@ferret If you have `aptitude` installed, you can search on the command line with

aptitude search "?installed ?depends(chromium|firefox|www-browser)"
aptitude search "?installed ?recommends(chromium|firefox|www-browser)"

(It can be done in one command, but the combination of "and"s and "or"s makes it awkward)

Or you can use the #aptitude TUI (run `aptitude` without options) to browse the dependency trees. `?` for help, `q` to quit.

I was tired of not being able to install with apt the apps I would build, so I created a #rustlang app that makes a virtual apt repository over #github releases.
It's not fresh yet, but it works. I can update the app itself, using apt. It works also for #opentelemetrycollector.
Next step, handling signatures and improving configuration and performance.

Dear https://zoom.us, I appreciate you having a #Zoom client package that works on #Linux, that's mighty nice of you as I need that software to run for me and I appreciate it being native in my chosen OS. However, if you're gonna update the software really, really, really often (like you're doing these days) could you just take that one extra step and stop making me manually download and install a .deb file for every update? You can choose from multiple other options, like a #Flatpack, or an #Aptitude compatible solution.

Not to be ungrateful, but, well, seriously...

What is the easiest way to find out why #package updates are held back on #debian #testing? #apt #apt-get and #aptitude show different results when trying to upgrade...of course its my fault, but in order to fix the issue and be sure my device can properly reboot, I want to fix any dependency issue.

An anti-climatic resolution:

apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

and all is well!

I reviewed the lists of packages to remove, to check there was nothing too critical, before confirming.

And that's all it took.

Lesson learned: #apt is indeed a more powerful tool than #aptitude.

On a #Debian machine [0], packages are all currently installed correctly and working.

But #APT and #dpkg data has been lost; all of '/var/lib/apt/', '/var/lib/dpkg/', '/var/lib/aptitude/', '/var/cache/apt/' have been deleted.

This means that every actually-installed package is, as far as #Aptitude is concerned, not installed.

How can I get APT (and Aptitude) to re-populate its database so the status is correct for every one?

[0]: Debian "trixie" (current "testing"), if it matters.

Hatte gestern die Idee, heute 'ne längere Radtour zu machen. Konnte mich gestern aber endlich dazu aufraffen meinen Raspi 2 mit #Debian Sid zu flicken, damit ich mir das nicht mehr ganz neue #Xymon 4.4α1 mit #IPv6 und #TLS und 'n RC-Bug in #Aptitude genauer anschauen kann. Wurde wegen der ganzen t64-Migration aber spät, sodass ich heute nicht vor 16 Uhr aus den Federn kam. Dummerweise ist der Raspi gestern noch bei einer Frage hängen geblieben. D.h. ich schwinge mich doch noch kurz aufs Velo. 👋

Hi Debian 12 users, I have an installation question :

Debian 12 activates the non-free-firmware component for apt by default. However, nvidia drivers (which, sadly, I need) are still packaged in the non-free component, which is not activated by default. In a netinst iso, is there any way to control which components are added to the sources.list ?
