One thing Linux (and esp. #NixOS) needs is a simple wrapper script that starts random executables in a container but with GUI access and with the ability to open files through a portal.
Wasn't #flatpack supposed to do something like that?
Maybe I should start looking into how to build my own ones. And then write a small wrapper script or something.
basically I want to double click random binaries and them to just start (partially) isolated. Similar to e.g. Android Apps.

You really have to appreciate the part in IKEA's instructions where they remind you to have a friend help you smash it to pieces.

Tried to install a program from #flatpack today. 3Gb on disk. Struggled for a few minutes trying to get the scroll work properly. Gave up and installed a native app instead, 5Mb on disk.
At the moment out of box flatpack experience is odd, at least for uninitiated.
I get that they are shipping whole "works on my machine" to users, but I have my own style, font, control, etc preferences. Plus having to type the whole abomination on the command line is meh.
Will try again next year :)

Oh great, another groundbreaking revelation: someone ranked #IKEA products by how fast you can lose your #sanity assembling them. 🙄🔧 As if we needed a reminder that buying flat-pack #furniture is akin to enrolling in a #DIY obstacle course. Just what the internet was missing—a non-affiliated fan club keeping score! 🎉

I’ve been after a smallish chair side table for ages & struggled to find what I wanted.
I’ve just finished putting this together & it’s not fancy, but it also wasn’t expensive. I’m happy with it anyway. Perfect height & extra room underneath. It’ll do 😁. The only thing left over is the allen key, so I did it correctly. #FlatPack. -

Selbst hier schon gelesen.

Shame about the deadpan narration, but this #FlexiArch system is very elegant engineering.
It is a clever new way of building pretty and durable #arch #bridges using a #flatpack system. (IKEA victims, relax: no screws or bolts involved).
FlexiArch was invented by Prof #AdrianLong of #QUB, who was also the father-in-law of #NorthernIreland's Alliance Party leader #NaomiLong ... who is herself an engineer.

Perhaps it is time that I do some more distro-hopping. Although I thoroughly enjoy using Linux Mint, this is the second time in the past week that I've wanted a more recent release of some of the software I use than what is in Mint's repositories. First, it was the latest version of LibreOffice. I was able to switch to the Flatpack version without issue. Now, I find myself wanting to use the latest release of wine to run some windows-only software that I use for my job.

Got #GeforceNow via #Flatpack running on @CachyOS using https://gist.github.com/Edu4rdSHL/7a477bad90379e638d544252583d37f5.
Then I can launch the app on the dedicated GPU using __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia flatpak run com.nvidia.geforcenow
My issue is that the XBOX 360 (bluetooth) buttons' mapping seems to be correct on https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad but it's completely messed up in the games.
I tried to deactivate the Steam Input option but it doesn't help.

Is installing a 10MB-large software really going to take 3.6GB with flatpack?
If no, there's something that needs to be done with the software manager (here in Mint) to not confuse users.
If yes, just whoa. -

🛋️📚 Strap in for the ultimate snooze-fest as we dive into seven decades of furniture fluff from a Swedish flat-pack behemoth! Who knew assembling a time machine could be as thrilling as deciphering an Allen wrench manual? 😂💤

"Mon scanner ne marche pas"
Moi : installe le driver du scanner, et... Lance simple-scan.

Dear https://zoom.us, I appreciate you having a #Zoom client package that works on #Linux, that's mighty nice of you as I need that software to run for me and I appreciate it being native in my chosen OS. However, if you're gonna update the software really, really, really often (like you're doing these days) could you just take that one extra step and stop making me manually download and install a .deb file for every update? You can choose from multiple other options, like a #Flatpack, or an #Aptitude compatible solution.
Not to be ungrateful, but, well, seriously...

I did check for a #Librewolf update too but there doesn't seem to be one yet. (136.02 installed.) So still stuck with problem font handling.
Also checked again to see if a #flatpack version was available, but flatpack.org still has a dodgy ssl certificate as viewed from Librewolf and doesn't show up at all in Firefox (perhaps due to scripting being off, not sure). Either way ... very far from encouraging. 🙄

#AskFedi #flatpack #furniture
I've a 17 year old low-line entertainment unit and one of the plastic supports has shorn off while I was cleaning. There is a very tiny amount of it sticking out, but not enough for me to get a grip with pliers. How can I get it out? It's a fairly tight fit, as in you would twist it slightly as you pushed it in to go in easier. I'd prefer to not have to drill a new hole. All I can think of is maybe try to glue something to it and then try to pull it out? -

Backing up my home folder in the Crostini Linux container on my Chromebook. I'd not been paying attention to how much space flatpack has been consuming. That was a surprise 🙀
I'll be doing some pruning after this.

AlexanderVanhee/Gradia: Make your screenshots ready for all - On social media, it's often hard to control how your images appear to others. Transparent or oddly sized images—like #screenshots—often don't display well. Fixing these issues can feel like more trouble than it's worth.
#Gradia aims to alleviate that problem by allowing you to quickly edit images t…

#Flatpack are showing Slade in Flame at the #MAC in a couple of weeks but it's sold out dammit.
I saw it on telly once in the nineties, it's a gritty gangster movie with pop songs and the band and supporting cast including Tom Conti are brilliant.
I am not a fish finger.
