The image opportunity itself was via an evening boat ride my wife Sheila and I took on our so-far only trip to San Francisco a couple years ago, and the image opportunity itself came up suddenly as we crossed under bridge. We were inside the large wide windowed touring compartment, saw the developmenting angle of vision and rushed out on the outdoors viewing deck and started clicking away fast as I could and soon the angle and perspective and lighting was gone.

I’d call it good timing, but really it was plain old good fortune I was able to worm past the other folks, push the door open, and find a small clear spot of point of view. Oh, and already have my camera phone on, lol! 😊

I’d call it good timing, but really it was plain old good fortune I was able to worm past the other folks, push the door open, and find a small clear spot of point of view. Oh, and already have my camera phone on, lol! 😊

Golden Gate Bridge - From The Edge

The Golden Gate Bridge is by estimation, the most photographed bridge in the world.
This image was captured on what was actually a cold day in February from the San Francisco side of the bridge.
The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937. The bridge has become iconic and one of the very recognizable symbols of the State of California.

The South Tower

The Golden Gate bridge is said to be the most photographed bridge in the word. I can't say I blame anyone for taking pictures of this spectacular structure bridging San Francisco and Marin County.
The bridge has been iconic since the first day it opened back in May of 1937. I've walked, cycled, and have been under her while heading out into the Pacific on a fishing trip.

-bike advocates who helped ensure a bike path stays available on the Golden Gate Bridge (super busy today)
-advocates who successfully got a section of Great Highway closed to cars & turned it into a wonderful linear park by the beach (this is what Lake WA Blvd in Seattle should become!)
-gorgeous weather which led me to keep biking another 10+ miles when I only planned on crossing the GG Bridge

Cuando comenzó la construcción del puente Golden Gate en 1933, nadie fingía optimismo.
No por el reto técnico, ni por la Gran Depresión que asfixiaba al país, sino por algo mucho más asumido: la muerte.
En la ingeniería de grandes infraestructuras existía una regla no escrita, brutal y aceptada sin demasiadas preguntas.
Por cada millón de dólares invertido, un trabajador moriría.
El Golden Gate costaría 35 millones. Treinta y cinco hombres estaban, según esa lógica, incluidos en el presupuesto.

Era el precio del progreso.

Joseph Strauss, ingeniero jefe del proyecto, conocía esa regla.
Y decidió no aceptarla.
No como gesto simbólico, sino como principio operativo.
Desde el inicio impuso medidas que muchos consideraron exageradas, casi ridículas.
Cascos de seguridad obligatorios, cuando la mayoría de los obreros jamás había usado uno.
Prohibición absoluta de alcohol en la obra.
Expulsión inmediata de quienes asumieran riesgos innecesarios o alardearan de valentía. Incluso ordenó repartir jugo de chucrut para combatir las resacas, convencido de que un obrero mareado era un peligro para todos.

Pero la decisión que marcaría la historia llegó en 1936.

Convencido por su ingeniero asistente, Clifford Paine, Strauss aprobó la instalación de una enorme red de seguridad bajo todo el tramo del puente.
No era un pequeño añadido: era una estructura colosal, extendida más allá de la calzada y de los bordes, diseñada para atrapar cuerpos humanos cayendo desde grandes alturas.
Costó 130.000 dólares, una cifra escandalosa en plena Depresión.
Las críticas no tardaron.
Se habló de despilfarro, de miedo innecesario, de hombres que “ya sabían a lo que iban”.

Strauss no cedió.

Antes de permitir que los trabajadores regresaran a las alturas, mandó probar la red lanzando sacos de arena para simular caídas humanas.
Solo entonces dio la orden de continuar.
El resultado fue inmediato y tangible: la red salvó a diecinueve hombres que, en cualquier otra obra de la época, habrían muerto sin nombre ni ceremonia.

Esos hombres formaron un grupo informal al que llamaron, con humor negro, el Halfway to Hell Club, el Club de la Mitad del Camino al Infierno.
Decían que habían estado a punto de llegar, pero no del todo.

Uno de ellos fue Alfred “Al” Zampa.
En una mañana espesa de niebla, en octubre de 1936, cayó desde unos veinte metros de altura.
Giró varias veces en el aire y terminó atrapado por la red.
Se rompió cuatro vértebras.
Los periódicos dudaron que sobreviviera.
Doce semanas después, Zampa regresó a la obra y caminó sobre una viga estrecha, no por temeridad, sino para demostrar que seguía vivo.

El 14 de diciembre de 1936, seis miembros del club posaron juntos para una fotografía histórica sobre la estructura de acero.
Zampa no pudo estar allí: aún se recuperaba de su espalda rota.

La red no solo evitó muertes.
Cambió la forma de trabajar.
Los obreros se movían con más confianza, menos tensión, mayor fluidez.
Se estima que la productividad aumentó alrededor de un 25%.
Al eliminar el miedo constante a una caída mortal, el trabajo no se volvió más lento, como temían los críticos, sino más eficiente.

El Golden Gate estuvo a punto de completar su construcción sin grandes tragedias.
Pero el 17 de febrero de 1937 ocurrió el desastre.
Un andamio de más de diez toneladas cayó sobre la red, la rompió y arrastró a doce hombres a la bahía.
Diez murieron.
Dos sobrevivieron.

En total, once trabajadores perdieron la vida construyendo el puente Golden Gate.

No treinta y cinco.

El puente se inauguró el 27 de mayo de 1937.
Ese primer día, casi doscientas mil personas lo cruzaron a pie.
Joseph Strauss había demostrado algo que hoy parece evidente, pero entonces era revolucionario: la seguridad no es un lujo, es una decisión ética.
El progreso no necesita víctimas inevitables.

Al Zampa siguió trabajando en los grandes puentes de la bahía durante décadas.
Vivió hasta los 95 años.
Uno de esos puentes, el que reemplazó al antiguo Carquinez, lleva hoy su nombre: Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge.

El Club de la Mitad del Camino al Infierno no tiene monumentos ni placas oficiales.
Pero su historia permanece como un recordatorio incómodo y poderoso: a veces, lo único necesario para cambiar la historia es negarse a aceptar que la muerte forme parte del cálculo.

Blue Angels and the Bridge
This is an image of the US Navy Blue Angels flying just south of the Golden Gate Bridge as they make their way into San Francisco. This event takes place yearly wrapping up with the Navy's Fleet Week.

Today I spent half a day walking on the Golden Gate Bridge. First, it took me almost an hour to get to the bridge itself, then I walked for about forty minutes in one direction and the same amount of time back. I also went up to the viewpoint to truly enjoy the amazing views. My legs ache, I'm incredibly tired, but it was definitely worth it! #GoldenGateBridge #OutdoorAdventure #AmazingViews

The Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is the most photographed bridge in the world. It's easy to understand why. The bridge itself is a beautiful piece of architectural art work and the setting is incredible.
The span reaches across the white capped waves of the San Francisco Bay below over to Marin County.
