«openSUSE Tumbleweed aka Factory has already received a Linux Kernel update to 6.19.12 some days ago with the fix coming from regular stable backports.»

While tumbleweed is iconic in Westerns set in the Americas, the plant is originally from eastern Europe.
The tumbleweed (or ‘Russian Thistle’) didn’t arrive in North America from Europe until the 1870’s, most likely with shipments of seeds.

Wow. I'm *so* glad that I've been using Tumbleweed for a decade or more. But I may have to stop recommending openSUSE. Because I can't condone putting ANYONE through "AI-powered onboarding".
Just cut that shit out and give people a proper onboarding guide!
The OpenPrint "AI-powered portal" seems equally dumb on the face of it for causing hallucination-driven issues when people are most in need of accurate information.
And it's disappointing to see that the Summer of Code is being used to integrate slop generation into Drupal.
I'm just hoping that DigiKam is basically doing a nice, sensible embedding-based search.
It's great that people want to get involved. I just wish that they all wanted to (positively) contribute.

@Canageek Part of the issue is when people say #openSUSE, it's not particularly descriptive. They could be talking about #Leap, or #Tumbleweed, #MicroOS, or even some other variants, like #Aeon or #Kalpa, none of which have to really be in agreement with each other, for something to exist within the larger project, or ship them.
-
Ah, Tumbleweed, you always treat me so good.
-
Well... they all work? Steam, and thus #Defold and #Aseprite (from Steam), and even #unity It requires some tweaking to use Fedora RPM, but it installs and runs. I thought I wouldn't be able to work on my current client's project because of a plugin but switching to Vulkan did the trick! So this week I'll use #Tumbleweed on my daily work and see how it goes. I wish it were Debian, but I need some things to be up to date.

Auf openSUSE Tumbleweed ist jetzt Gnome 50 angekommen. Was ist das erste was man macht? Richtig, das Einfügen durch den 3. Mausbutton wieder aktivieren.
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-enable-primary-paste true

Tried to upgrade #openSUSE #Tumbleweed. Got some weird errors because #Packman has some syncing issues or something.
Read a post that said "You don't need Packman anyway these days! Just use distro libraries unless you're doing something unusual"
Switched packages back. Tried playing a video. "Nope - no h264 support".
Awesome. So "watching a video" is considered "unusual" by some people 🙄
(Yes, it's a patent-encumbered codec, but if even DECODING the average video that you get DRM-free from GOG is "unusual" then you're only doing very boring stuff on your machine!)

🚀✨ Wow, another Linux distro! Because what the world urgently needed was an "atomic and transactional" version of #Tumbleweed wearing a #Plasma hat. 🧢🔄 Who knew #innovation could be so... repetitive? 🙄

#XLibre runs on #openSUSE #Tumbleweed. As always, all it takes is one person to try it and succeed. If everything goes well, we'll create packages together. A big thank you to James M. https://x.com/outtathebox5319 https://x.com/outtathebox5319/status/2011926745562190037 !

One of the big things I like about the #UniversalBlue world is the openness -- especially the sharing of information.
Once I realized that #Bluefin and Bluefin LTS both updated on a weekly cadence, that made me want to switch from LTS to regular.
https://docs.projectbluefin.io/changelogs/
I wasn't so worried about changing kernels and packages as I was by the frequency of updates.
Specifically I wanted to get away from daily updates (#Tumbleweed-based #Aeon is VERY dynamic).
Weekly is more what I want.

I just moved to @opensuse #Tumbleweed on my desktop computers, and in the process I switched to @atuin for shell history. And, honestly... I don't know how I lived before. I had @ohmyzsh set up and thought that the normal history was good, but Atuin is just a whole new level. Sooo much easier to use, and I haven't even set up sync yet.

Teil 3: Der Endgegner Gaming 🎮
Dank der offenen Mesa-Treiber läuft die Karte "out of the box". Kein Treiber-Voodoo mehr. Lutris an, spielen.
Sogar Blizzard-Titel laufen jetzt butterweich.

@jjba23 @rafa my hope is that #Agama + #Tumbleweed will provide the most similar experience/features while also being "mainstream" and "super easy" on the user. #MicroOS or #Silverblue might be even better choices...
-
Atomic systems like #FedoraAtomicDesktops, #HeliumOS, #uBlue or #NixOS with "does-it-work"-checks are great here.
Snapshots like in #OpenSUSE #Tumbleweed are a big benefit but not as useful

Dear KDE Plasma Linux users,
say I have a laptop with a LUKS-encrypted file system.
Say this is a single user system. The user unlocks the device (before or after the bootloader, should not matter in this discussion) with a safe password.
The user is logged in automatically in KDE Plasma.
KWallet is set to have an empty password, to not ask the user for a password just to enable WiFi or similar (which is the only thing KWallet is being used for).
The user still needs to enter the password after locking the screen, suspending the machine or similar.
Passwords are still in a locked password safe (think KeePassXC or similar), so this requires unlocking with a safe password.
Does anyone see major security flaws in this setup?
Due to #EndOf10 I have converted some users to Linux, and having to enter your password multiple times is the only thing they find annoying...

Finally got around to packaging #ejson (mostly out of #Shopify), a go tool for managing secrets as code in simple JSON files, for #openSUSE #Tumbleweed: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:LarsMB/ejson
I stumbled across this when adopting #chezmoi, and I think that should go nicely together.
Maybe that's useful to someone else!

I like #AeonDesktop. It's an immutable system from #OpenSuse that starts you with a very clean and minimal #Gnome desktop.
The system is responsive, with automatic updates that happen invisibly in the background. In the event of a bad update, it automatically rolls back to the last working state, which is good.
Software is provided primarily through #Flatpak, but it comes with a preconfigured #Distrobox/#Podman setup for OpenSuse #Tumbleweed if you need not-flatpak stuff, and you can add other OSes, so if you really need it, you can pull something from the AUR or whatever (although I question why you're using an immutable OpenSuse system if you need something from the AUR).
It comes without bells and whistles, assuming you can pick out your own. There's not even default wallpaper.
So if you're a beginner, a lazy developer who wants a system that just takes care of itself, or otherwise want a stable, secure #Linux system that just kinda works, Aeon Desktop does the job.

Empfehlungen? -
I am using #Tumbleweed with KDE since years without big problems on several machines (Notebooks, NUC Mini PC). Great distri with latest software and kernel.
Missing stuff can be installed via #Packman repos or #Flatpak (and e.g. KDE UI called Discover). Zypper has recently been improved in terms of speed (parallel downloads etc.).

Trying out #openSUSE #Tumbleweed on my spare laptop (Lenovo #x260).
Notes so far:
- Network selection isn’t as intuitive as I’d like for a newcomer.
- Setting a hostname doesn’t feel like a natural part of the installation flow.
- I’d love a question about disk encryption during installation.Other than that, the installation program has overall sane defaults and shouldn’t be scary to anyone capable of creating and booting from a USB stick, and reading text off a screen.

I just ran updates on my #opensuse #tumbleweed machine and was pleasantly surprised to see that #zypper supports concurrent downloads now. It doesn’t change a whole lot for me due to my bad country internet, but it’s still a welcome change nonetheless.
