fastfetch of LMDE (Debian) on an MSI motherboard with Ryzen 5700G processor
Memory shows as 27.3 GB, even though there are four 8GB memory modules for a total of 32GB. The reason is that the Radeon graphics on the 5700G CPU reserves some of the system RAM for use by the graphics.

So yesterday I built a new secondary computer to act as my gaming desktop as the Minisforum mini pc that I have been using hasn’t been up to the task… and I’ve hit a couple of snags: the first is that I tried reusing the laptop RAM to avoid paying the outrageous prices they’ve currently at - which hasn’t paid off (it posts but seems to be hella unstable). Which is fine, I got desktop RAM on the way, it has nuked any semblance of going DIY would be cheaper, but whatever.
The more pressing issue is that I tried to reuse the Bazzite SSD from my mini PC but that has corrupted! This has left me with a conundrum as the OS has to be reinstalled anyway: as this is technically a DIY Steam Machine it’d make sense to use Gaming Mode, but it’s actually a mini-tower on a desk setup (as seen in attached photo) and rarely is used with my TV, so Desktop Mode makes sense there! The follow-up toot has a poll so you can break this impasse. 😅

Something is very off, and I don't even know where to look. I've built a custom PC as a #homelab server, booted it, and everything worked from the start. This scares me. #SelfHosting #CustomBuild

So, after few attempts my first ever water cooling loop is up and running without leaks!
It took just three attemps to fit all the tubes and one attempt to unscrew the flow sensor that I tighten with a bit of “Liquid Teflon”, which is so good, that it basically glues threads together and they are impossibly to unscrew. It took A LOT of brute force to detach it from tank cap, with a bit of cosmetic damage. So much for “easy disassembly” that label advertises.
Surprisingly loop does it job very well and even under quite a high load GPU’s stay in 25-30°C range. Next week I’ll try to crunch some numbers and we’ll see how it well it can keep temp down under long sustained load.
2 things left: write esp32 firmware to spit flow and water temp readings to usb serial and find a way to control fans pwm, to adjust only pump and radiator fans speed.
First one is trivial, but pwm stuff is not. I have backup option of managing fan profile using Redfish HTTP API abusing Fan Profiles. But I rather find a way to read and write actual pwm duty values, if it’s even possible.

Well, everything seems fine. Wait. Oh shit…

Another step is working around my fiasco with metrics vs imperial threads. I was planning to mount two DS18B20 temperature probes to measure water temperature before and after GPU’s, but thread on supposedly M10 a sensor thermowell is a bit bigger that on M10 → 1/4” adapter, because fuck you that’s why.
But I have two another sensors in steel tubes, so I just mounted it using epoxy in barb connector. Epoxy is always messy and this particular one is awful: you have 5 min before it becomes firm and because I’m lucky the foil under the cap on resin tube was so thick I couldn’t break it with with a needle on a cup. So I missed deadline and managed to glue only one sensor. I’ll do another one tomorrow and I hope that’s the last thing that keeps me from assembling this loop.

Another round of brute force and here we are. This cheapo screwdriver truly paid off. 40 grit cylindrical bore cost just 1e and it took like 5 minutes to file off this pin from both backplates. Yay!
-
Uh. WHY?! Guess now I’m up for file shopping to file this leg off.
-
I am at that point in everyone life, where you are sanding copper base for water block so it fits in GPU. That’s easier that trying to widen the hole in stock radiator base
Hopefully, I would finally have working water cooling by the end of the weekend, so I can crunch numbers in relative silence.
Anyways, should I buy additional 3× Arctic P14 Maxes? I have 6× P14 Max and 2× P12 Max right now in my LIAN LI Dynamic EVO XL.
Right now I have only single AlphaCool NexXxoS ST30 radiator mounted at the top in push config. When I’ll get another two Tesla P40, I’ll get a second one at the bottom.
This setup is kinda making negative pressure, so I’m thinking about directing bottom to blow inside the case and mount 3 additional Maxes on motherboard side also blowing inside.
So it’s going to be 6× P14 blowing in and 3× P14 + 2× P12 blowing out giving 25 mmH₂O in vs 21 out. This way it’s going to be slightly positive inside, right? I can also direct rear P12’s inside, which is 33 mmH₂O in vs 12 out.
Getting 1300W of heat out is not an easy task, but I hope I wouldn’t be needing to run fans at the full speed. (That’s my estimate for TDP of EPYC 7551P, 8× RDIMM, nvme, couple hdds, two PSU’s and four NVIDIA Tesla P40)
I guess it’s better to have more fans than not enough fans, yeah?

Throwback project from 2005 !!
I brought my old NES back to life by turning it into a giant handheld console, just like a Gameboy. It took a lot of work to fit everything into a small case that I built myself out of Lexan. I used a cheap controller with turbo buttons and a screen from a PlayStation 1. I even managed to squeeze in a rechargeable battery that lasts for over 3 hours!
The hardest part was making sure everything fit together and worked properly without changing the way the NES played games. I wanted to keep the original sound and feel, and I didn't want to use one of those imitation chips. In the end, it turned out a little heavy, but it's comfortable to hold and definitely worth the effort!

After some specific advice.
Seen quite a few #PC builds that use an AWESOME case. Its kind of asymmetric, with an angle on the front corner which sometimes has a screen in it.
That is the vaguest description I can possibly give but I am looking for that case! Help!

Has anyone built a dual RTX 4090 desktop (desktop motherboard not server)? How much of a performance gain over single 4090 in what you do? Gaming/Machine Learning/Video editing etc.
Bonus question: got any numbers on performance difference for PCIE 8 lane/8 lane vs PCIE 16 lane/ 16 lane on a server config?

In contrast to the retro Dell Optiplex 760 with Windows XP Pro that I delivered today, I also delivered a powerful Ryzen build to another customer.
All in a days work.
I really liked how it turned out and I learned a few things.
I hadn’t been paying attention to current graphics card or the companies that make them. Discovered the Sapphire brand and really like it.
Also had a good experience with a DeepCool brand case and CPU cooler.
Here’s a summary of the build:
- Ryzen 7 5800X cpu
- MSI B550M motherboard
- Sapphire Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB graphics
- 64GB PC4 3600 Corsair memory
- 2TB WD Black nvme SSD
- Corsair “Shift” power supply, with connectors on side
- DeepCool CH370 Micro ATX case
- DeepCool AK400 ZERO DARK cpu cooler
- Windows 11 Pro (client wants Windows)
So an AMD build through and through, with Corsair and DeepCool playing a support role.
