperatingSystem
We have truly reached the limits of Kuroko now.
This isn’t even my project, I don’t know why I’m even making it run on different things.
-
#Arikoto now has a website. I don't know why I did this but I did.
-
Tried to search up my own #OS, #Arikoto, on some search engines today.
What I find funny is that when you type just Arikoto into #DuckDuckGo or any other search engine, you get some anime character from some anime I've never heard of.
You actually have to type Arikoto OS or Arikoto #Kernel, or Arikoto #GitHub to find it.
Even then, that anime will still pop up a lot in search results. Hilarious!
Here's a direct link:

#Arikoto now has a #Zed channel for communications!
https://zed.dev/channel/Arikoto-19596
Other forms of communication will be set up eventually.
-
#Arikoto now has a cool "logo", Japanese (what I believe to be) Hiragana version of the name in the readme (correct me if I'm wrong), a roadmap in the VFS tests instead of a simple welcome, and increased VFS limits!
(Doesn't show on my system properly but yeah you get the point)
