  1. RE: blog.gillesdutilh.com/2026/05/

I wrote a blog post where I distinguish *mutual follows* from *friends* and raise the question: which platforms in the #Fediverse should offer friendships? Would this fit Mastodon? Only #Friendica? Some flavor of #Bonfire?

  2. just discovered another super interesting and needed work done by @[email protected] and @[email protected] platform.coop/blog/toward-wo...

"Aiming to shift control of delivery work away from a single entity, OpenCourier is a protocol that defines data formatting and communication across a decentralized network of delivery platforms, couriers, and service requesters. Broadly, we aim to enable an ecosystem (Fig. 1) that centers community-owned delivery platforms, where workers — who we refer to as couriers, given their work providing delivery services — cooperatively manage the platform they are a part of.

    我在bonfre测试实例的账户:campground.bonfire.cafe/@k8u

    6. 有功能:圈子(但是人太少了也没开启联邦,不好测试,(官方说是圈子是lists of people(例如,“本地朋友”、“团队”、“互助团队”)。

    1. Add an external account这里好像有bug?

    这里是托管方式:docs.bonfirenetworks.org/deplo
    有兴趣的可以注册实例,开放注册:campground.bonfire.cafe
    官方网站:bonfirenetworks.org

  15. CW: How the various Fediverse server applications are effectively tiered; CW: long (over 2,400 characters), Fediverse meta, Fediverse-beyond-Mastodon meta, Twitter mentioned, Facebook mentioned, Instagram mentioned, YouTube mentioned, TikTok mentioned, Reddit mentioned
We have a five-class Fediverse nowadays.

First class: Mastodon. It's what everyone knows (everyone outside of Lemmy at least). It's what more Mastodon users than not take for the one and only Fediverse and ActivityPub gold standard (while literally nobody outside of Mastodon does, go figure). And it's the only Fediverse server application which many Fedizens take for the entire Fediverse. (Lemmings don't refer to Lemmy as the Fediverse, although many are still completely unaware that Lemmy is connected to anything else.)

Second class: the stuff that looks like add-ons glued onto Mastodon to enhance Mastodon. Pixelfed, an Instagram clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. PeerTube, a YouTube clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. Loops, a TikTok clone glued to the Twitter clone as an add-on. WordPress, a blogging engine and content management system eventually glued to the Twitter clone. I guess you get the idea.

It's only up to the second class that Fediverse server software is generally recognised and accepted from the usual Mastodon-centric point of view.

Third class: other halfway well-known "clones" of or replacements for corporate online platforms that do not look like they're glued onto Mastodon as add-ons. This is limited to the Threadiverse (Lemmy, what's left of /kbin, Mbin, PieFed) as Reddit replacements and Friendica as "the" Facebook replacement.

Fourth class: anything that doesn't fall into the first three classes, but that has enough publicity. Like Bonfire and WriteFreely. Also, minimalist stuff for self-hosters like GoToSocial and snac. Hubzilla is ever so barely teetering on this class, if at all.

Basically, it's only up to the fourth class that Fediverse server software is known at all.

Finally, fifth class: the whole rest. I mean, why is Mastodon known as "the" Twitter alternative in the Fediverse if there are loads of others that are better, more powerful, sometimes even closer to Twitter in certain features? Why is Friendica known as "the" Facebook alternative in the Fediverse if Friendica's own creator has built a whole family tree of successors that outclass Friendica in various ways?

  26. ‘Shameful’ that bonfire with migrant effigies was allowed to go ahead (Independent, 2025-07-11)

    independent.co.uk/news/uk/home
    ———

    >> There has been widespread condemnation from politicians and church leaders to the display on the bonfire in Moygashel, Co Tyrone, which was set alight on Thursday night.

    >> The boat on top of the pyre contained more than a dozen life-sized mannequins wearing life jackets, while below it were placards saying “stop the boats” and “veterans before refugees”.

    >> [Amnesty] International’s Northern Ireland director Patrick Corrigan said: “It is shameful that the authorities allowed this despicable display of hate to go ahead.

    >> Earlier this week, prominent loyalist activist Jamie Bryson said the #bonfire was a form of “artistic protest”.

    bonfirenetworks.org/posts/bonf

Well, IMO scientists need a decentralized reviewing but centralized reference system.
Abolish the current methods of private journals publishing and create The Network.
We have the infrastructure to build upon:
    #Noosphere + #bonfire + @ResearchEquals
As scientists we need -just- to review and be reviewed. No journals, no open or closed access research etc. Thus we need a "scientific" network of research which will be our actual knowledge hub.

  30. @open_science
🌍 Calling all #scientists #professors #PIs #teamleaders #PhDs #phD passionate about shaping the future of research! I am looking forward to form a scientific collective to initiate a more transparent way to do research, as we can work together to break barriers, share knowledge, and empower global scientific progress. 🧪🔬🚀
We will use a new platform #bonfire to lead this change!
    Let's innovate 🌱🔍🤝 #ResearchForAll #openscience #opensource

  31. @jerry

Is figuring out how to integrate #ValueFlows (VF) into instances using #ActivityPub on the #Fediverse development list somewhere?

You are definitely well-connected to the underpinnings of the Fediverse and probably know about planned direction.

Are there plans to make funding all the pieces of the Fediverse (bw, hw, sw, labor) more automatic and integrated into the signup?

I give funds to 2 instances, an infosec person, and ValueFlows dev for a total of $40.35/mo. PayPal and Patreon were easy to set up. It was really hard to figure out how to fund what I think is a critical piece of ensuring longevity of the Fedi-- distributing funds within. The #Bonfire instance gave me the link to VF. Really knowledgeable, involved people are working on VF. I'm not a Dev, but docs there look like it could serve Fedi fund distribution. hrea.io/

Are there other plans for making funding better integrated into the Fedi? IMO, systematic financing is the weakest link to a sustainable Fediverse.

  32. @mastodonmigration @loshmi
    2/3

Spent my first few days around here trying to figure out a fair share "#subscription". Very few provide an idea of how much would help. sfba.social said about $1000/mo in cost to sustain service (excluding labor). Set up my $10.35/mo for ecosystem infrastructure there.

Knowing an ecosystem needs an immune system, decided to Patreon an infosec person on fedia.io at $10/mo.

An ecosystem also needs a way to move the energy source around the system. Spent some time trying to find where that might be in the #Fediverse. Patreon, Kofi and et al. seem to be the most prominent means at the moment. Found #Bonfire whose protocol includes the #ValueFlows vocabulary. AFAIK, this is closest to an energy transport system for the Fediverse. Maybe there are other vocabularies for creating a circulatory system in the Fediverse.

forum.holochain.org/ seems to be where deployments of ValueFlows are being worked (moved to #discord). Exploring more before setting up a subscription.
