First of all, that looks like an excellent chair. Mine cost a bit over $80, has silly pillows for lumbar support, leans back ridiculously far, and is so comfortable to nap in, I almost prefer it to a bed - sometimes I do. How much is that beauty with the discount?

Ce thriller français reprend en quelque sorte le thème d’un précédent, Il était deux fois, chroniqué sur ce blog. Même disparition de la fille de 17 ans, même quête d’un père qui ne lâche rien, même univers très glauque d’« artistes » qui œuvrent sur les corps vivants.

Cette fois, le lecteur fera connaissance de six femmes, Julie la kidnappée, Véra la psychiatre, Ariane l’artiste de labyrinthes, Lysine la journaliste, Sophie la romancière – sans compter la septième tout à la fin, Camille, policière. Toutes soumises à des fugues dissociatives et à la paramnésie de certitude. Intéressant concept, qui fait dire bien des inepties aux patients traités par les psy. «Le cerveau humain peut déployer les plus incroyables stratagèmes pour protéger l’esprit. Il s’adapte sans cesse, se reconstruit sur ses ruines… Il est même capable de se piéger lui-même. De faire passer des souvenirs inventés pour réels. De nous persuader, par exemple, que nous avons été agressés à la cantine quand nous étions collégiens, même si cela ne s’est jamais produit » p.403. D’où la méfiance légitime de la justice pour les « viols » dénoncés trente ans après.

Le premier chapitre est identique au dernier chapitre, signe que l’on a fait le tour du labyrinthe. Une fille kidnappée a été retenue par son ravisseur, Caleb Traskman, un écrivain de thriller célèbre, dont la particularité est de décrire des viols, des tortures, et des horreurs. Un peu le monde de Franck Thilliez, avouons-le. L’époque contemporaine exige la surenchère dans la violence. Elle aime ça. Les lecteurs aussi, semble-t-il, puisque Franck Tilliez a énormément de succès. J’en suis étonné, dans la mesure où la majorité des lecteurs sont des lectrices… Fascination pour le bad boy ? Jouer à se faire peur par des fantasmes de viols et de tortures à répétition ? Pour ma part, je trouve cet univers très glauque et ne relit pas ce genre de roman, bien qu’il soit ici très bien construits. Nous sommes dans le cliché : évidemment une femme, et évidemment raptée par un homme, qui est évidemment pervers narcissique, et assouvit évidemment toutes ses pulsions dans une cave. En invitant ses copains, amateurs de sensations fortes – et (clin d’œil bienvenu contre les préjugés) pas seulement des mâles.

Il se trouve qu’ici, la kidnappée fait place à la journaliste indépendante, qui enquête sur la violence dans l’art contemporain. Elle découvre un montage de scènes d’ultra-violence sadique perpétrée sur une femme nue par une bande de bourgeois déguisés de têtes de porcs, dans une bacchanale orgiaque où tout est permis. Il s’agit d’aktion, avec un k comme en allemand. Ce genre d’art contemporain confine au nihilisme. Il perce et fouaille la chair jusqu’à l’annihiler J’y vois, pour ma part, une perversion de la sainte horreur chrétienne pour la chair, horreur qui est d’ailleurs celle de toutes les religions du Livre. La chair est matière et non esprit, elle ne participe donc pas de Dieu, et peut donc être méprisée, souillée, niée. D’où l’impasse de ce genre d’art contemporain qui tente d’aller jusqu’au bout. « Voici Abergel (…). Il s’est volontairement tiré une balle dans le crâne l’année dernière, devant des appareils photo à déclenchement automatique et à très haute capacité d’obturation qui ont immortalisé chaque milliseconde de son suicide. Il signe ici son ultime série et, vous vous en doutez, la plus radicale : Dans la tête de l’artiste. – Vous considérez ça comme de l’art ? Vous plaisantez, n’est-ce pas ? – Je suis on ne peut plus sérieux. Abergel est allé aussi loin qu’un artiste peut aller dans le dévouement à sa discipline. Les originaux de ces clichés valent aujourd’hui une fortune sur le marché… » p.252.

La journaliste enquête, et découvre une bobine de film sous la forme d’un montage d’atrocités. Elle tente de remonter jusqu’à son auteur, Jérémy Théobald, un artiste qui vit dans une caravane installée dans une casse auto proche de Paris. L’artiste est un marginal tatoué et piercé qui vit torse nu sous un blouson de cuir et qui vend très cher ses photographies de corps éviscérés et ses snuff movies où de réelles personnes (en général jeunes femmes ou enfants) sont massacrées en direct pendant des heures par une bande de sauvages nus. Il y a un public pour cela, analogue aux casseurs après les matchs de foot. Il s’agit toujours d’aller jusqu’au bout de soi, de lâcher ses pulsions primaires, sans plus aucune limite. Encourager ce genre de déviance, même sous la forme d’un thriller, est pour moi immoral. Mais une fois encore, cela plaît.

Je laisse au lecteur avide de ce genre de sensation la lecture de ce livre, fort bien fait et haletant en chapitres courts qui se chevauchent d’un personnage à l’autre. La fin est étonnante, bien qu’elle répète le début, mais nous n’en avions pas conscience.
