  1. I'm trying to cut back on time how much time I spent sending product/service feedback, but I just can't help it when a message from a company like Canadian Tire, who is big enough to know better, sends an email where the entire message is just "Hey Charles," and a bunch of images with no alt text.

(Also my computer is busy installing updates right now so I can'tbe productive anyway lol)

  2. I pre-ordered the Clicks Power Keyboard* a few days ago, and got an email today whose content was entirely in images with no alt text. I sent a polite note about the importance of, benefits of, and legal requirements for, including alt text.

Their reply, <1 hour later, is a masterclass in how to handle such requests.

  12. I have a question for #accesibility regarding the use of ALT text.

I often struggle making alt text in english, it is fine if i do it in my native language?

  13. Related question: what's the status quo for captchas? At the moment we're using #LibreCaptcha but:

    1. Not sure what's the status of AI vs. captcha. Are they still useful to stop bot accounts?
    2. I feel a visual captcha will be an impediment for some users. What could be a good approach here?

Feedback and boosts are greatly appreciated!

  14. Been trying to cut my phone usage even more lately. One thing that definately really helps, is setting everything to greyscale.

Phone's boring as hell now, and I only really use it now to look something up if I desperately need to.

It has also opened my eyes even more to the #accesibility of colour choice in web design. When everything you look at is in black and white, you can immediatly tell when a site designer never even thought about making the colours accessible to people with visual disabilities. Colour contrast really matters!

  15. @JordiGH @lambda The Wikipedia article about screen readers (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_r) does not mention OCR, and I have not seen it anywhere else. So let us better ask the experts:

Those of you who use a screen reader, does it support OCR (and do you use it)?

  23. Stumbed across this older article on Microsoft's Xbox Adaptive Controller and decided to share it

    Source: @THR - March 8, 2019

“There is a large variety of hardware partners who create accessories that are compatible with the Xbox Adaptive Controller, and we have also waived the Xbox licensing fee for peripheral devices that meet accessibility and quality guidelines,” says Johnson.

  24. I've so many nice #pictures (even if I say so myself) from my India travels since last August. I like to share them here but I feel defeated by the thought of writing alt text, and I can't bring myself to sharing without alt text. No compromise on that.

    Anyway, that's where I'm. 😢

  25. Soft spot for interactive elements

I have to admit, I have a soft spot for interactive elements. However, I understand that not everyone experiences the web in the same way. Many people either dislike or get distracted and disoriented by animations that cannot be paused. It's important to me to respect that. That’s where the prefers-reduced-motion media query comes into play. It’s a simple yet powerful way to tailor the experience for those who prefer less motion. How its done I created two classes to either show or […]

  30. As it turns out, doesn't have any options available during first setup. No Magnifier, no Screen Keyboard, nothing. You also cannot connect any accessory during the initial setup.
So now my parents are stuck with Mini serving as a paperweight until they get a USB-C hub, cuz they didn't realize you cannot connect your Bluetooth keyboard to Mac during initial setup.
    What year is it? 1999?

  31. #inclusion #accesibility: List of emoticons: Unicode characters – Wikipedia #a11y

A lot of forum software (not just on retro computing or history) embed image smileys in their messages translated from text-smileys. It seems they missed that a lot of them have made their way into Unicode, making it not just easier to display but also a lot easier for visually impaired. So, please software developers, use the Unicode characters whenever possible.

  34. Parę przemyśleń jako osoba z aparatami słuchowymi żyjąca w Polsce:

    1. Polecam kupować baterie do aparatów z hurtowni. Grafika poniżej. Ceny zaobserwowane w moim otoczeniu.

    3. Aparaty to technologia wspierająca, więc warto podejść cyberpunkowo.

Odbiera mi to kontrolę nad własnym słuchem i zmusza do wielokrotnych wizyt, aż protetyk ustawi wszystko poprawnie.

Muszę to bardziej przetestować.

    8. Kolejny vent coming...

  35. All of that is to say that potentially losing out on using a laptop is not a relaxing thought to have. So it is nice to see that people spend time thinking about alternatives and sharing their knowledge. At the end of Nicole's post a voice controller called Talon Voice is mentioned, which to me seems like an amazing tool to have. It's been on my "that looks cool! I should try it out" list for a while, but I've seen how useful it can be.

I'm planning on trying it out soon after being reminded by Nicole's blogpost and combining it with another great tool called Cursorless. While Talon is aimed at controlling your computer in general, Cursorless is aimed at programming without using a keyboard. These kinds of tools are very nice to have in your back pocket just in case you ever need them.

  37. Everybody hate the monilia
    Monilia this and monilia that
    Nobody hate the computer
Computer is a wicked talking parrot

    (...)

Any time I meet a computer
    Take it from me confidentially
I'm going to grab the executor
And go jumping into the sea
    Because computer tell them this
    Computer tell them that
And the officials they all agree
Computer tell them the devil knows what
And they take the pension from me, yeh! yeh!
