## LibreSSL 4.3.1 released!

* Internal improvements
- Remove the unused sequence number from X509_REVOKED.
- Replace a call to atoi() with strtonum() in nc(1) and replace a
misleading use of ntohs() with htons().
- openssl(1) speed now uses HMAC-SHA256 for its hmac benchmark.
- Reimplemented only use of ASN1_PRINTABLE_type() in openssl(1) ca.
The API will be removed in an upcoming release.
- Add curve NID to EC_POINT objects so the library has a clue on which
curve a given EC_POINT is supposed to live.
- Use curve NID to check for compatibility between group and points
in various EC API. This isn't 100% failsafe but good enough for sane
uses.
- Require SSE in order to use gcm_{gmult,ghash}_4bit_mmx().
On rare i386 machines suporting MMX but not SSE this could result
in an illegal instruction.
- Cleaned up asn1t.h to make it somewhat readable and more robust by
using C99 initializers in particular.
- Further assembly macro improvements for -portable.
- Add fast path for well-known DH primes in DH_check() (including
those from RFC 7919). Some projects still fiddle with this in 2025.
- Rewrite ec_point_cmp() for readability and robustness.
- Improve EVP_{Open,Seal}Init() internals. This is legacy API that
cannot be removed since one scripting language still exposes it.
- ASN1_BIT_STRING_set_bit() now trims trailing zero bits itself rather
than relying on i2c_ASN1_BIT_STRING() to do that when encoding.
- Fix and add workarounds to libtls to improve const correctness and
to avoid warnings when compiling with OpenSSL 4.
- Prefix EC_KEY methods with ec_key_ to avoid problems in some static
links.

Yesterday the German Pre-#CHI 2026 started at LMU Munich. The idea of the event is to provide an opportunity for #researchers from Germany and neighboring countries to present their accepted CHI 2026 papers and discuss them in a smaller circle. The #email address is one of the most important services you have: It is not only used for communication, but as part of the login credential for nearly all other services it also serves as your digital identity and backup for most of your accounts (e.g. when you need to reset your password, etc.). That makes it your most important hub for all digital services, and becomes a detailed profile of your digital life in itself.

It therefore needs to be #secure - but also respect your #privacy. And it should be #reliable and support your #souvereignity.

The most used email provider #Gmail by #Google might be secure, but most definately neither respects your privacy, nor your #souvereignity as it is one of the #US #BigTech companies that would delete your account if their fascist leader wills it (plus Google's #SundarPichai and #SergeyBrin are openly supporting him).

Time to switch to an #EuropeanAlternative - after some reserach and evaluating the three biggest contenders, I chose to go with @mailbox_org. It'll cost you at least 1€/month, but this money ensures that they won't try to cover their costs by selling your data.

As a bonus, #mailbox_org also provides other services you know from Google, like Calendar, Contacts, Drive, Documents (Text, Tables and Presentations), Chat and Webcam Meetings, Polls and Shared Notes. There's a private and a corporate option, as well as a family option (that I have yet to explore - not quite sure how it works and what benefit it brings). But most importantly, it's #German company following #EU laws, has multiple certifications and simplifies the usage of #GPG for non-techi users, while giving techis the freedom they desire.

Switching one's email is a tedious endeavour - but I believe that this is the most important service to migrating. If there is only one service you want to migrate, let it be the one that gives you access to all other services - or practically cuts you off, if someone else gains access to it!

I’m working towards something for #secure / #private / #simple #P2P #filetransfer. It isnt as “simple” as it could be, im still working on it, but ive got it down to:

Zero-installation as a #PWA

Zero-registration by using local-only storage

#P2P-authentication using #WebCryptoAPI

Fast #datatransfer using #WebRTC, #syncthing, #croc, #sphynctershare and countless others. the key difference in my approach is that its a #webapp thats ready to go without any "real" setup process. you just need a browser.

I’m aware there are things like #SFTP and several other established protocols and tools. I started doing this because I was learning about #WebRTC and it seems suprisingly capable. This isnt ready to replace any existing apps or services.

(Note: I know you guys are typically interested in #opensource code. this project is a spin-off from a bigger project: https://github.com/positive-intentions/chat)

Let me know what you think about the app, features and experience you would expect from a tool like this.

Lobbyists for a coalition of six groups succeeded in getting changes into a 2021 Portman-Cardin bill governing IRS #oversight of #private #retirement #plans.

Fact sheets provided to POLITICO
— which a Hill staffer said the lobbyists distributed to advocate for their proposal
— sold the changes as fixes that would help elderly Americans, such as retired government and factory workers,
who had inadvertently put too much in their retirement accounts and could face penalties from the IRS.

But the lobbyists were also targeting benefits for a different demographic.

The head of the coalition, according to his biography, specializes in tax planning for🌟 “ultra-high-net-worth clients.” 🌟

The coalition also included an advocacy group that has previously been tied to the #Koch #network
— and which engaged in a massive lobbying campaign against efforts to restructure Puerto Rico’s debt that was owned by hedge fund managers in 2015.

Tax lawyers who reviewed the statutory changes said they would in fact
👉 make it far more difficult for the IRS to penalize supersized retirement accounts where owners avoided millions of dollars in taxes. 👈

“The lobby power of these groups is tremendous,” said Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), a member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.
