I get asked why I "waste so much time" distro/OS hopping. I honestly think it is more strange to backup/restore your whole OS.

Files? Sure. But not applications and configurations. That stuff gets old and crusty over the years and a good start over gives you a chance to try a different approach.

So I am putting together a distro hopping blog post because I seen a blog post that said not to do it.

🏠 Mutarea folderului /home pe o unitate de stocare separată: Secretul ideal pentru „Distro-Hoppers”!

Pentru pasionații de Linux care testează frecvent distribuții noi (distro-hopping), separarea sistemului de operare (partiția /) de datele personale și configurările de utilizator (partiția /home stocată pe un SSD/HDD dedicat) este o tactică esențială. Această abordare transformă reinstalarea sistemului dintr-un proces complicat într-o sarcină simplă și rapidă.

✨ Avantajele majore ale unui folder /home pe un disc separat:

🔄 Reinstalare curată fără pierdere de date:
• Poți formata și instala orice distribuție nouă pe partiția rădăcină (/), în timp ce fotografiile, documentele, fișierele de configurare (.config) și setările aplicațiilor rămân complet intacte pe discul /home.

⚙️ Păstrarea configurărilor aplicațiilor:
• Profilurile din browsere (cum ar fi fișierele Firefox sau Chrome), setările din VS Code, extensiile, salvarea jocurilor și preferințele din mediul grafic (GNOME, KDE Plasma etc.) se reîncarcă automat pe noua distribuție imediat ce te autentifici cu același nume de utilizator.

🚀 Separarea fizică a stocării (Performanță și Spațiu):
• Permite instalarea sistemului de operare pe un SSD NVMe foarte rapid pentru timpi de boot minimi, menținând în același timp datele voluminoase pe o unitate de stocare de capacitate mai mare.

🛠️ Cum se configurează (Ghid pas cu pas simplificat):

Pregătește noua partiție/disc: Formatat de preferință cu sistemul de fișiere ext4 sau Btrfs.

Copiază datele existente: Folosește un utilitar precum rsync pentru a păstra permisiunile originale ale fișierelor:

sudo rsync -avxHAX /home/ /mnt/noul_disc/
Află UUID-ul noii partiții:

Bash
lsblk -f
Configurează montarea automată în /etc/fstab: Adaugă o linie nouă pentru a instrui Linux-ul să monteze partiția la pornire:
UUID=XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX /home ext4 defaults 0 2

Testează înainte de repornire: Deconectează/muta folderul vechi /home și montează noua partiție (sudo mount -a) pentru a te asigura că totul funcționează corect.

O schimbare simplă de arhitectură care îți oferă libertate deplină de a experimenta orice distribuție Linux fără teama de a-ți pierde munca sau configurările! 🚀

Turns out the Internet seemed to think it had something to do with asusctl not being installed. Since I could not find a way to do it on AuroraOS (immutable), I distro hopped until settled on CachyOS. I wasn't really gonna do any heavy lifting with the laptop. Use it for travel or maybe write something on it. I was hoping I wouldn't have to use Cachy, but turns out I might have fixed the battery/power management issue by installing asusctl with it.
