  1. View from the rear balcony of our train as we cross the mighty Murray river – the racing waters almost doing a brimmer – at Tocumwal, Bangerang lands, on the 1895 centre-lift bridge. The bridge carried both trains and road traffic until 1987, so it is no. 4 in our count of dual road-rail bridges!
I wonder when the centre span was last lifted. That would have been a sight to behold!

  2. Pepper does remarkably well trodding upon cracked acorns in Minnehaha Park. Barred from crossing, we had our picnic instead on a bench near the western end of the bridge.

  3. Vanishing point.

They've thrown chain-link fences across both ends of the old bridge to the Veterans Home in south Minneapolis, barring two- and four-footed walkers and rollers from the venerable structure.

As borrowed dog Pepper and I will be "done rovin'" by the time they rebuild it—if they do—the move "cur-tails" our occasional circuits from Minnehaha Falls park to the Wabun Picnic Grounds.

The alternative is to go up and around the Abandoned Falls and to skirt the glen to the north and east.

Sorry to see another truss bridge going away. We're nonplussed and sad. But nothing lasts forever.

  6. I've always really enjoyed the Steel Bridge in Portland, Oregon. Has four modes of traffic. Train and Pedestrian/bicycle on bottom level, and MAX light rail with automobile traffic on the top.

The bottom span can lift up independently from the top, to allow shorter boats through. Very innovative for a 100+ year old bridge.

  8. That is a splendid iron rail bridge among the casuarinas and red gums, spanning the Lachlan and its floodplain at Cowra!
The sleepers look pretty new from underneath... hmm I wonder...
Couldn't really get closer to the river span, cos, you know. Snakes. I ran for me life back to the car when that thought popped into me head. Gotta push on! Lithgow or bust!

  9. The Red Bridge in Campbell Town was completed in 1837, the work of convicts. It crosses the Elizabeth River in the North Midlands of Tasmania.
