  2. My attempts at preparing for #RetroFest2026 have not gone smoothly.

    • Hinge repairs didn't take on a rare #Psion Series 3a. Clearly I got the JB Weld mix wrong, or the tubes I've had for 8 years are going off. I've bought more JB Weld.
    • The same rare 3a probably needs a new flex, but it's a screen construction I've never seen before. It looks like Psion glued more bits together... It might have to stay broken for now.
    • EPOS unit (Apollo Lake processor with iGPU) running #openSUSE Kalpa won't start any graphical session. In a fit of impatience, I wiped the machine and started again. Clean build of Kalpa has the same issue. Now trying Tumbleweed to see if it's an openSUSE issue before trying other distros.
    • Once I've got something running on the EPOS unit, I need to install a custom build of MAME with as many ROMs as I can find, and get a slideshow running with LibreOffice Impress.
    • Ikôn (WinCE machine) battery completely dead. The Ikôn won't start without a battery.
    • netBook power socket might be dodgy. Might need to open it up again and check the soldering. Hopefully just needs some contact cleaner.

Plus I'm struggling to make decisions on simple things, like how to use a new flight case with pick-and-pluck foam to optimally arrange Psion gear for transport. And I haven't finished the slideshow yet.

This is meant to be fun, right?

  15. #Linux mastering by the main Patch- and Upgrade server/service instance #MultiLinuxMgmt=SUSEMLM formerly known as #SUMA . (everybody can use #uyuni, FOSS) With a contract imposed ticket I convinced SUSE-Support to let me use key stripped repository URLs for my douzens of #opensuse VM-Srever clients to upgrade from 15.6 to 16. Debian and Ubuntu also possible. Upgrading all kind of distros is usually prohibited by SUSE. I am proud to get their allowness to hack #SUSEMLM

Ach ja, was nutzt du genau?

  21. Every now and then, my 8 Gb RAM laptop that runs OpenSuse Kalpa runs out of memory, and when that happens it's a catastrophic event that it can only recover from if I catch it immediately, if I'm lucky and very patient. Otherwise it lags to a complete halt and the only remediation is a power cycle.

Is there any way to configure the system to handle those situations a little more gracefully?

  23. Geeeez... So I obsessed for the past couple of days, romanticizing the idea of testing #OpenSUSE as my main operating system on my SER6 PRO desktop... I did 17(!!!) attempts... I swear I never even ran into as many problems when I ran OpenBSD on my PC some 6 years ago.

And yeah I come from having installed pre-Systemd Arch and even more niche stuff in my teens... so this came as a shock.

Guess I'm sticking with Fedora Workstation a little longer.
  24. Hey, look! Someone reported a bug about this!

  27. Butterfried Gnocchi "all'amatriciana". That was the dinner I made for me and my better half this evening.

Had two interviews today, one to help Kill Parkinsson, which is a charity and the other one is a potential new employment that sounds quite exciting.... we'll see!

Other than that I'm researching and preparing to move my main computer over to #OpenSUSE if possible.
  28. #openSUSE Tumbleweed revisión de la semana 20 de 2026

  29. Trying again because I'm getting concerned about all these kernel exploits popping up and I want to update my system.

I need some help with my linux system. I'm trying to upgrade my openSuse Tumbleweed, but I run into this file conflict, and I don't know what to do about it. Yast only gives me the option to continue or abort, but if I abort, then nothing gets upgraded. But I'm worried that if I continue, it will break something important. Here's what it says:
    "File /usr/bin/dbus-launch
    from install of
    dbus-1-daemon-1.14.10-5.4.x86_64 (Main Repository (OSS))
    conflicts with file from package
    dbus-1-x11-1.14.10-4.3.x86_64 (@System)"

I tried "sudo zypper dup" but that gives me the same conflicts.

I tried switching from @System to the main repo, and then it started giving me all kinds of file conflicts. I tried working through some of them, but it kept giving me more, like it somehow made it worse, so I aborted that too.
